Name: Kiyoko Wakabayashi (若林 清子, Wakabayashi Kiyoko)

Generalized Appearance: With her small frame, and soft, innocent face, Kiyoko is far from an intimidating or authoritative figure. No, on appearance alone, she isn't all that remarkable when she walks the streets of the seireitei in her academy uniform with her dark pixie cut. Even when going about her nights in a drab kimono, its not her physique or her style of dress that brings her attention. It's her demeanor and the way she carries herself. It's that shuffling gait that she traipses across the busy streets with accompanied by the arms tucked tightly against her torso and a bowed head that provoke stares in the marketplace.
Spiritual Pressure Color: Yellow.

Overall Personality: Kiyoko is a well meaning, kind hearted, and warm spirited person towards others. She has a great deal of respect for authority and intrinsically associates it with goodness. She always tries to see the best in people.

However, she is troubled by a series of flaws. The first and foremost being that she lacks confidence in her own judgment. In the field, she is jumpy and defensive. She always expects others to make decisions for her and assumes that others know better. Whenever she makes a mistake, she immediately begins losing confidence in herself and harshly criticizing herself. She has little sense of self worth. Most troubling is how this effects her judgment. She is quick to give her trust, but reluctant to take it back, even in the presence of evidence that her first impression was erroneous. Much the same can be said about her disdain, though this type of judgment is primarily reserved for hollows.

Additionally, she has a habit of falling in and out of love in quick succession. She believes in love at first sight and has experienced it many times, but often finds the feeling to be fleeting. She also loathes the thought of going to bed alone and she feels compelled to find a new bedmate on any night that she doesn't already have one. In spite of her promiscuity, she is quite demure. She finds crass or vulgar speech to be tasteless, and dislikes talking about her romantic escapades and thus also dislikes the reputation that they bring her. This conflict between her desires and her values brings her a deep sense of shame.

Lastly, her devotion to authority is not indestructible, but it is quite rigid. When forced to make a choice, she will always choose authority above all, a lover before a friend, and anyone else before herself.

Loyalties: Kiyoko's loyalty is to the seireitei. To Kiyoko, that she owes it her allegiance is as evident as the authority that those within it wield.

Goals: To become a captain. Kiyoko thinks very little of herself, but thinks very highly of the gotei. When she had first entered the spiritual academy, she had imagined that her transition into becoming a full fledged shinigami would become her personal apotheosis. Yet even on the cusp of her graduation, she still feels sullen. She still feels lonely. And above all else, she still feels worthless.

However, during her education in the spiritual academy, she witnessed great changes in the seireitei. Whether it was the rapidly changing ranks in the gotei 6 or the recent developments in the world of the nobles, the more she witnessed, the more often a certain fantasy would play out in her head. In this fantasy, she had become a captain and all that stood in her way - her indecision, her self-hatred, her shame - had shattered and crumbled away into nothing. It is this fantasy that drives Kiyoko to push forward in her shinigami career. All in the pursuit of the day that she'll be a captain - and the day that she'll no longer be worthless.

Habits: Kiyoko has a terrible habit of being late, a consistent consequence of her frequent dalliances. Because her tardiness brings her shame, she always feels compelled to justify her lateness. However, that exact same sense of shame prevents her from actually giving a coherent explanation.

Kiyoko subconsciously draws up and makes herself seem even smaller than she is, especially when she's feeling distressed. However, as she grows more comfortable, she opens up figuratively and literally.

In her free time, she enjoys getting haircuts.

Overarching History
A girl once lived a seemingly quiet life in the Northern Rukongai. Of course, the savvy among the local wandering souls felt that her life was best described with other words. "Lively" was a popular word among the more modest. That was a kind word. "Sordid", less so, but still kinder than some of the filthier language used by some of the more immodest amongst her peers. "Filthy" and "immodest" also being words that weren't uncommon to hear when the girl was the topic of discussion. In stark contrast to that girl, the people of the Rukon's Wakabayashi District were anything but quiet.

Of course, the girl cared little for what others had to say. If it wasn't already apparent, all the girl cared for was how she felt and for a time she felt satisfied. However, in less than a decade, satisfaction had turned into contentment and contentment into resignation and misery. The girl's words towards herself began to match her peer's and eventually grew crueler than anything that anyone had ever said to her. In her own eyes, she was everything they said and worse. They were right all along.

She was dissatisfied with her life and yet she had no power to change it. Try as she might, dreams gave way to delusion, resolutions gave way to habits, and convictions gave way to momentary bliss. Soon, even her imagination began to die and she struggled to even envision living in any other way.

At her lowest, inspiration suddenly struck, seemingly from nowhere. She could become a shinigami. She had never considered it before and yet suddenly it was all she could think of. Day and night, whether she was alone or in the company of others, she would fantasize about being clad in those black robes with a blade drawn. Eventually, the day came where she couldn't hold back her excitement and anticipation any longer. In an emotional (and spiritual) explosion of energy, she approached a shinigami patrolling her district and declared her desire to become a shinigami and serve the gotei. The day that shinigami had given the girl the instructions that she needed in order to join the Shino Academy marked a dramatic change in her life's trajectory.

Upon her entrance to the Shino Academy, the girl would adopt a new name for herself: Kiyoko Wakabayashi. Wakabayashi from the district that had been her home for all these years. Kiyoko from a popular nickname she had been given during in that district. It had been ill fitting and mean spirited before, but now that she would be a resident of the Seireitei, it was perfect. With her new name, she had adopted a new persona. Kiyoko wore her hair short and diligently styled. Kiyoko was a fervent devotee to the values of the gotei. The seireitei would become where she learned, where she laughed, and where she loved, as old habits died hard. Yet still, Kiyoko was satisfied... for a time.

Much had changed in Kiyoko's life and she was truly grateful for the opportunity she had been given. She had grown powerful and would surely go to do good things as a part of the gotei. None of that really mattered though, because in spite of all that had changed around her, what hadn't changed was the girl. Even as Kiyoko, she still only cared for how she felt and she felt exactly the same. In many ways, she lived the same. Even on the cusp of graduation, the prospect of becoming a shinigami no longer filled her with hope. She still hated herself. However, though the girl had not changed, her life certainly had and the change that surrounded Kiyoko extended far beyond herself. The Seireitei had seen much upheaval throughout Kiyoko's academic career and even just before it, particular in regards to changes in long held seats. Once again, seemingly from nowhere, a sudden fantasy would emerge. In this fantasy, she was clad in not only black robes, but a white haori. She walked among her peers with pride and vigor in her step. She couldn't imagine holding such a high station of power and still being troubled by the demons that haunted her. This fantasy would drive her and continues to drive her. She will serve the gotei with every fiber of her being. She will become a captain. She will fight until her suffering ends.
