Well it was done. There was no pulling back now. This time in three days he would be facing Lieutenant Nagato Ishikawa. The man had held his position in the Third from long before Zenji had even been born. He didn’t imagine it would be an easy one to shift but he had to. For the good of the Soul Society and the betterment of his brethren.

He was in a private part of the Clan Estate, away from prying eyes, having erected the Kakushi Toride barrier around the area to keep anyone from hearing, seeing or sensing him. He couldn’t risk anyone intruding.

Across from him stood the familiar figure in unusual surroundings. Binbōgami appeared as a tall shrine maiden, with an athletic build and long black hair along with pale skin. Her glowing red eyes burned into him while the multitude of scars criss-crossed her entire body, easy to see against the light tone of her skin.

“We’re really doing this?” she asked him in a tone of annoyance and… something else. Fear?

This was the first time he’d managed to fully materialise her in the real world. Against her will to. Rather than being pulled into her world he’d dragged her out into his.

“You know why.”

The Spirit sneered. “Fine. I’ll kick your ass here. Whatever it takes to teach you who the fuck is in charge.”

Zenji gritted his teeth as he leapt forward and swung his staff at her head which she parried easily and delivered a straight punch to his gut sending the Shinigami flying backwards. Zenji hit the ground hard but as he rolled to his feet his hands came out. “Hadō #63. Raikōhō!”

The lightning tore across the space between them towards the Spirit. Holding out her hand black mist swirled as it condensed into a black katana which she used to cut the oncoming spell in half. “I don’t think so boy.”

Zenji shot forward, flickering with a flash step, as he swung the staff downwards towards her which she raised her blade lazily to parry however at the last moment the staff changed direction to slam into her ribs.

Binbōgami stumbled back gasping in pain before snarling in anger. “Little Zenji has been keeping secrets.” she hissed.

It was true. Zenji had learnt to built mental blockades between himself and the Spirit so he couldn’t hear her but also so that she couldn’t hear or see him. She hadn’t known about that second part, it had been subtle. So that she thought he was sleeping while he worked in secret. He’d done many things during those hours but foremost he’d visited the instructors in the Third Division to learn proper physical combat. Hand-to-Hand Combat, Swordsmanship but primarily staff fighting. He was still a beginner but he was a damn sight better than he’d been in over e century.

Binbōgami raised her blade in anger as she advanced on him. He could throw a few surprises at her but he wasn’t going to defeat her with them. As her red eyes began glowing brighter Zenji couldn’t help but feel a flutter of fear.

This was when the real game began.

“Hadō #4. Byakurai!”

The blue lightning shot towards the Spirit but she skipped aside with ease as the spell missed and smashed into the stone tiles that made up this courtyard. Small pieces of stone broke across the ground leaving debris behind.

As she approached him, taking her time she leisurely spun her blade showing nothing but contempt for her supposed partner. “Hadō #31. Shakkahō!” Zenji yelled. The fiery ball of destruction was as effective as it’s forerunner. The spell flew towards the woman but she jumped it with no problem causing it to tear up the ground even more.

Stil flying through the air from her powerful jump, black sword raised above her head, she flew towards her opponent.

Levitating his Staff in front of him Zenji tapped the end causing it to spin on the spot and then he shouted “Hadō #58. Tenran!”

The tornado-like blast fired outwards towards the airborne Spirit enveloping her. He heard a curse from within the blast as she was thrown backwards smashing into the ground with enough force to shatter the tiles of the courtyard.

The place was getting ruined but that was the least of Zenji’s worries.

“Enough games!”

The woman flickered with what appeared to be a flash step appearing right in front of Zenji before he could possibly utter another spell. Catching the blade with his staff the force of the blow almost drove the Shinigami to his knees.

“You can’t beat me in close quarter combat.” she mocked, easily overpowering her partner.

Zenji felt a smirk touch his lips. “Oh I know. Tsuzuri Raiden.” he said softly. Lightning rippled up his staff and down her sword electrocuting the woman as she let out a cry as she fell back smoking.

“Do you get it Binbōgami? I am the Shinigami and you are the Zanpakutō. I am the master!” he said coldly, his voice turning to one of steel. The meek scholar had been smothered more and more as the days went by. He had to kill the Monk and become the Warrior that the Gotei needed. “You will obey!”

Binbōgami shrieked her fury as she leapt to her feet, blade still in hand, and Zenji snarled. “Hadō #88. Hiryū Gekizoku Shinten Raihō!” roared the Kido Master.

The spell slammed into the Spirit and tore up the ground as it ripped through the Courtyard shattering the barrier he had placed around the area. Zenji was breathing heavily as he looked around for Binbōgami. Unable to see her he wondered if the woman had materialised, he couldn’t really kill her after all.

Surveying the damage he sighed. His uncle was going to definitely kill him over the cost to fix the courtyard.

“Too slow boy.”

Spinning Zenji turned in time to feel a blade being shoved into his stomach. The Shinigami gasped in pain as he looked at the pleased Spirit looking back at him. She tore the blade free and kicked Zenji to the ground.

Groaning in pain the man’s hand went to his stomach as he tried to staunch the blood loss. He looked up in pain at the sneer upon his supposed “partners” face. “Too weak. What were you saying about being the Master?”

“There’s more to power than just pure strength.” gasped Zenji before raising his hands with a cruel expression of victory on his face. “Hadō #57. Daichi Tenyō!”

The broken yard, all of it, had been part of the plan all along. Varying sizes of shattered stone began to levitate filling the air all around them. Both of Zenji’s hands clenched into fists as the stones flew inwards to smash into the woman breaking bones and tearing flesh. Crying in pain she collapsed, her sword vanishing as she did so.

Zenji knelt beside the broken woman. “Submit. There is no need for this. I need you and your power.” he offered.

For a moment he saw her gaze waver, he thought she’d accept and then the anger returned. The pride. “Fuck you.”

Sighing Zenji shook his head as he held the staff at one side. “Jubaku Binbōgami.” The staff began to break, the wood shattering, and evaporating leaving the short blade behind.

Binbōgami’s gaze shot fearfully to the knife but it was too late.

Zenji’s arm shot down to drive the knife into her throat. The woman gasped painfully before her body began to break apart into Reishi and vanish. The “corpse” was gone. Sighing the man stood up allowing the released form of his weapon to vanish and return to it’s staff form.

“This isn’t over.” the voice echoed in his mind. Zenji sighed. Yeah and he knew it.
