KARAKURA HACHIMANGŪ
Karakura Town Shinto Shrine
Name: Karakura Hachimangū
Type: Shinto Shrine
Year of Founding: 17th Century
Renown: Universally Known to Locals
Owner: Ishikawa Clan
Location: Karakura Town, Forested Hilltop
Summary
The Karakura Hachimangū is the largest Karakura Town based Shinto Shrine. The Shrine is dedicated to the kami Hachiman and the Ishikawa family has, traditionally, especially venerated the archery aspect of the kami and his role as the protector of the Japanese people.
It resides in a less built up area of the Town atop a forested hill. The main building is of the Shrine itself while an ancillary building serves as the Town’s biggest Kyudojo which is an open club for the public to join.
The Shrine hosts a number of festivals and other events throughout the year. It is also serves as the host for the Town’s Kyudo Competitions.
Facility
Main Shrine
The main complex serves as not only the Shrine but the other buildings nearby are the traditional home of the Priests.
Kyudojo
Called the “Hachiman Hall” the Kyudojo is an official club under the National Kyudo Association. Due to the Shrine’s heavy archery influences, and the use of such skills during religious ceremonies, all the Shrine Priests and Shrine Maidens are either instructors or students here.
