One deep breath.

Reika took a deep breath as she closed her eyes. Focusing on her breathing - in and out.

She had spoken with Boreas, the spirit of her Zanpakuto. In the silence of that broken building, he came to her in her time of need when she was at her lowest, when the darkness of the world seemed to claw at her very existence, her heart scattered to the wind.

Those simple words, they were what she needed the most in that dark hour. His belief, his encouragement, him actually being there. It made the difference against the darkness in her heart that seemed to hang heavy on the young shinigami. Still that self-doubt, that emptiness weighed heavy.

If what Yuki said was true, it would change her world; rock it to the very core. The man whom she called brother. The man who gave her power and nobility. The man who gave her family by blood. If he was using her, lying to her, it would shatter her just like when she was told the ‘truth’ about her friends.

Reika’s heart wavered. If she were to summon Yuki once more…

“It’s okay.” Boreas spoke to Reika’s mind, those soft words washing over her with soft comfort.

The young woman trembled, trying to steel herself.

“Yuki…” Reika clenched her fingers around Boreas’ hilt as she bobbed up in down as if she were trying to sike herself up for a jump into an abyss before her.

Goosebumps rose up on the shinigami’s skin as she jumped from the rooftop of a building at the town’s edge and into the trees, darting from treetop to treetop until she got to a clearing in an open field, far enough away from the town. Silently she touched down to the ground and softly walked to the center of the open field.

Here was perfect. Far enough away from the humans and their buildings to not cause chaos and destruction. Where they good meet as warriors, as friends. Reika hoped to bare their hearts to one another in a way that only warriors could. Truth through actions, not words. It was what was needed - what was wanted.

Reika wasn’t ready, yet was. There was only one thing left to do. As before, Reika released her spiritual pressure. It had been some time between their last meeting, and although she was much stronger than she was before, there was no way in the nine hells that Yuki could recognize her calling. “YUKI!” The redhead yelled as her black and grey reiatsu washed through the air, washing over the area like a cold storm.

You shouldn't be doing this.

Why not?

It's dangerous to let your guard down like this.

Yuki sat crouched within the kitchen of the little home that she shared with Meili. Dishes were scattered about. It was positively trashed from the latest battle. The wolf's crimson gaze remained firmly fixated upon her newest foe: the oven. Rather, the batch of cookies now baking within it.

I think it's nice!

Meili spends her days working. This is the least that I could do.

Baking butter cookies is hardly worth the effort. You should be training. Training and paying attention to your surroundings.

A brow was arched. She had been training! Granted, much of it had been cardio, or shadow sparring, or calisthenics. But she had also been spending a lot of time within her mind, or rather, within her soul. Time facing off against Katsumi. Even Kokoro on a few occasions.

You should be taking to the streets.

Perhaps Katsumi was right. Meili was, at this point, probably stronger than she was. Well, when she tapped into her Bankai anyhow. Even so, the fact that she had unlocked it in the first place put the Baozhai above where she was at.

Are you jealous that she managed it first?

A muffled giggle from Kokoro. She could feel Katsumi's bubbling anger. Oh yes. She had definitely touched upon a nerve. It brought a slight smirk to her lips.

I'll train harder. Besides, these are almost finished.

Both ears perked up. Yuki rose to her feet, switched off the oven, and untied the frilly pink apron that she wore. She felt a familiar presence wash over her, drawing her attention to the north. It was much stronger, but it was also unmistakable.

Reika.

Racing up the stairs, Yuki hurriedly dressed in her shihakusho. When she returned down the stairs she paused, removing the cookies from the oven. They were done. Probably. Her gaze briefly snapped to the messy kitchen.

I'll have to clean it when I return.

She'll understand.

With a nod she darted out!

It had been a week since they had last met. Instead of meeting within the city, the two would meet out within the wilderness. Further from her home too. This meant she'd have more issues if she required assistance from Meili, but it at least meant less risk for the mortals, and less risk of drawing in other parties. But then it also made for a better ambush location.

I don't smell anyone else.

She is stronger. Don't take it easy on her if things turn south.

Things ended well last time, did they not?

She would have brought others if she wanted to take me in.

Since their last meeting Yuki had been doing a lot of reflecting. Most of this had been focused upon Reika. How could she save her friend? It was possible. She was certain of that now. Yuki wanted to save her. And if it was possible to save Reika then it might be possible to still save Watari. Perhaps, given time, even forgive them. Risky? Yes. But then when had she ever shied away from risk?

From the trees Yuki stepped forth, calmly making her way out into the clearing. Arms remained crossed together in front of herself, stuffed into her sleeves as a chilled blast of air washed over her, tail and hair whipping out to her side. She did enjoy the winter weather. The cold hardly bothered her.

"Hello Reika."

The little wolf came to a stop a few meters away. While she did not wear a smile her expression was, at the very least, calm. Relieved, even. She had heard about Reika's circumstances following their last meeting. A slight bow of her head was cast towards the woman.

"Apologies for the delay. You caught me baking. How are you doing?"

You are being too casual.

Reika’s spiritual power diminished as the wolf pup walked into the clearing. It was to her some great relief that releasing all that power had even worked. Let alone so far out from the city. But she knew it was one of the only ways to get anyone’s attention without direct lines of communication. With any luck, Meili and any other creature wouldn’t come and disturb them.

“Hello, Yuki.” Reika flashed a genuine smile, returning the bow to her friend. “No need to apologize. Honestly, I’m surprised that even worked again, yet here you are.”

Holding her arms before her, she splayed her fingers wide, palms flat toward the wary individual before her, trying to show that she meant no harm as she crossed the distance between them until she was only two yards away. It was daunting, nonetheless, Reika had to prove that she hadn’t called her out here for needless bloodshed.

“Last we spoke….” The redhead closed her eyes, taking a deep breath that left her as a soft sight. “You told me things… things that I couldn’t believe - that I still can’t believe.”

Those cerulean hues looked down into that single red orb of Yuki’s, trying to put her faith back into someone she considered a friend. “But, we both know words are nothing but air. We both know that actions speak far louder and far clearer than words. That being said,”

Reika still held her left hand high as she dropped her right to Boreas. Slowly she drew him from his sheath, lightly tossing him up so that she could grab the blade. She held the hilt forward, gesturing to Yuki to take her Zanpakuto. This was all a gamble, but both she and Boreas seemed to think it was worth the risk. Something to reconnect the pair, to find the truth. There’d be no more fog if Yuki bit.

“I’ve talked it over with Boreas.” Her voice quivered slightly, afraid of what was to come. She’d be laying it all on the line for the sake of the truth, for the sake of their friendship. She had to know the truth. “Fight me. No tricks. No holding back. I want it all laid out on the field.”

“Good. Now call out to both her and her Zanpakuto.”

“Let’s express our emotions through combat…” Reika took a deep breath. “Our Zanpakuto will sing the songs of our grief.”

The young shinigami paused for a moment not sure what else to say as she felt the tears well up in her eyes, “You were always my friend, Yuki. I just need to know the truth. We’re warriors; both us and the spirits in our Zanpakutos. Let us speak in a way only we truly understand.”

“Good job, pup.” Boreas said softly. The spirit was genuinely proud of her, vengeance had driven her to act out before. But now, now she was speaking her own truth, her own actions.

Straightening out from her bow, she was surprised to spot a genuine smile upon the girl's face. It caused her tail to twitch once behind her, half-wagging for just a moment. She had to somewhat steel herself against it. Yuki had not fully forgiven Reika for what she'd done. As much as she didn't want to consider it, even this could be a ploy.

She remained silent while Reika spoke. An unblinking red orb, unbothered by the crisp winds, focused intensely upon the woman. Her words had gotten through. Maybe.

A hand moved towards her side. Ears perked up. Her entire body tensed, muscles tightening like springs in preparation for any hostile intent. Ultimately the weapon was pointed towards her, only this time the wrong way. Hilt first. She couldn't make an attack like this.

It was a strange offer. One one hand, she was trying to hand over her blade. Yet on the other hand, she wanted to fight. To express their true selves to one another. That she could understand. Battle was when she really felt like herself. But to go all out?

There was a few moments of silence. Silence between Yuki and Reika. Silence between Yuki and her spirits. Silence even within her mind. Only the wind spoke. The beating of hearts. Misty breath. Faint muffled sounds of snowflakes making contact with the ground.

You can trust us.

You can trust yourself.

Her right hand moved to her left, grasping at the hilt of her zanpakuto. Steel slowly emerged as the weapon was drawn out and held at her side. They were right, of course. She had to get over this hesitation.

"Very well."

Yuki's free hand raised, clawed finger pointing at Boreas.

"I don't understand your intention fully, though. Will you not require your blade?"

Cerulean eyes watched as Yuki grasped her zankpakuto and drew it from its sheath, accepting the proposition's purpose. The silence between them was finally broken, the tension breaking completely when the wolf asked her question. A half-cocked smile crossed Reika’s face as she shook her head.

“Glad to see you’re still a goof.”

The redhead simply threw the blade into the air, catching it smoothly by the hilt with one hand as she stepped back from her opponent. “I was merely showing you that I meant no harm by presenting Boreas to you. Now-”

Only a few yards away, Reika eyed her opponent. It had been some time since the pair had fought. Even then it wasn’t really a proper fight, just a pathetic ambush. That day she got to see the true and terrifying power the little shinigami had. That murderous intent still haunted her dreams at night. Nothing could stop the beserkering beast save whatever luck had been on Reika’s side.

Having only seen Yuki spar, this was going to be interesting. “Let’s get this started. Show me the truth.” Closing her eyes, the shinigami focused her spiritual energy, the air around her stirring as black tendrils began to waver forth from her body. “Boreas, howl!”

Darkness coalesced around Reika in a dark sphere before shattering, casting a chilled wind around the area, the smell of a rainstorm washing over the pair. The shinigami had been training hard since their last meeting. It was all she could do to keep herself sane, to fight the inner turmoil. Now she’d be able to show it was all worth it.

Cascading wind currents wrapped around Boreas as his owner held him before her. “May the wind be at your back, Yuki.” In an instant, Reika vanished from sight, only to appear before her opponent, winds whipping ferociously around her, hair billowing in the currents as she held Boreas high above her head, ready to smash down on her friend.

A goof? Had she misinterpreted something? Her head cocked slightly to the side, red orb following the woman's sword as it was flipped around in preparation for their fight. It had been a gesture. Right. That made sense.

"Oh."

Her eye closed, blade lifted to settle defensively in front of herself while Reika backed away. It would be fine. She wouldn't lose control this time. Just a friendly fight. A battle for the truth, for their friendship. Trust in Kokoro. Trust in Katsumi. Trust in herself.

"Our fight might attract others."

She opened her eye once more, settling it upon the woman. Something to keep in mind, but it wasn't going to stop her. This was important enough to her that she'd be fine taking that risk. If she had to fight all of Soul Society then so be it.

Reiatsu erupted from Reika's form. Boreas was summoned forth. She wasn't holding back. Yuki hesitated. In the next moment the woman stood before her, blade raised overhead, winds flowing from her body, casting out a whirling mass of snow. The wolf jumped back, blade raised to meet her friend's.

Her eye widened in surprise at the impact. Reika had grown much stronger and her blade much quicker. There was a brief pause before her swipe completed, drawing a slight line of red across Yuki's collar bone. Overpowering Reika was out of the question. At least, physically overpowering her.

Very well.

"To tomoni."

Thick black flames erupted from her body, briefly obscuring her from view as a wave of pressure clashed briefly against Reika's winds. After a few moments they died down, now flowing slowly from her body, leaking up towards the sky from both the new wound and from beneath her eyepatch. Teeth grit together, ears folded back, and fingers tightened their grip against the hilt of her blade.

Focus.

You got this!

I got this.

Gathering spiritual energy along the edge of her blade, Yuki cleaved it outwards in an arch! Another wave of pressure emerged from the attack, concentrated enough to cut and aiming to slam into Reika, although withheld to roughly half power. A neat trick she'd learned when she'd mastered the art of Zanjutsu, courtesy of Watari. Would she anticipate it? Did she know of it? Could she withstand it?

"You've grown stronger."

Yuki jumped back, her blade meeting with the shinigami’s just as expected. There was no need to rush in and try to get the kill. This was a warrior’s duel. Skill, talent, and the lust for victory would show each other their true heart’s desire. Who would win in the end? It was hard to say - hard to even matter. They were after each other's hearts, not death.

Still, the attack’s energy slipped through, leaving a red line across Yuki’s collarbone. “Tsk.” Reika uttered through gritted teeth. She wanted more, needed more power. The little shinigami easily outclassed her with the zanpakuto, but she’d have to find a way to match her otherwise.

Then, those ill-fated words were spoken, the ones that seemed to etch their way into the redhead’s nightmares. Time seemed to stand still as those black flames erupted from Yuki’s body, sending chills down Reika’s body. No matter how many times that night ran through her head, she couldn’t escape the fear that coursed through her. That little shinigami turned from a cute friend to a beast with a vendetta.

Reika faltered as she landed, quickly jumping back several yards as she watched Yuki gather energy in her blade. “What in the nine hells is she planning!?”

A rage of energy slashed across the horizon, lashing out straight toward Reika. What to do? What to do!? Boreas seemed to laugh across her mind, tempting her with tantalizing thoughts of his true power. The wind-swept plains of his world seemed to call out across her mind.

Two hands wrapped around the hilt of Boreas as Reika called upon his power, channeling the winds to surround her blade like a gray vortex. She swung the zanpakuto like a baseball player taking the strike at a ball, sending a cascade of spiritual energy in a concentrated blast. The two powers struck each other true, exploding like a bomb.

Energy rushed across the area, the trees surrounding them whipping about, groaning under the force as a few cracked free from their trunks, falling to the ground as the ground before the pair was scored with channels of energy. The Suzumei didn’t waste any time, using the boon Boreas had given her. Blessed by the wind, she swung her blade once again, sending another cascade of wind toward Yuki before disappearing from sight.

Blink. Reika appeared several yards behind Yuki, blade ready to send another strike at her dear friend. “So have you.” She muttered behind the pup, knowing full well that the little shinigami could easily hear her before she unleashed a second cascaded of energy at her.

Peace in Your Violence Empty Re: Peace in Your Violence

Perhaps she should not have held back. The swift arc of power was met by a swirling vortex, and upon colliding with one another they detonated. Winds howled and whipped past the little wolf. Everything was blanketed by a white haze of freshly fallen snow. It took some effort to remain on her feet, the Shinigami forced to lean slightly into the blast to remain upright.

I'll need to overpower her with that. Physically, she has me beat.

The thick blanket of white was suddenly split open by a swirling mass of winds. Ears rose. Her right twitched. Movement behind herself. Reika's voice. She backed up towards it. Winds roared to life from Reika's direction.

An attack from both sides. Within that moment a plan formulated within the little wolf's mind. If there was one thing she knew, one thing that she had really mastered besides her blade, it was combat. She was supposed to be the Captain of the Fifth, after all.

Twisting around, Yuki unleashed a cleave from her blade, Reiatsu cast forth from the edge in an invisible arc. It wasn't aimed towards Reika's attack. More reiatsu pooled within her feet. Winds began to rip and tear at her clothes and flesh from both sides as each attack closed in. Both were dangerously close.

An enormous eruption emerged from where she had been standing as both of Reika's attacks collided with one another, blanketing the area with white once more. Winds whirled about for a few moments, and as they finally passed an air of silence befell the area.

CRACK!

Wood snapped and crackled to Reika's south. Something moved.

It wasn't Yuki. Her attack had been aimed at one of the trees settled along the edge of the clearing. A cut to weaken it. The detonation to push it further. Gravity brought it down. One big distraction.

Yuki swept in from the north, rushing low to the ground. She was covered with mostly minor wounds, black flames slowly leaking from each. A swift, low hop once Reika was in sight carried her forth, just off the ground so as to avoid making sounds. Perhaps her presence would be felt. Or perhaps Reika had anticipated it. It didn't matter. She had to be clever here. This was Yuki the huntress.

Steel flashed out twice, two swift strikes aimed towards her friend's legs. Behind the knees. The calves. Whatever she could. Slowing Reika down was important.

When she made contact with the ground again she slid for a few feet within the snow, tail swiping out to help with halting her momentum, and to assist with balance. She twisted herself, aiming to keep Reika within her line of sight. "All this time I was worried for you. Eaten away by guilt. It still haunts me."

They were supposed to open their souls to one another, weren't they? That was her purpose for being here. Not to kill one another. Not to capture one another, although she would if she were successful here. Not for vengeance, or to show off, or any petty little thing.

"It is my fault that you were lured in by him. I'll never forgive myself for that."

She paused, straightening herself out, blade readied defensively. "I should not have tried to save him. But I will save you."

Peace in Your Violence Empty Re: Peace in Your Violence

Post by Reika Suzumei Sat Nov 05, 2022 6:41 pm

The violence of the attack caused Yuki to lean into the blow, barely able to stand. Damn, she was far stronger still, despite all the training, and all the fights she had been through. The durability of Yuki was far beyond what Reika could muster even in a simple sparring contest. “Damn it.”

The damn noble had come far, far ahead of the former commoner and her simple upbringing. Was this a blessing or the curse of being a member of the nobles? No, Reika was a member of a noble family now. She was a damned member of the Suzumei. She had to try harder, and pull out all the stops. Reika had to fight from her heart and show all the cards she had against her friend. There was to be nothing left behind!

White.

White upon white.

Their attacks seemed to cause nothing but violence and blizzards as their energies face one another.

The humans of this world would surely see this fight on their radar as it sent the area into a frenzy. Cascades of snow and wind seemed to wrap the area in the vortex of their fight. Reika was thankful she dragged herself this far out away from civilization. Far away from humans and hollows alike.

Crack!

“Huh?” Reika turned in time to see a tree falling toward her. Why didn’t she anticipate that Yuki would use the environment against her!?

Using Boreas’ blessing, she moved away from the tree, only to feel the cold cuts of Yuki as the little shinigami cut hard against her calves, causing the shinigami to fall to her knees, using her zanpakuto to brace her collapse. “Damn it.” She thought to herself, cursing to herself as she hadn’t been quick enough to anticipate Yuki’s next move.

Blood dripped from the fresh wounds as she used her blade to pull herself right as Yuki spoke. “Watari gave me a home!” She yelled as she looked at Yuki across the field. “He showed me the truth - protected me. He showed me what most of the shinigami in all the divisions would not. He trained me while everyone else was far too ‘busy’.”

Reika called upon Boreas, surrounding herself in a sphere of wind energy. A whirlwind surrounded her as a defensive barrier against physical attacks. “He showed me the truth about you and Zenji. How you two gilded my path into a ranked member of a division, giggling along the way about how easy it was.”

The redhead vanished, only leaving a trail of blood visible in the snow as they darted toward Yuki. A blizzard of snow followed in her wake as she stuttered forward without wind resistance. Reika roared as she appeared before Yuki, her blade drawn back as she attempted a horizontal slash against the little shinigami. “I loved you!”

Peace in Your Violence Empty Re: Peace in Your Violence

Post by Yuki Kameko Sat Nov 05, 2022 9:34 pm

Crimson ran along the edge of her blade, gathered at the tsuba, and dripped to the snow at her feet. Clean hits had been delivered upon Reika's body. Her calves. Hopefully it would slow her. Make this easier. Let her hold back. Even so, she felt nothing but sadness for having landed them. Guilt, even.

None of this should have happened.

As Reika crumpled to the ground Yuki took a worried step forward, lowering her blade. Her normally apathetic gaze faltered, lips softening into a frown. She wanted to reach out. To help her friend to her feet. Yuki wanted to be there for her!

She went still at Reika's words. Gave her a home? What did she mean by that? Was that what this was all about?

"A home? You joined his family?" Yuki whispered in disbelief.

The truth? What truths could Watari have possibly shown her? Training. Poisonous words. A home. Those were the weapons that he had used.

You should have removed his tongue, at least.

Guilt bit at the back of her mind and clutched at her heart, squeezing the life from her. It was as though someone had punched her in the gut. She really could have avoided all of this. Changing herself, attempting to better herself, had led to so much suffering.

Did she not deserve a better life?

Winds kicked up around her, drawing her attention just in time to notice Reika's position set before her. The woman's blade was already moving. A horizontal cleave. Yuki raised her sword. She was too slow. Steel cut into her arm, splattering blood across the snow for a brief moment, only for it to be replaced by the slow drip of black flames. While she had managed to catch the attack before it fully removed her arm, she was definitely going to require some work to keep it on following the fight.

But none of that mattered to her in the moment. Her gaze was set upon her friend. She stepped closer, ignoring the weapon imbedded within her body. Pain filled her expression, although not for the wounds she had taken.

"I wanted to give you a home. To bring you into my home. That was always my plan."

Her ears lowered to the sides of her head. She felt moisture gathering within her eyes. That was going to make it difficult to continue, but she didn't care. All of this should have already been said.

"But I thought that my name was unworthy. I was trying to change that, to give you something better. To accept you as a sister into a clan that you could be proud of joining."

Yuki's gaze finally lowered as the weight of her guilt grew too heavy to bear. "I didn't know that you needed protecting. Maybe that is just an excuse. You are my friend. I should have seen it. I should have trained you. I should have just invited you. Maybe it wasn't enough, maybe it wasn't as much as I wanted to give you, but I should have."

Either way she looked at it, this was still partially her fault. How could she even fix this? By killing Watari? Would that even be enough now? She couldn't even give her a noble name. That was what she had wanted, and Watari had been able to provide that to her.

She pushed her blade against Reika's. With the power provided by her new wound, Yuki even managed to dislodge it from her body. A slow, careful push. Attacking her right now felt wrong, but then so many things felt wrong at the moment. Would she attack? Continue the fight? Yuki didn't know. She didn't care.

Reika had hurt her. There was no doubt about that. She had killed her friend, slaughtered her retainers, and destroyed her home. What she did led to her having any titles stripped away. Banishment from Soul Society. But part of that was Watari. And, unknowingly, Yuki had started this. At least from Reika's point of view.

"I still love you, Reika."

Love. Watari had asked her about that word. It was still something she wrestled with. But she knew this much at least. What she felt for Reika was love. Nothing else explained her desire to save the girl, to make up despite everything that had happened.

"Please. Come home with me. I assure you, I never plotted anything against you. I miss you. I just want my friend back."

Peace in Your Violence Empty Re: Peace in Your Violence

Post by Reika Suzumei Sat Nov 05, 2022 10:11 pm

The strike hit true as snow scattered around them, falling fresh as if blessed from the skies above. Crimson hue struck the ground even as it Reika’s blade met Yuki, but it felt like a hollow victory as black flames licked the earth. It seemed like Yuki’s words cut deeper than the strongest blade.

Yuki’s ears lowered as she spoke as if a deep shame was held over her, deeper than the curse that had befallen her family.

Words about wanting to give her a family, words of unworthiness, and guilt left the little shinigami. They cut deep, deeper than any knife, any shame that could befall a shinigami. Reika could feel her eyes start to water, her vision growing blurry by the second as Yuki confessed everything - all her wants and dreams.

The young shinigami lost herself in the moment, barely realizing the wolf was pressing back against her until it was too late. Reika’s blade was pushed free from Yuki as black flames licked the fresh wound, causing her to scatter a few feet back, looking at what she had done.

She was caught between two worlds - one of peace and one of anguish. All the little shinigami wanted was to find a place of her own, to find peace. Reika wanted to grow and become wanted, and loved. Instead, she was found wanting and confused, used by forces who seemed ever-changing as the wind surrounding her zanpakuto.

Lost and confused, she didn’t know what to do. Watari’s words still lingered in her mind, like venom. Everything Yuki said seemed like a cure for what ailed her. Still, she faltered. Unsure what to do.

The two worlds surrounding her seemed to collide as she fought the tears that strained her eyes. Boreas called: he wanted to fight. Yuki’s words called for peace

Watari. The man called for death.

This.

That.

Death.

Everything came raging in the shinigami’s mind. Loud. Louder. Loudest.

The world seemed to be screaming. Everyone wanted their piece and Reika stood at the center as the voices echoed through her mind over and over again as a cascade of din.

Snikt!

Boreas sank hard just below Reika’s chest, just as she had done to Yuki as she looked at the little shinigami with hollow eyes. Blood splayed forth as she staggered forward.

Step by step, she drew closer to the little shinigami, drawing the woman into a hug, causing the zanpakuto to press deeper and deeper into her torse as her words came softly. “I only wanted friends. I wanted to be wanted - needed. I… I never wanted to be used like-” Reika sunk to one knee, letting go of Yuki as she braced herself against the ground.

“I’ve loved you as a sister, Yuki.” A soft chuckle left her as she released her grasp of the little pup, putting her right hand around the hilt of Borea’s as she tried to pull him free. “Forgive me.” Her words came softly as she gestured to the zanpakuto. “Forgive a fool, sister?”

Peace in Your Violence Empty Re: Peace in Your Violence

Win.

I need to win.

Take her back.

I need to fix this.

You can do it!

Please. Just let me do something right!

Blood dripped heavily to the ground in front of Reika. Yuki's eye widened in horror, tears finally slipping free as the woman stabbed herself.

"Stop" she whispered, the tip of her blade meeting the ground as she nearly lost her grip upon it. However, before she could approach, Reika stepped in to meet her. Pulled her into a hug. She wanted this. But it was hurting her friend.

She didn't know what to do. Yuki stood absolutely still. Only when Reika dropped to a knee did she reach out, hands settling against the woman's shoulders in order to keep her upright. Of course she was worried when Reika moved to withdraw the blade. Wouldn't that make it worse? But maybe she could heal it?

A request. Reika put forth a silly, silly request. Silly because it wasn't even needed. It hadn't been for some time.

Leaning forward, she settled her forehead against her friend's, eye shutting while tears ran down her cheeks. "I already forgave you, sister." Having family again. That was a strange feeling. A warmth which she had thought lost forever.

Even so, she wouldn't ask for her own forgiveness. She didn't deserve it. Too much pain had been inflicted upon Reika. Upon Meili. So many others had suffered at her hands.

Maybe there really was too much for her to fix?

She could try, at least. That's all she could do.

Starting with Reika, for she was still the most vulnerable.

One hand lowered to the hilt of Boreas. She didn't pull it out, but she wouldn't impede Reika's efforts either. "What do I do? Can you fix this?"

It wasn't easy to maintain her Shikai. She wanted to release it. They weren't fighting. But doing so put her on a timer. She would lose blood quickly. Still, at least now she could control it. She wasn't just some mindless beast. Not anymore.

Pain.

Once the words had left Reika, all she could feel was a dull throb in her body. A tingling warmth seemed to emit from where Boreas was embedded into her torso. Cold - cold seemed to flow from the wound as shock took hold of her body. The pain seemed to be gone until she took a breath, sending shockwave after shockwave.

She barely noticed that Yuki rested her forehead against hers. The little shinigami’s skin felt warm against the cool and clammy skin of Reika’s. It felt like bliss, a moment of comfort in a raging storm that caused the young shinigami to close her eyes as Yuki spoke.

Sweet words on a melancholy wind.

Yuki wanted to help. She wanted to try! But there was nothing for her to do to help. Yuki’s forte was in fighting, not kido.

“Heh.” A weak chuckle left Reika as she raised her head, grimacing as she did so. The young woman closed her left eye as she winced.

“Can I?” The Shinigami had no idea if she could.

Practicing kido in the human world is a little more daunting than in the Soul Society. Destruction and the collateral damage caused by it could cause death… and even more hollows to appear. While she did try on the outskirts of town, her training with it seemed to crawl to a standstill unless it was against hollows.

“M-maybe.” Reika flashed that old cheerful grin as she gave a weak thumbs-up to Yuki. “But… I’m gonna n-need your help.”

Gingerly, Reika pressed the fingers of her left hand around the wound, covering her fingers in blood as she let out a haggard breath. “Chiyudou #27: Chintsuuzai.” Green light began to emit from the redhead’s fingers, illuminating the wound as the pain began to dull. Numbness eked in, causing Reika to relax her posture, almost feeling sleepy as she felt the weight of the world tug against her eyes.

Boreas returned to his sealed state as a soft sigh of relief left the shinigami. She sound tired as she looked to Yuki, “Pull.” The woman’s right hand remained shaky on her zanpakuto. “I can’t do it myself. But, before you do. I know you’re not good at kido, but I’m going to need you to try. As soon as Boreas is free, I need you to put your hand on my wound and repeat the following: heal the broken bonds, mend the flesh. Chiyudou #72: Geneisousa.”

Reika would do her best to help, but she wasn’t like Yuki. She could keep fighting as hard as she could, but Yuki’s limit was far beyond a normal shinigami like her.

“Do it.”
