It had pulled at him. Just as he was about to cross over. Just as he was ready to leave this world behind to find better prey to sate him, he scented it. Though, scent was not the proper medium to describe how he knew something tantalizing was out there. He could smell it, yes, but he could taste it. Feel it. He almost thought he heard it, and he could damn near see it. The ripple in the air. The call for him to gather. To feast.

He took a single step. Just one, and then he cursed himself.

There was no thought in the action. Only instinct. Desire. Need. No curiosity. No contemplation. Just base instinct pulling him somewhere it assured him he should go. Just as Hueco Mundo did. There was a subtle distinction between the two feelings, though where he had chosen to step towards Hueco Mundo at last, he had not decided to step towards this new calling upon first feeling it with the whole of him.

And that is part of what gave him pause. Something was even more tantalizing to him than the call of his home plane to hunt and feast to the content of his heart and freedom of his mind. He did not need his memories to recognize the trap. If something was so powerful as to override his mind, then it would not even be a remote possibility that other, far more base hollow would be able to resist it.

Still, there was potential here still. One last hurrah before he left for good. The chance to cement for sure that the hollows and souls that remained on this side were too thin to sustain him long.

So he approached. He waited. He watched. He stalked around the edges of the trap that was sprung. So many stupid, thin, weak hollows going after the souls and the people. He had to wait longer. And longer. And then finally he saw it. Not the great spire of a hollow that arose in the middle of the carnage, for that he gave a wide berth. No, what El Rey saw was a hollow hunting other hollow. It dashed among the weaker things, frenzied and tearing chunks as it went. It seemed some sort of wolf, though it had none of the planning or cunning El Rey would have expected. Still, it amassed a small pile of meals for itself, and howled its victory.

'Thank you for baring your throat. You made it so easy.' he thought as he pulled the wolf hollow away from the feast it would never get the chance to dine on. Half drag, half carry, he plodded away from the carnage, none to keen on some other hollow thinking it had a chance to use his idea against him. Even in his jaws without biting down further, the lupine hollow was not so insubstantial in taste that he might discard it. Perhaps there were still hollows worth eating on this side of the veil.

Today would be a good day to think.

A sea of faceless bodies struggled together in a vast ocean of inky sludge. Their moans and screams reached out into the dark sky above them. A silver moon hung above the sea like a beacon of light in the dark void. The bodies climbed on each other with aggressive desperation. To reach the top of the pile required yanking and pulling and shoving the others aside. They were all the Flock, each body a piece of the multitude, yet they fought each other as if they were all enemies.

The beastial roar ripped through the park and the city as the scion of hunger rose to do battle with its food. A trio of crows dashed with inhuman speed through the streets of the city. They laid low, only catching glimpses of the uncontrolled horror above. The furtive spark of consciousness—now more akin to instinct than intellect—burned low in the three crows they managed to wrangle from their overwhelming evolution.

They were a shadow of themselves in the peanut sized brains of the three birds. Only the desire to escape the monster that took everything they ever were from them prevailed. Hunger was lost, gone, made manifest within the beast now terrorizing the concrete hunting ground. Their hearts raced and they moved through the streets filled with empty carnage and dead bodies. They saw other predators that were still hunting despite the chaos. Deep within their multitudes, the reduced Flock felt a kinship to these beasts.

Would they fall victim to an uncontrolled evolution, as well?

//

The instinct pushed through the ebb and flow like an obstinate force, against the grain of the world that was so nicely mixed and twirled. They felt their place was with the towering behemoth, yet something inside of them didn’t want to give it up. A will to survive pushed the trio of birds closer and closer to something that itched at them deep in their subconscious. It brought them through the winding corridors until they came upon a familiar feeling: Complexity. A nostalgic, alien feeling that held a meaning deeper than their weak synapses could comprehend.

The three birds stopped short when they flew into an alleyway. Their wings kept their heavy bodies aloft as they surveyed the scene below them. A massive black feline figure disemboweled and consumed another predator. The complexity was here. A deeper instinct than even the consciousness could control shot through the Flock like lightning. They couldn’t help but scatter. Two of the three heavy bodies lifted and fell, their great wings kicking the air below them as they dashed away back towards the familiar beast in the distance.

A single Crow stayed despite the instinctual drive to flee from the powerful predator. They alighted onto a thin power line and perched there, swaying in the gentle breeze that wafted through the city carrying the smell of soot and death. Their black, beady eyes shined in the sun of the living as their head cocked and moved to watch the cat consume its meal. Curious questions filled a Crow’s mind, but all they could do was squawk.

“Caw,” a Crow shouted to the complex hollow.

The sound of birds overhead was nothing. In the cities and the woods, wherever he could find his prey, he would find birds. That was just the way of the world. It did seem a little odd that any would be around right now though. Just a bit. Though they probably couldn't see what was causing it, there was still plenty of destruction going on. Any animal should have been far from this place a long time ago. Thoughts for later. First eat so that he could think.

And then the crow cawed at him.

El Rey paused in the middle of ripping off another bit of the wolf, and looked up, pulling the chunk with him regardless. There it was, plain as day, a crow on a power line, looking right at him. He cocked his head to the side, then glanced down at his meal. El Rey snorted and looked back to the bird. "I do not intend to leave much carrion for you. I also doubt you would have a taste for it. Hollow is an acquired taste." Talking with a bird. Perhaps the hollow wolf had not been well hinged.

And so he went back to his meal. Rip, pull, try to chew, then swallow. Four steps played out over two to three minutes with the sound of his own gullet to accompany him. And only as he felt his hunger pulling back and his mind take prominence did the significance of his actions and their trigger fall upon him. El Rey looked back up, eyes suddenly hard and fixed on the avian.

The crow could see him.

The crow could see him and it was not running.

He focused in on it, taking in the details. A beak as white as bone, three legs supporting it upon the wire. And there, among dark iridescence, he saw it. Void through which an occasional glimpse of the blue above might be glimpsed. The same thing some supremely unfortunate individual might find in his own chest shortly before their end. It was a crow, and it was a hollow.

El Rey looked back to his meal and tore another piece off to swallow. It was not worth the effort. It was certainly too small for a proper meal, and it could not speak, so there could not be any intelligence. Still, it was interesting. "I will not eat you, but if you wish for carrion, you will have to ask if it is worth the risk of getting close."

Time to see what the crow would do.

The tiny head cocked and watched the beast that felt so familiar. The fraile consciousness, struck low by the hungry rage that rampaged in the distance, watched the beast eat itself. The tastes of the two hollow were the same to a Crow. It reminded them of the Flock. Even among kin, hunger prevailed. The complex one was made of power; they spoke with their own voice and laced it with authority. A Crow only had the mimicked memory of voice and speech, but it felt wrong here.

The hollow was a part of the Flock. Despite their independence, there was no mistaking the nostalgia of an old friend. Here, now, or in the future these two—three if the half-eaten hollow was to be counted—were the same. It dawned on them that all of the predators a Crow passed on the way were kin. The Flock was much larger than a Crow would have believed.

This one was different, though. There was complexity that growled in the depths of the spiritual beast. It felt similar, if not more complex, to the Flock’s conscious boundaries. The same boundaries that the Flock tore down to start their rapid evolution. A Crow’s timid consciousness strayed from that thought. They could feel their connection to the Flock as it galvanized the air with a red angry blast. Hunger and desperation would overtake them if they returned.

A Crow hopped along the line and gave quiet mumbled caws as they contemplated their next move. Perhaps mimicked speech was incorrect; they were one in the same, after all. Instead of the consciousness returning to the Flock, it reached out to the feline in front of them. They held the complexity as they would any other crow and thought to themselves;

is it worth the risk of getting close

The question resounded like a drum beat in the cloudy void of consciousness. A bridge formed between the two estranged souls that allowed either to cross. A Crow cocked their head to watch the multitude of souls react. If they were just a stray bird, their independence would hold unique memories. What could they tell them of their travels? Of their hunger? Of their ways to control it?

And would they be willing to come home?

Well . . . That was, something. It was what he was asking for, yes, but it was exactly what he was asking for. Literally what he had asked for. And done in a manner he had not been prepared for. All the other hollows he had seen and hunted, those who could speak in any manner used their mouths. But for this one, it seemed like that wasn't an option. The only noises that came out of that beak were caws.

Instead it just put its voice directly into his head.

"Interesting."

His mask didn't allow him to grin. He wished it did, but that was of no consequence. He knew is tail was flicking and lashing behind him, but he made no effort to stop it. From the moment this little bird had appeared, it had been more and more interesting to consider the longer he sat there with it. Was there anything he could learn from it? It didn't seem particularly enlightened. On the other hand, maybe it was just sassing him for giving any conditions in which he might give up a portion of his meal.

El Rey looked down to the remains of the wolf hollow, then leaned down and bit down on a limb. He placed his paw on the torso, and quickly pulled his head up and back, ripping the limb from the body and quite a bit of flesh with it. If he was becoming more intelligent from the things he ate, then surely it would be accelerated in so small a creature. Someone else to challenge his thoughts had been so enlightening thus far with Good Bait and Speaker. Someone who saw the world from a position adjacent to his could only lead to more discovery and knowledge.

"I get what I ask for." he said, tossing the limb a couple feet away. "Very well, come eat. I have nearly had my fill. I can actually think, and plan beyond obtaining a meal." And perhaps even hallucinate that there was a small crow shaped hollow that was speaking to him in his mind.

The chunk of hollow flesh made a wet slap against the concrete street. A Crow beat their wings, holding the power line with their three claws, as their predatory brethren offered them a piece of their meal. But to a Crow their offer was a piece of themselves. The paradox was a knot in the bird’s tiny peanut brain. With a single glide, a Crow alighted to the ground in front of the morsel to further inspect the food.

Tiny claws hopped across the street, their beady black eyes watching the predator and then their food and then the predator again. They expected the bird to eat a part of themselves, a part of the Flock. Was this the way of things? The delicate consciousness sought to stay away from the unbound appetite as long as they could, but there was no hunger within the tiny bird. It raged across the city as a violent display of hollow evolution.

Despite that, they pecked at the meal to appease the independent part of themselves. Bits of flesh and meat ripped off by the bird’s beak went down their gullet. A Crow felt as if they were eating another bird, but as they did, a strength coursed through them. Multitudes bloomed and complexity grew with an increased vigor. The weak consciousness grew bolder and hopped onto the arm. They held the complexity and thought to themselves;

hunger is elsewhere for us

Images of a great cloaked beast with a curved beak mask screamed across the cityscape. On the bridge in their mind, the feline would see the Flock's true form. The beast sought to feast on the obstinate shinigami around them. A foolish venture driven by foolish desire. The bird present and in front of the cat pulled another piece of themselves off of the carrion and another thought resounded in the void of consciousness;

we will think here with the stray birdcat

The pieces they tore off of their own arm were better than any other meal. Health wasn’t a concept a Crow was familiar with, but they suspected the familiarity was somehow good for them. The multitudes within the hollow flesh gave the small creature a surge of power and intellect that they hadn’t experienced before. If the hunger was here, would it be satiated by their fellow hollow? Would there be a momentary quiet? Or would it last longer than a few bites?

He was not sure initially if the bird would actually come down. It looked to have some intelligence, and for most hollow, such an offer was sketchy at best. Assurance given only in words that they would not do as their kind was wont to. Hunt. Attack. Feed. Granted, usually hollows wouldn't exchange words, but again, they were both intelligent. To what degree might have varied, but both smart enough to recognize a trap.

That was how he rationalized the hesitation of the bird. And there in his head the thought remained, jealously guarded so that he might pick it apart later. He merely continued to eat while waiting to see if he would be joined by the other.

His tail was still flicking when it came down to the ground. It was a good thing his mask did not allow him to grin, as it would have made it very hard to finish the meal. Bone crunching in his jaw, flesh neatly chopped into chunks that could slide down his gullet. And with each of them, the fog of hunger further cleared in his mind. More of the world opened itself to him. The screams in the distance from whatever cataclysm had been wrought by instinct. Both shinigami and hollow screams of course. The blasts from some truly great beast exerting its spiritual might over the world. A fine meal it made itself out to be, but he knew he would likely starve before it was worn down to a state where he could take it on as he was now.

Again the crow pressed in at his mind, and he allowed the intrusion. After a moment, he almost wished he hadn't. The image of the great beast, thrashing, consuming, laying waste to the city as well as the shinigami around it. Consuming with no regards to itself, only the hunger that welled up within it. El Rey's eyes fixed on the bird, and now it was his turn. His instinct to run and be rid of this thing before him. This thing which so perfectly fit the instinct of a word he had heard once before.

"Gillian."

Was that terror in his voice he heard? Excitement? Anticipation? Perhaps desire. He had never encountered this thing in his first life or second, he could feel that, and yet the image of this thing was able to summon the echoes of emotion within him more vividly than anything before. Raw, primal, at the core of him. Muted by circumstance, but still very much there.

"You are part of a gillian." The words felt incredulous coming from his maw even if he had no reason to believe anything was wrong with him. He was here in an alley, ignoring the instinct to run wild, with what appeared to be a small, semi-independent portion of a gillian. There was a sound almost like tumbling boulders and rolling thunder. It confused him, but it was him. Coming from him. He was chuckling, laughing, ecstatic even. El Rey bit down on the bit of hollow, dragging it closer to the bird before taking another bite.

"You are part of a gillian. You are a gillian, yet some part of you can still think. Such great strength, such hunger, but the mind endures, even in part." All in one he was shown what it would mean to become a gillian, and given the hope that he could withstand the tide and not be washed away by the hunger. He would have to eat, perhaps regrow his intelligence, but there was a chance. And in becoming a gillian, in becoming that much stronger . . .

"Do you have a name? I can give you one for my own uses, but you have the chance to define yourself to me. Perhaps you will be the first to take it."

gillian

The word resounded in the hollow of their mind as a Crow continued to peck and hop across the offering. As they swallowed each tiny piece whole, they contemplated what the feline told them. It felt like the final piece fitting into a puzzle. There was a feeling of absolution where before there was fear. This rapid evolution they had experienced was the way of things, not a fluke of nature or some disastrous end to everything. The stray gave meaning and weight to what they were and what they had become.

Even as the birdcat brought their meal closer to a Crow, the bird was devouring the arm with an animalistic automation. It wasn’t the delicacy of the quincy or the tough, rich meat of a shinigami, but it filled them with more than any other food had before. The feline in front of them continued to speak, tail wagging behind them. They continued to impart their knowledge and wisdom. For that, a Crow respected them. They may be a stray from the Flock, but they were worthy of their independence.

Divine, alien energy invigorated the bird with each new nibble, and the consciousness expanded at a rapid pace reminiscent of the forced gillian evolution. This time, it was controlled within a single Crow. Their mind and the power behind it grew, but they knew the Flock was a mountain impossible to climb while it rampaged across the city. It would be some time before they could attempt to reach the summit and take back what was rightfully theirs.

Even so, the birdcat and the nutritional meal took their complete focus. As they finished what was left of the arm, they hopped over to the rest of the wolf carcass without hesitation. Bold was the bird who wandered under the sharp fangs of a feline predator, but a Crow cared not for fear. The moment was about knowledge and a newfound intelligence. Their mind echoed across the bridge between both complex multitudes;

we are only the Flock

we have known nothing else but the multitudes within us

No thought went into their response. As of now, their mind worked on its own, churning through synaptic responses. Learning. It was a familiar feeling, yet it wasn’t one they were wholly aware of before. This mind of theirs grew with each bite and it was quickly forming itself into what it was before becoming a gillian and what it would be long after it took back control. Again, without pretense, the thrum of a thought traveled from a Crow like a wave;

what does the stray birdcat call themselves

World End Heaven {The Flock | Closed} Empty Re: World End Heaven {The Flock | Closed}

Post by El Rey Thu Jul 16, 2020 7:59 am

"Emboldened eh?" he said softly.

Not that there was much to pick from for one like El Rey. The bones could be crunched and the marrow chewed out, or perhaps he could get the rest of the gristle, but hollow instead sat back on its haunches and settled down. Close enough for a surprise attack by either side, but what would be the point in that? No, it did not seem the bird had such a mind for that.

El Rey tilted his head in curiosity at the designation the crow gave for itself. The Flock. It knew itself as a multitude only. Was that because it was a gillian, or something that was left over from before it rose to such power. Would he also lose himself in that multitude? Would all the intelligences within merge and then escape so that his thoughts might continue somewhere else as part of a greater whole just as his body would?

But it seemed now it was time for him to answer a question. Ah, if only the mask would allow him to grin. Did he even remember how to grin? Something like baring his fangs, though not in a threatening manner. His eyes snapped back down to the bird, refocused again. He had been asked his name. His identity. But in that question was another answer about how the bird thought. Stray bird cat. Birdcat. It thought of itself as a flock, and him as a stray. The implications coupled with the voice in his head were troubling. A low rumble rolled from his chest and he tensed, considering the option of swatting the bird now.

For if it was only an illusion, then surely nothing would come of it? Nothing would come of this conversation at all if it was only a figment of his thoughts. A conjuration to give him someone worth speaking to. And what did it say of him that a slightly demented bird was his subconscious idea of a worthy participant in his many discussions?

"I . . ." He paused, took one long breath, then released it slowly. If it was a hallucination, then he was too far gone already. "I am named El Rey." It was his turn again. Though was it worth it? To speak to a hallucination and actually seek information from it would bring no truth. But, he paused, and turned his eyes to the discarded limb.

The hollow's eyes glimmered briefly, and curling, winding, but never dissipating black mist rolled off his body. Seeming as fur about his torso and limbs, and a great mane about his head. El Rey raised his paw briefly and brought it back down. Golden light dripped from between his claws, snaking out across the ground, wrapping about the bone, and dragging it closer. He brought it beneath his paw, pressed, and snapped it.

The mist was gone, and he was a beast of bone and flesh once more. The crumbled bone was inspected, and paw briefly licked. He had started to eat this hollow before the bird had appeared. It had filled him, and abated his hunger. If it too was a hallucination, then hallucinations could suppress his hunger. If they could do that, they could provide truths sufficient for him.

Again, his eyes snapped to the nearby bird, and El Rey nodded. "Why are you here, and not with your hunger, Flock? A flock should remain whole unless great danger forces dispersal."

The leer a Crow gave the feline’s show of power wasn’t deterred by their continued feast. They hopped twice away from the birdcat as it sat and then tested the bones of the slain animal. Something unique and familiar leaked out of them. It was a divine energy, an obstinate force that the Flock had grown intimate with. This stray birdcat that called themselves El Rey walked the same path as the Flock. Perhaps all predators did, even the strays.

Would they rejoin the Flock or create their own mountain?

Yet there were other predators that joined the Flock during their rapid evolution. More questions to ponder as their mind flourished into maturity, but focus was growing harder to maintain. Even as the one called El Rey questioned the legitimacy of their errant distraction, the Flock—and the hunger that now controlled it—roared on the other side of the city. Across the bridge in their mind, a Crow knew their answer to the feline’s question;

we never left the hunger, we are here and there

The roar echoed in the void of consciousness too and a Crow became the Flock. It was a focus shift, like opening and closing your eyes. Except, they were in a different place with different feelings and sights and sounds all around them. A wolf-girl shinigami’s claw gouged the mountainous hollow and it roared in pain. The Flock could feel the hunger building in retaliation. Another ball of caustic red plasma began to build within the beak.

And like closing their eyes to it, they brought themselves back to a Crow and the modest meal in front of them. Still a part of their mind raged along with the hunger, near mindless and wild, they would tear the shinigami into pieces even if it meant destroying the entire hunting ground in the process. They began to realize that this partition of their mind would only last so long. To stray like this from the Flock was a death sentence for any birdhollow.

is hunger all there is for you

what lies beyond

They must focus and think. If this independent part of the Flock was to be useful, they would need more knowledge from them. That the Flock could eat their fellow predators to satiate and even invigorate themselves was already a boon to their existence. But it was just another stopgap to keep the rising tide at bay. A bucket couldn’t move the ocean.

Never left the hunger. Now that was a truth that El Rey could not help but acknowledge. No matter how much he ate, no matter how powerful his target, the hunger was always there. He thought he might be able to sate it eternally with the sort of creatures Speaker described in his sermon, but that would be fooling himself, wouldn't it. He wouldn't be able to escape his hunger. He would only slow it down further and further to give himself more and more time to think. Could he ask for more?

Should he ask for more? Would he still be as he was now without his hunger? No, surely not. He wouldn't even be as he was before without his hunger. It was his hunger that made his time between feasts so precious. It was what drove him to consume knowledge just as fervently as the flesh of his prey. No, he could not be without his hunger. But he was more than certain he wouldn't allow it to be all there was to him. He would not be a mindless beast, even when he became such a great towering thing as The Flock claimed to be part of.

He stood full, head high as he looked down and regarded the bird hollow. He had his answer even before the question was asked. Again, he wished that he could grin with this mask. Perhaps when he changed he would be given one to allow such at thing. "No." he assured the small creature. "The hunger is not all. I seek the beyond. Knowledge. Experience. Adaptation and growth. I wish to be more than I am now, but I do not wish to be anything but myself. I am named El Rey. I am El Rey. If I were to allow that to change, I would be no better than the hollows that lose themselves to their hunger. I will learn everything there is to know about this world and all others I can access, but I will do it as me."

A Crow was down to the scraps and sinew that still clung to the bone of the felled beast. The consciousness that once held itself together by threads, was now a robust and healthy system thanks to their own flesh eaten off another’s body. The realization dawned on them that all of the predators they had seen were truely a part of the Flock, only disparate and alone. As each bite brought more wholeness and completion to the consciousness within a Crow, the words spoken by their feline self opened another path for their mind to take: Me.

The concept of individuality was strong with the birdcat and a Crow’s watchful eyes glared at the beast as they spoke. It reminded them of the hunger. The resolution to press forth without hesitation. To be. The feline existed in the comfort of who they were. The consciousness didn’t have that privilege. It was a constant battle to be themselves and be more than the hunger. But they saw an interesting conundrum fall forward from the feline. They thought in the void above the bridge;

if all predators are of the Flock, are we a me

if we are a me, then we are not The Flock

we are only Of the Flock, just as you are

just as this meal was

The cascade of thoughts trickled down the bird’s spine as the radiant sensation of realization. Pieces fitting together that the Flock or a Crow or whatever the consciousness was didn’t even have the capacity to understand before. There was a present direction that the consciousness has always felt pulled towards. They never stopped to think like this before and the results were a firework display across the synaptic networks within the expanding mind. Another thrum of a thought resounded and the bird hopped off the bones, not a piece of meat left on them;

then who are we

Even with the crow glaring at him, El Rey did not back down. By all rights, he should still be terrified of this thing. It was supposed to be part of the massive, powerful gillian off in the distance. Such a thing could deal with him as easily as he dealt with the wolf hollow earlier. And it wouldn't have to strike in a moment of weakness either. And it would be well in its rights to do so.

Maybe that was why he didn't fear it in the way he should. If it so chose, sure he could run, but if he was caught, then he was prey, and that was simply how things were.

And then it started to ask things he wasn't prepared for. The questions, their ideas, they were full of sharp corners, hard for his mind to digest. He was silent for some time as he tried to come to some sort of conclusion. Again he wondered if this was how the bird had always thought, or if this was part of it becoming a gillian. This loss of individuality. He would have liked to meet this creature before it's ascension to a new state of being, because at least then he would know for sure before he walked those same steps.

Very calmly, he reached out, and with a single claw tapped the bird on the beak.

"To be part of a collective does not deny you identity. All humans are humankind, but they fight and die to preserve their individual identities." His teeth ground together a moment as the following idea his mind put forward was uncomfortable, but was something he had to accept as possible. He knew of the true meaning behind hollow as well as the next. This bird was part of a great multitude of them. Perhaps it had a better understanding. "Even if we are all hollow, all part of The Flock, that does not mean the individuals within do not have their own ideas, their own identities. It is possible to be a great multitude, and an individual."

He looked off to the distance, eyes unfocused as another cascade of ideas, memories, emotions rolled forth. "It starts with a name." he spoke. Not so much to the bird, but as a declaration. No, there was less assertion in his voice now. It was truth put to word. "When an individual, even part of a multitude, is defined by others with a name, they can then begin to define themselves." His eyes refocused, but remained fixed on the distance. The battle where the great towering beast batted away so many shinigami like flies.

"I was named by the shinigami. A title given out of fear in an attempt to reduce the terror they held for me. I carve my own meaning into that name and can move forward on my own." he finally looked back to the bird. "Even if I am part of The Flock." El Rey knelt down again, then fully laid down with his head upon great paws as he fixed upon the bird, and looked at it on a level close to its own. Not an act of supplication.

Equality. Of what he was not certain yet.

"Do you want to step forward on your path, both as The Flock, and an individual?" His tail was flicking behind him again. Today was so unbelievably interesting.

"Do you want a name?"

World End Heaven {The Flock | Closed} Empty Re: World End Heaven {The Flock | Closed}

The question was accented by an explosive roar that ripped across the sky. Red hues danced against the clouds and it cast the city in a glow reminiscent of sunset. A Crow ignored the ruptures in the sky—the beams of electric red light—to stare at the birdcat in front of them. They ignored the pain of the Flock, the frustration, all of the emotions that clawed at the edges of the consciousness like groping fingers. Ignorance would only last so long, though. They could feel their connection to the Flock weakening. The meal only did so much to dissuade the hunger that made up the very fabric of their being. The conscious multitude that sponsored the gillian’s creation would have to return home soon.

For now, their focus seemed to be honed on the moment in front of them. In the alley, there was an energy that emanated off of the pair of predators from the Flock. Something was building inside of them, as if the anticipation of becoming an individual soul within the sea of the Flock held more power than simple words. The organic energy drew them away from the maddened hunger that flourished in the bulk of the Flock. Even as the fight raged and the city burned, the two creatures of hunger felt the rest of the saturated world of the living fall away until they were the only two left.

All distractions were gone from a Crow as the tiny bird hopped closer to the lounging cat. There was no doubt in their mind as they took this furtive step down their path. Whatever they were to the Flock and whatever the Flock was to the world, this was the first in many steps down a new path that would lead them to the answers they sought. A simple thought resounded across the bridge between their minds;

we do

And then, the waterfall came crashing down. The implication filled a Crow with anticipation that overwhelmed the consciousness. They hopped and hopped in front of the birdcat. Their wings opened in agitation and they flapped them. To define who or what they are would be a life raft in a tumultuous sea of unknowns. Their rapidly evolving mind processed the possibilities faster than the birdcat could properly muse and respond to them.

A form of rationality calmed them, as it was learning to do with the rest of the Flock. Feathers stopped fluttering and they stopped their random hopping. They cocked their head and looked over to the birdcat. Instead of allowing their baser instincts to influence them, they would have to learn to be focused and lucid like El Rey of the Flock. In their best attempt at a bow, a Crow dipped their head at their fellow predator and thought;

name us beyond the Flock, we wish to be More

World End Heaven {The Flock | Closed} Empty Re: World End Heaven {The Flock | Closed}

Oh those words. Those two little words. So simple and yet they contained so much within them. Promise. Desire. Ambition. The capacity for growth and change. Something that could learn and thus be learned from. He could hardly contain his tail now, thrashing as it did, knocking dents into the sides of the alley behind him. Surely now he was worthy of becoming his own meal. He paused a moment as the thought struck him. Was that what it meant to be a gillian, or what the flock thought. He looked down at the place where the remains of the wolf hollow once lay, now scattered to errant spiritual particles.

If the crow, The Flock, was right, he had just partaken of a meal of himself. El Rey considered this a few moments more.

And then his tail began to lash again. He felt no fear at this revelation. No horror. If The Flock was right, then he was already too far gone to care about it. No, he would do as he said, and he would forge on in this destiny. But the next step of that laid before him with such a simple and seemingly innocuous, and now proven momentous task.

Bestowing a name.

He had once looked down on names. Truly, how long had it been since that brief conversation with Not Bait? How much had he learned to change his opinion? What would his opinion become hen he learned more? He could almost feel the urge to join the little fragment in its excited dance. It wished to be more and celebrated the opportunity. He found validation in that through knowledge, through learning and suppressing his hunger to do so, he could grow and change. He could do something he couldn't think possible so long ago. Something he wouldn't have had any interest in doing.

All of the sudden his body movement stopped. His body settled in a standing position above the bowing bird, his tail was still, and his golden eyes considered the small form before him. The black mist, the cloak of his power, proof as a king, and manifestation of his will flowed down and around him. Radiant as honey but smooth as quicksilver, the gathered spiritual power pooled beneath him and around his feet, and one tendril snaked out, encircling the ground around the avian hollow's feet. The two of them lit from below thus, El Rey thought.

This great beast wanted a name. It wanted the first step along its path to being one and many. To being more than a multitude without losing what it once was. It fell to him to grant this name, and unlike so many before it, it could not be one of convenience. It would not be a simple handle used to examine the creature within his mind. He would define this oh so interesting creature as it was. Take in all he knew of it, turn it over in his mind, and speak truth to its existence. "You are powerful, but may wear the body of weakness. You are a great many, but a singular will within. Duality. Equality. You shall become more, and this is your step along that path. With this name, you shall not let any deter you from where you choose to go, what you choose to become. You are my equal in that, and it is as an equal I regard you." He lifted a paw, flexed, and extended a claw. "I name you . . ." Slowly, carefully, he reached forwards and tapped the small creature's head with the tip of his claw.

"La Fuerza. The Force. The force to drive your multitude towards the path you choose, and the force to withstand whatever challenges you encounter."

World End Heaven {The Flock | Closed} Empty Re: World End Heaven {The Flock | Closed}

The blessed organic energy that flowed outward from the two predatory souls washed over a Crow. The secret voice of the King from across the bridge resounded throughout the synaptic highways into the very fiber that made up the consciousness. As the claw tapped the peanut-sized skull of the bird, the two multitudes made a lightning spark of a connection. A Crow felt the independent birdcat’s very essence within them. Something held them back from reaching across the bridge; their focus was on the words that echoed in the void.

El Rey of the Flock’s mist covered the ground before them, casting the alleyway in a dark light that clashed against the sunset-colored sky. The colors accented the King’s face as he spoke and blessed a Crow with not just a name, but a reason for being: La Fuerza of the Flock. The force of will within the Flock. It made sense to them. Even before now, it was who they were and what they were destined to be for the Flock. The final puzzle piece fell into place and La Fuerza looked up from their bow towards their King. Their words came slow in the void between the two of them;

that is right, we are La Fuerza of the Flock

Again the bird flapped their wings, and they used their momentum to hop backwards from the feline. They cawed out of instinct, and felt the pull of the Flock. Thoughts of the chaotic mountain conjured their connection from within the consciousness. It drew them closer to the antagonistic hungry monster and they felt the beast stagger. Even as a Crow wavered from being outside of the Flock, the Flock as a whole suffered without La Fuerza. The purpose lit a fire within them. But, to what end, they were unsure. Their thoughts continued to form within the void, worries synthesized into words;

where can we find more Of the Flock

to prey on our own kind benefits the Flock more than other morsels

and we must all join together eventually

Even now, they could feel the souls they scavenged off the wolf-like predator join with their entire self. A feeling they wished to explore further. But in these hunting grounds, there were only singular human souls and the obstinate forces that surrounded them. The oversaturated world of the living was a hunting ground for predators, not a home. Surely the King would know where more were.

World End Heaven {The Flock | Closed} Empty Re: World End Heaven {The Flock | Closed}

El Rey was silent a moment. He didn't catch the hint of a question in the words. Not immediately. But once he did, he could feel the answer. The answer to where his own path would take him next. It was truly a sight to see the little crow hopping about, happy to have its name. To have its truth. There was the possibility they would meet in the future. He could only hope that the two of them would be of such a mind to speak as they did now. Or at the very least, not see each other as part of the grand feast.

The great cat then turned his head to look off into the distance. Not towards where the battle still raged, but towards the horizon. "I can feel it." he said softly. His eyes dropped back to the crow, Fuerza, once more, and he gave a small jerk of his head off towards the horizon. "There is a place. A place of hollows. It has called to me for some time. The taste of souls, even the taste of hollows on this side of the divide has grown stale." He patted a paw down on where the wolf had been. "This was my last meal on this side. It was my final proof that there is nothing here for me for some time." he stated, tone sliding towards wistful for a few moments.

"If I cannot think, I cannot learn. I cannot think if I do not eat my fill of strength. There is not enough strength here to sustain my mind. I will not forsake my thoughts in fear of the unknown." Partly to Fuerza, partly to himself. Because it was truth. He knew nothing of Hueco Mundo, The World of Hollows, other than what he could feel, and what he could reason. It would be a place purely of his kind. Their kind. He and Fuerza, cannibals of hollowkind. "The Flock will feel it, and Fuerza will guide them there."

He had not dropped the cloak of his power. There was yet more work to be done. A journey to take. A step to embrace. A life to continue to live in service of his ultimate goal. He stepped up, beside the smaller form, and planted his feet wide. His tail thrashed energetically behind him. Around them, the air, reality quaked. A low hum to a buzz. A buzz to a growl. A growl to a roar. It was coming from him. From somewhere deep within and beyond the hole in his chest, cast out against the very reality he sought to learn to much about.

The King spoke, and the world split before him to open the path.

El Rey looked into the darkness between worlds, and then back down to Fuerza. "You will guide them, and there you will find me. We are linked, more closely now than before. You shall find me, and we shall each walk our paths. Now go. Reclaim your hunger from those that seek to cut it down. Teach them your name, learn from their fear, and follow your path to where it crosses with my own."

The King turned, stepped forward, and the world closed its door behind him.

World End Heaven {The Flock | Closed} Empty Re: World End Heaven {The Flock | Closed}

we will find you

The nostalgic smell that simmered outward from the dark maw was one that Fuerza wouldn’t soon forget. The bird almost tempted a jump through behind the King, but the lucid and focused part of their mind stopped them. They would need the Flock to continue down that path. And the King was right, if they opened themselves to it, they could feel the soft tug of a place beyond the horizon. A place on the opposite side of things, living at the edge of the oversaturated world of singular souls.

It called to them.

As the mantle of the King followed behind the feline and the world shut its eye to the small alley, La Fuerza’s focus drifted back to the monstrosity they had shunned throughout their petition with the King. Within their hollow heart, they felt the call of their other half. The rage inside of them burned like a lighthouse above the buildings. Rocks stood against the spiritual grain of the world that was so nicely mixed and twirled. The obstinate shinigami, hunters of the predators and the Flock, surrounded the massive gillian. The shinigami are foolish singular souls that don’t wish for the Flock to join together. They wanted to kill the Flock.

Heavy wings beat against the ground and gathered air underneath the singular bird. If La Fuerza was to make it to the world of predators, then they would have to return to the Flock first. They were the Force, and without that, the Flock would be lost. Their agility shot them into the sky in the blink of an eye, another taste of that nostalgic smell accompanying the jump. The rip of the sonic jump thrummed and thrummed as La Fuerza continued to dash through the air. As the battle between alien energies and the Flock’s own destructive power continued, the newly named hollow flew within a singular crow towards the tendrils of spiritual chaos that lashed outward from the fight.
