Re: Cuttin' it Close [Yuki/closed]
Is it even worth it to be honest to someone who lies to you?
How much was she to divulge to this man? Could she really even trust him? After all she couldn't even trust him to tell the truth! But then he had also protected her. He had saved her. She already felt that he was repaid for that, after all she had in turn saved him. Probably.
He did not have anything on him from the man named Vance, but he did have something at his home. Perhaps she could follow him. Pick up this other Human's scent. In the future she could search for him. Unfortunately it seemed this man was also from out of town. At least, if Raph was telling the truth.
It was worrying to hear that he had spoken directly with other Shinigami. He didn't know their names, but she didn't know that so many knew about this man's ability to communicate with their kind. Were these unique Humans being covered up by someone? It would certainly be something to explore.
When Raphael offered her the notebook for inspection she accepted it, slowly paging through the notes. It was quite surprising, and not just because he'd suddenly acted so open with her. There were so many notes. Charts. Graphs. Sketches. Maps. Detailed information not just on Hollows but also on other Shinigami. Or, at least, their routes.
Damn. This Human is obsessed. In a good way. Well. Hmm. Trust is earned, right?
"To be completely honest protecting people might be my duty, but it is not entirely my reason for doing what I do. Personally, I enjoy the hunt. The thrill of battle. And I have my own vendetta against those creatures. I am sure others do this work for other reasons beyond duty. There may be Shinigami who are, as you say, dead inside. They work simply because they must. We aren't completely different from Humans."
She lifted her phone. Right. Permission first. "May I make copies of what you have here?"

She took the notebook and seemed to leaf through it fairly slowly surprising him. He was pretty sure that anything that wasn’t fighting would’ve bored her to tears. Realistically, if he were stronger, he would’ve relished the opportunity to fight the monsters, but he was nowhere near strong enough. Still, he thought back to the energy that he’d felt, the strength and elation that had brought him… It was fascinating and wonderful. He wanted to figure out how he’d done it, but he couldn’t recall the energy, now that he was no longer in danger.
She seemed to think for a little while, and Raphael couldn’t help but wonder if it wasn’t often that she spoke with humans, or rather if Shinigami spoke with many humans at all. He seemed extremely calm given the fact that she was holding his little journal. He nodded as she explained that she mostly fought for the thrill of the fight with the hollows. Raphael nodded, he could certainly understand that. She also explained that many Shinigami no doubt fought for the same reason, existing. Why join something like the Shinigami otherwise, then? It made no sense.
“Perhaps not,” Raphael replied. “It just seems like an odd thing to join an organization like the Shinigami for the simple reason of survival.” He shrugged. “But people have done worse things. Crime is on the top of my list.”
“Of course,” Raphael replied when she asked if she could make copies. “So long as you give me the journal back, I’m fine with it. Gotta put it with the others, if ya know what I mean.”

"Others? How long have you been doing this?" she pondered out loud, carefully flipping back to the first page. Her phone was lifted, a picture snapped of one page after some careful focus. One by one she'd proceed to copy the notes into her denreishinki. It was just easier this way.
"Unfortunately some people join our ranks for dishonorable reasons. Title. Wealth. To hold power over others. Not every shinigami is noble. That is especially so for most within the nobility."
When she had finished copying the pages she held the notebook out for Raphael to accept, tucking the little phone back into her robes. She was quite enjoying this conversation. Rarely did she get a chance to speak with these Humans, and in this instance there was no point in avoiding it. If anything it gave her some valuable insight into the Hollows and it exposed a few weaknesses within their own patrol schemes.
"Thank you."

Re: Cuttin' it Close [Yuki/closed]
He thought for a few minutes. “Since I was probably sixteen. I’ve mapped what few there were in Chicago, London and downtown Tokyo as well as created a few programs to map the different waveforms that I’ve measured over the time.” He shrugged. “So, pretty long, to be honest. Only problem is that there’s no human technology that can properly measure, analyze and quantify the waveforms of energy that Shinigami, hollows and humans give off. Thus I’m operating off of…well, eyeballed data.” He gave a small frown. “But what can ya do, am I right? Other people can’t see you all so someone’s gotta do the data collecting. Though, given your institution’s dated methods and hierarchy, I’m surprised you all use cellphones.”
Reaching up, he took the notebook from her, nodding at her words. It made sense. Not everyone that joined every organization or did anything was necessarily a good person and sometimes beggars couldn’t be choosers, literally. He slowly returned the book to his back pocket. “I’ve got an insatiable appetite for knowledge.” He grinned. “Don’t mention it. I’m just glad that my habits and hobbies are being of assistance. Did you have any other questions for me, before I head home?”

Unfortunately Yuki didn't understand half of what Raphael was trying to explain to her. Technology was not her thing. She used it, certainly, and she'd managed to learn how to use the devices she'd been given for her work, but beyond that she preferred older tech. Still, someone else within the ranks of the Shinigami would probably find all this information to be highly valuable.
I'll need to point the research division in his direction.
"There are some who push for this sort of reform. Sometimes things change."
The wolf turned, sniffing at the air repeatedly. Ears twitched, shifted positions a few times. All appeared to be clear. It would probably be safe if she departed.
"I don't, no" she responded, turning to face the man once more. Arms pressed to her sides as she gave him a slight bow. "Thank you for answering my questions and for providing us some undoubtedly important data. If you have any friends with abilities then you should stick with them for your own safety. Good luck."
And with that she turned, intending upon taking her leave! All in all it had been a very productive day! She had herself a little hunt, nearly died, met a very unique Human, gathered some important data, and was actually friendly with someone! Well, perhaps friendly was pushing it.

Re: Cuttin' it Close [Yuki/closed]
Raphael watched her for a few minutes as she spoke about change and reform. Much as he wanted to believe that they could, he’d lived for far too long and had learned that people rarely changed, groups especially. Yet it was a sad truth of life. One that, for the sake of the Shinigami, that she was correct. Stagnation, that was what he saw when he saw the Shinigami and, of all things, stagnation led only to a loss and lack of progress. While he wasn’t necessarily indebted to the shinigami in their entirety, he would hate to see such promise wasted.
When she said that she had no more questions, Raphael nodded and gave a bit of a half nod. “It was not a problem Yuki, and believe me, if I find any humans that also possess abilities, like or unlike my own, then I’ll do what I can to stick with them. Though, much like with the Shinigami, that can prove difficult.” He smiled as she turned to leave. “Au revoir, my dear. I hope that fortune smiles upon you as well. I can tell that we’ve all a difficult road, no matter which one we choose to walk.” With that he started heading off. “Ya know…I think I’ll head to that ramen shop on third street. So hungry I could eat a damn horse…”
A rather fascinating day, all things considered; he'd met a shinigami, hid from a bunch of hollows as she'd fought it. Then suddenly something had happened that he wasn't entirely sure what it was. That was the weirdest part and was the part that he was still trying to piece together: what exactly had happened? He remembered his headache being really bad and the next thing he'd known the lion thing was on the ground, as close to dead as it could be and then it was gone. Her questions had been the next thing she'd been waking up to and he couldn't stand that. But it had all ended well enough.
