Clothing and Accessories: Usually wears suits and glasses although when hunting he might put on contact glasses. He is often wearing a celtic cross which hangs from his left wrist and on his right hand he wears a Claddagh ring.

Generalized Appearance: Michael is a relatively tall man being 6 foot in height. He has a deceptively athletic frame with quite broad shoulders and powerful arms relative to the rest of his leaner build due to a life of extensive archery training and aerobic exercise. His emerald eyes could be said to gleam like gemstones and are surprisingly sharp given his youthful appearance, even hidden by his slim thin-frame glasses it is hard not to notice the green of his iris.

Michael's face is quite slim with delicate features and the man’s hair hangs down to chin length, the fringe partially obscuring his face when not tied back, and the dark colour of his hair is off-set by Michael’s very pale complexion. It is these conflicted physical attributes that hint at the man’s mixed ancestry from a history of Clann's goal to maintain Blood Purity.

When out on Quincy “business” he will often wear his hair pulled back and forgo his glasses in favour of contact lenses.

Although he appears ignorant of it Michael is an extremely attractive man due to his well-honed physique, perfectly symmetrical and almost dainty features, utterly unblemished porcelain skin and black silky hair. If anything he is perhaps a little too “pretty” to be considered handsome in the classical sense. It is amusing that the one most unaware of this seems to be Michael himself.

Spiritual Pressure Analysis: Michael’s Spiritual Energy appears as a pale blue colour flowing insubstantially. It lazily rolls off the man like fog and sometimes tendrils flicker out to brush against those who get too close which can cause them to feel as if a warm breeze is blowing against their skin. There is a soothing gentleness to the energy although this can change when affected by Michaels’ own emotional state. The Spiritual Power carries the vague scent of the sea with it.

Quirks: Michael’s Japanese is accentless, whilst this makes it clear it is very clearly artificial sounding. Meanwhile his English is heavily accented with his lilting native accent. Due to his diplomatic past Michael speaks a number of foreign languages.

Overall Personality: On the surface Michael is soft spoken, kind and gentle to others and whilst relatively private he doesn’t come across as secretive. He is quite open about his love of music and the fact that most of his time consists of either working or his hobbies. However under the surface the Irishman is a hunter at his core, raised in the secretive nobility of Quincy, he has a great deal of responsibilities that must be hidden from the world. Trained to put forth his best “mask” to the world the man hides his true emotions and hurts from even those closest to him. One aspect of his personality however that he is unable to disguise is how driven he is to fulfil his goals.

Positive Traits:

Analytical - A product of his training the Quincy is capable of quick, in the moment, analysis of the situation. As a mere mortal fighting powerful spirits he has little choice but to think on his feet.
Creative - Not only with his fighting methods but as a lifelong musician Michael is quite imaginative.
Dedicated - Michael, once he has put his mind to it, will follow through with anything. Whether that be decades of practice and training or a simple promise.
Gentle - Going beyond simple kindness the Irishman has a soft-touch and when dealing with other people the idea of violence horrifies him. A side effect of this is that he rarely shows any anger in front of others.
Moral - Michael has had a particular code of conduct and morality etched into his soul by his family’s teachings and expectations.

Negative Traits:

Angry - Hidden, deep down, Michael is still angry and bitter over the loss of his love.
Hunter - Despite how gentle the musician appears he is, at heart, a Hunter as all true Quincy are expected to be. He will coldly dispatch his quarry without any hesitation.
Prejudiced - Michael carries an overwhelming hatred towards Hollow however his disgust extends to the Shinigami too who once tried to commit genocide on his people. He views neither type of these creatures as “people” and as such his usual kindness doesn’t apply.
Repressed - Michael was always taught to not show his emotions. After over three decades of this one could not call the man emotionally healthy.
Restrained - As the heir of a prestigious bloodline Michael is expected to do certain things, in a particular way while showing the world the proper appearance. As such it is rare that Michael is ever allowed to act as his own person.

Overarching History

Michael was born as the first son to the prestigious O’Donovan Family, traditionally known as the Ó Donnabháin Clann, rumoured to be the oldest pureblood Irish Family. From a young age Michael was taught the history of his Family which claimed that they were the first Irish Spiritualists to be categorised as the Quincy being trained by a German Quincy Monk who married into the family over a thousand years ago.

Growing up Michael’s education focused largely on his Quincy training along with a musical education which his Father was particularly fond of being a skilled Violinist himself. The rest of his academic needs were taken care of by private tutors.

Michael had a relatively lonely childhood being raised in the O’Donovan Estate in County Sligo. Their Estate was a short drive away from the Family’s ancestral Castle although this was no longer lived in and was only used for special events.

Growing up he was lucky enough to have a younger brother and sister with whom he was very close for company. When he was ten he met his first non-family member Quincy, a young girl called Aine from the Hayes Family of County Cavan. It was then that he was taught that traditionally certain Mixed Blood Families served the prestigious Pure Blood Households amongst their people.

Over the years the Hayes Household would visit many times although of all their children it was Aine that Michael was closest to.

When he turned 18 his mother, against his father’s wishes, demanded the young man go to University. Due to his skill with the Violin he managed to receive entry to a good conservatoire in England called the Royal Academy of Music. During the following four years he would rarely use his Quincy powers due to focusing on his studies although he still attended family events.

The year he graduated Michael was thrown back into his Quincy duties. As was tradition he was expected to take on a Gemischt Quincy as an apprentice to foster good relations between the O’Donovans and their client Families. Michael seeing a chance to “cheat” the system a little took on his friend Aine Hayes.

In truth the following years “apprenticeship” needed very little input from Michael. Aine was largely almost as trained as Michael himself and so he mostly educated her in History, Traditions and had her as a hunting partner. This left the man plenty of time to pursue his career as a professional violinist and he played with some of the greatest orchestras in Europe and America.

In 2011, when the man was 24, Michael had an arranged marriage set up with a Japanese Echt Quincy called Ishikawa Yua. Although nervous at first he soon discovered his mother, who had arranged the entire affair, had played her cards well. Yua, two years his junior, was a professional flutist and the two found they had much in common. The two travelled together, with Aine still as Michael’s live-in apprentice, as they auditioned and played at various events and concertos. Michael soon discovered that Yua was nearly the last of her family, a half-extinct Echt Clan, and the marriage was a way to preserve their blood and traditions in some way even if their name vanished from the present day.

Two years later, while playing with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the three Quincy were approached by a few of the City’s resident Quincy. An unusually large Hollow Pack had begun hunting in the City and Berlin’s handful of Quincy needed help as there was little time to prepare. Michae, Yua and Aine joined the fight. Whilst the Hollow were eventually destroyed or driven back through Garganta there were casualties. One of these was Yua who died within a few minutes of Michael reaching her collapsed form.

Michael would soon withdraw from his public life as a Musician, although he kept playing Violin and the Flute in private, to focus on his duties as a Quincy. However for the following year his family had him live at their Estate forbidding the man from taking part in any significant hunts until he had emotionally recovered.

In truth Michael never really got over Yua’s death but he did manage to hide his feelings from those around him.

By 2015 he had released Aine from her apprenticeship and largely served the family in a more diplomatic position. His job was often to travel to other known Quincy Houses for the purpose of keeping up relationships with the scattered global community.

In 2017 Michael heard that his Aunt and Uncle had died from a cave in during a Hollow Hunt. A few months later, in 2018, his young Cousin Jessica had moved into his Family’s Estate following the death of her parents and the subsequent legal obligations that she had to take care of as their only child. As a method to try and take Jess’ mind of the tragedy Michael took the 18 year old as his apprentice. He helped continue her training but she would also accompany him on his usual diplomatic missions.

During the start of 2020 the O’Donovan’s received a request from the Japanese Ishikawa Clan. With Yua’s passing their Clan had only a handful of Quincy and few capable of true combat. They had heard tales, and noticed unusual signs, that the nearby town of Karakura had worryingly high levels of spiritual activity. They requested that the O’Donovan family investigate this in their place. Michael, feeling obligated to the Clan volunteered. Knowing the assignment would be dangerous he tried to release Jessica from her apprenticeship but the young woman threatened to cause quite a big fuss if he attempted to leave her behind. To his surprise Aine also heard about it and insisted on accompanying him.

By March 2020 the three Irish Quincy had arrived in Karakura Town. Michael, preferring to fit in with the Community, was able to get a position as a temporary Music Teacher for Karakura High School as well as an assistant for the School’s Orchestra. Laying low for a few months he has decided to begin his investigations into the area to uncover what makes the Town so unusual.

Q U I N C Y // B L O O D L I N E

Reishi Cross: Michael’s Cross is a Celtic Cross which hangs from a chain that is wrapped firmly around his left wrist at all times. The cross appears to be made of Sterling Silver and is covered in intricate vine-like patterns, for all intents and purposes it only seems like a normal piece of jewellery. To those with the talent of Reiatsu Perception they can sense that the item is soaked in spiritual energy.

Reishi Weapon: Dhiaga Bogha - Michael’s basic Spiritual Weapon is consistent with what the majority of the main branch of his family has manifested for generations. Physically the Dhiaga Bogha is a longbow consisting of blue spiritual energy. The bow produces standard blue Heilig Pfeil.

Sanrei Device: Michael carries the traditional Sanrei Device of the family heir. Taking the form of a Claddagh ring it is more subtle than the older styled Sanrei Glove. Depending on how the ring is worn it can be inactive or active, however once active it can not be removed until the Quincy’s training is complete. Current Status: Inactive

Bloodline Ability: Fonn Uaigneach - Not yet unlocked. - The O’Donovan family has a number of inheritable abilities and it is hard to say which one each family member will unlock, especially as the powers can come from the paternal or maternal bloodlines. For Michael, although he has yet to achieve it, he will inherit his Father’s ability. Fonn Uaigneach, or Haunting Melody, is a spiritual tune which gently plays across the area around the Quincy when he has his weapon materialised. It causes those who hear it to become tired and lethargic making it difficult to focus. The user of Fonn Uaigneach can choose who in the area hears it and who doesn’t allow them to pick and choose their victims.
