Hunting the Hunter [Closed/Geminae] Empty Hunting the Hunter [Closed/Geminae]

Everyone had seemed quite surprised when Zenji had volunteered. Which was fair enough he supposed. After all he’d been in two combat situations within the last decade. Both nearly had killed him, the first had landed him with the healers of the Third while the second would have been the end of him if some random spiritualist human hadn’t shown up and saved his damn life. People had expected the quiet Nobleman to retreat into his little office and continue paper pushing pointlessly again for another 100 years.

Instead Zenji had gone to the training grounds, he’d studied in the Clan libraries and now, when the chance came, he’d immediately volunteered for the emergency Hollow response call when it came out. There were no teams available so he was going solo. However this time he’d be ready.

He’d ran straight to the senkaimon, staff in one hand and his Denreishinki in the other. There was no need to grab a gigai, it wasn’t one of those kinds of missions and he only paused in the courtyard for the assignment of a Jigokuchō. Luckily the black butterflies were quick enough little creatures and it led Zenji through the gateway.

It didn’t take long for the Shinigami to appear in the real world, standing over an all too familiar town. Suppressing the dark memories associated with the place Zenji looked pulled out his phone-like device. Reading the screen he saw three Hollow blips and began to move towards them when suddenly one flickered out.

“What?” he said aloud in surprise.

The signal hadn’t faded away so the Hollow hadn’t just phased away to it’s own world. Nor had it been purified, that would have caused a different signal but there wasn’t any other Shinigami deployed to the area at this time. None of this made any sense.

“This is bad.”

Unable to disagree with her Zenji simply nodded before setting forth towards the disappearing signal to try and get to the bottom of this new mystery. Whatever was causing this it was a Hell of a lot worst than a mere Hollow attack.

Hunting the Hunter [Closed/Geminae] Empty Re: Hunting the Hunter [Closed/Geminae]

Post by Geminae Thu Jun 18, 2020 6:49 pm

The patter of leather boots on concrete.

The roar of a beast.

The slam of an SUV sized fist striking the ground less than a meter away.

Ah, the sounds of the city at night.

When Geminae de Loure pledged to fulfill the promise she had apathetically put off, she had no idea the truth of what she had signed up for. Every bone in her body, every synapse in her brain, told her that none of those expectations mattered or should factor into her decision. She had been caught on her ass once and people died. Who she used to be made her gut turn and burble and that was good. Disgust. It was honest and it was necessary for her to evolve and evolve she might one day do but...for now...she was just angry.

Anger at her own apathy.

Anger at the preventable deaths of friends, of loved ones.

Anger at the sadness of the world that created these beasts.

'They are just a fact', her grandfather told her when he sat his granddaughter on his knee and showed him his Quincy Cross. 'Hollows are evidence of a higher order. Sin and virtue, they both lay within all men and as long as man chooses to sin, Hollows will exist. We can hate the sin but we must still love the sinner.'

As beautiful a piece of wisdom as it were, it was a much more comfortable philosophy to talk about at home in the comfort and care of the family.

She ran down the street, weaving between telephone poles and parked cars trying to circle around and stop herself from getting flanked. One Hollow was down but two more were still converging on her, hunger in their eyes and blood on their breath. Her bow held out and pointed down with an arrow at the ready, she needed time to find a shot. Things were happening somewhere around her, a signal on the horizon...not a Hollow but something else? This energy...she'd touched something like it with her senses before but it faded, hid, and played coy. This one was standing strong at least for now and it might provide just the distraction necessary for Geminae to create space.

Skidding to a halt, she turned a hard 90 degrees and cut through an alleyway. The second Hollow, this one every bit as big as the first, parked its heft over the alley and challenged her to defy its strength. The answer was simple; run under the dumb thing.

Using the loose gravel and dirt of the alleyway, she slid on her side between the beasts legs as it ripped at the ground behind her, confused that its paw held only dirt and rocks. Her victory was short-lived as both Hollows caught her scent easily enough and broke after.

This mysterious signal was a block away, maybe less.

Just in the knick of time.

Hunting the Hunter [Closed/Geminae] Empty Re: Hunting the Hunter [Closed/Geminae]

Zenji’s own movement towards the Hollow signals wasn’t as swift, trying to preserve his energies for what may come, after all the Soul Reaper had become a little more cautious and determined when it came to potential combat after last time.

Pausing he frowned and tapped the back of his neck sending a small pulse of spiritual energy down his neck and spine. “Riagādo.” A relatively simple defensive Bakudō of his Clan’s own invention. It consumed only a little power to place, and amped up it’s requirements directly from the caster, if activated. The activation would be if he was struck in the back with any form of physical or spiritual attack so, in that situation, the energy consumption was rather worth it. The barrier itself wasn’t immensely strong but should stop any common Cero if a Hollow jumped him from behind.

Relying on the phone, as his spiritual senses couldn’t go far enough for long range tracking, the Shinigami moved swiftly but cautiously through the urban landscape. When he was only a few blocks away he paused and took out his device to contact the Central Command agent overseeing his assignment. Due to it being Solo he had a direct contact to live personnel.

“HQ, this is Hatayama.” he started, the line was static for a moment before a response came.

“Acknowledged Hatayama. What is the situation?”

“One Hollow is gone, the blip erasure looks unusual. Less like it had fled and more like it had immediately vanished.”

“Understood. Likely consumed by another Hollow.”

“Maybe...” Zenji responded in a tone that clearly showed he didn’t agree.

A sigh came over the static and the agent became suddenly less patient. “There really isn’t much other option. Either you read it wrong and the Hollow returned to it’s own Realm or it was destroyed by another Hollow. There are no other Shinigami in the area so it can’t have been purified.”

Zenji disagreed with that one immediately. Although he hadn’t fought Hollow with unique powers before he had certainly read about them in AARs over the past decade while stationed in the Divisional Report Archives.

“Very well. Proceeding with caution on reconnier the situation before taking action.”

Static then “Understood.” Although the tone sounded more like whatever.

Keeping his Spiritual Pressure low the Shinigami made his way towards the signal, eventually coming to a stop upon a roof only a few buildings away. Jumping to the closest nearby building he crouched, seeing a Hollow below sniffing around seeking prey no doubt.

“Bakudō #26. Kyokkō” he said softly erasing his physical form and reiatsu from sight. Now he’d wait and see if anything unusual happened.

Hunting the Hunter [Closed/Geminae] Empty Re: Hunting the Hunter [Closed/Geminae]

Post by Geminae Fri Jun 19, 2020 9:32 pm

The tension was peaking. Geminae crouched behind a car sitting low as she could out of sight, her chest heaving and her brow glistening with sweat. For the moment she had lost her two Hollow pursuers but like bloodhounds near the fox's den, they were both aware she was out there.

The other presence she had felt loomed somewhere nearby. She felt it in one direction, shifting slowly to the other in an non-distinct sort of...fog on her spiritual horizon but she had never managed to get close enough to grab onto it, to see who or what it was. At least this mystery came with the welcomed supposition that it wasn't another enemy. If she were more cynical she would worry it was some sort of ambush predator waiting to pick off the winner but she'd have to dwell on that later. First, there needed to be a winner.

Using the mirrors of the car she sat behind and the next one up the street, she waited until the big lumbering oaf that resembled a stag crept past her down the street. Breaking in the opposite direction she loaded an arrow into position and began drawing reishi into her hand; in this state she wouldn't be able to use the high-speed movement techniques she was only beginning to master. Her own basic fleetness of foot would need to be enough to keep her safe.

As predicted, her gathering of reishi caught the beast's attention as it roared, turned, and broke into pursuit.

The two raced, Geminae down the sidewalk and the Hollow down the street, the larger beast waiting for an opportunity to pounce on her. Unbeknowst to both, their chase culminating but a few dozen meters past Zenji's safe perch on the rooftop above!

Cutting laterally, the nimble Quincy cut between two parked cars and directly into the Hollow's path of rampage. As it roared and reared back for its strike, she leapt into the air and turned her torso, raising the bow for a clean shot as she put her fate wholly in the committed hands of this amateurish plan.

In her hand, white and blue and purple shards of reishi coalesced around the shaft and arrowhead, cloaking the simple weapon in an otherworldly power that seemed to grow by the second until it was practically a bright spear of fury. In an instant, the arrow was released and the two fell to the ground.

A thud.

Smoke.

The dust and debris cleared and the pained cough of a human woman cut through the silence as Geminae pulled herself up. The Hollow's vital fluids leaking into a horseshoe-shaped pool of blood around her in the mini-crater its impact made.

An arrow lodged in the mask with one long crack having split it height-wise.

Shards of bone splintered and fell. The Hollow burned up in purple and black flame rather than scattering into sand and spiritual particles.

Up the street, the third and final Hollow bellowed into the night.

"Ehhh, casse-toi!" she cursed into the streetlight as she drew another arrow from her quiver. No rest for the wicked, it seemed.

Hunting the Hunter [Closed/Geminae] Empty Re: Hunting the Hunter [Closed/Geminae]

Post by Zenji Hatayama Sun Jun 21, 2020 1:19 pm

The Soul Reaper’s Spiritual Senses were relatively refined, thanks to his extensive experience with manipulating Reiryoku to power spells, however they were not very wide reaching. So it was only when the woman and Hollow came into view that he really sensed their presence. Unlike this last meeting with a mortal he at least this time realised she was not a Soul Reaper but a member of the Living World.

‘Another Spiritualist? How many of them are there in this town?’

Zenji didn’t even know Mortals could be spiritually active, beyond perhaps a vague feeling of unease when near spirits, but one had managed to not only see him quite clearly but also heal him from nearly fatal wounds. Now this one seemed to be hunting an actual Hollow! How odd was that? The Soul Reaper wouldn’t have any issue with Humans getting back at the Soul Eaters if it wasn’t for the fact that it couldn’t be assumed that their powers didn’t disrupt the Balance like the Quincy all those centuries ago. After all there was a very good reason why that particular race of people had been purged for the greater good.

Although concerned for the mortal’s safety this was all a great unknown. Zenji had to work out exactly what was going on before he could risk his position being given away. Besides if necessary he could jump in and try to preserve her life, and if not, he would at least make sure her soul found its way to the Soul Society.

She was fast, that much was sure, and quite brazen. She moved right into the path of the beast then her powers came into effect. A bright glow of white and blue spiritual energy as reishi was drawn towards her hand.

“Wait… wait a minute.”

The energy coalesced into what was very clearly a shortbow, more reishi drawing towards her to form an arrow.

“This is exactly as the books described them.”

Zenji was too shocked to act and he simply watched in disbelief while his mind screamed at the impossibility of what was before him. No matter how clear the Clan and Gotei history records were on this matter. They were extinct, they had been purged and as such hadn’t been seen in any sort of reportable numbers for centuries. This couldn’t be happening.

A shattering of rock and dust, or perhaps smoke, flew up as the arrow impacted with the beast while the woman, no, the Quincy who had leapt to make her attack was now falling. The Hollow was consumed in blasphemous flame after the projectile had impacted it’s mask.

“Shit” whispered his Zanpakuto.

‘Shit.’ echoed the Shinigami’s thoughts.

The Hollow wasn’t purified, this was not sending the Soul on to the next realm whether that be the Soul Society or Hell itself. This was destruction. Utter, barbaric, destruction. This was heresy against everything the Balance stood for.

However the Soul Reaper had little time to consider what to do next as he suddenly sensed the other Hollow nearby, in fact from his lookout spot he could see it quite well and unfortunately it would seem the destroyer had too. He had no time to waste and he gathered his Spiritual Energy and placed his staff on the ground.

Taking in a deep breath he acted swiftly, moving as the lady was already preparing her own attack. Pushing his hands outwards he decided to go all or nothing. “Ye lord! Mask of blood and flesh, all creation, flutter of wings, ye who bears the name of Man!” well it was all or nothing “Disintegrate, you black dog of Rondanini! Look upon yourself with horror and tear out your own throat!" Energy was gathering in each hand, but neither forming as was normal, at this point Zenji wasn’t even sure if the gambit would work. However he had to push himself, he couldn’t let the Destroyer destroy more souls in front of him. “Inferno and pandemonium, the sea barrier surges, march on to the south!"

His Spiritual Pressure was flowing uncloaked now, the illusion spell had been blasted away by the sheer amount of Reiryoku he was shaping into Spells. An orange aura blew powerfully around the Shinigami like a hot wind at which he was the centre.

Reading out with his right hand, two fingers pointed at the Hollow he breathed out before speaking clearly and strongly. “Bakudō #9. Hōrin" The tendril of orange light shot outwards to strike the unsuspecting Hollow and spun around the beast immobilizing it. With a flick upwards the tendril pulled on the Beast and, despite its size, it was thrown upwards into the air and so the Quincy’s attack would miss.

Still bound by the Shinigami’s spell the Hollow screamed it’s fury but Zenji ignored it’s outrage. He pointed his hand, palm outwards, towards the creature. “Hadō #31. Shakkahō!" this time he yelled, the effort of the twin-casting now feeling like a powerful force was pushing down on him. The ball of red fiery energy blasted outwards from the trembling limb and smashed straight into the Hollow’s mask.

It screeched it’s dying cry as it disintegrated from the attack.

Zenji felt a brief moment of exultation at the success. It was the first time he'd ever used Nijū Eishō outside of training and, even in perfect conditions, it only worked half the time for the Soul Reaper. However that self-pride was soon washed away in a sea of exhaustion. Zenji fell onto all fours breathing heavily, barely able to catch his breath. Sweat poured down his face and his arms shook but it wasn’t over, not nearly.

Grabbing his Zanpakuto he leaned on it heavily as he pushed himself to his feet. Zenji looked down at the Quincy and did his best to project strength as he shouted. “Quincy!" he called not hiding his suspicions, all the while praying he was wrong. “Come here! I wish to speak with you!"

“Whelp, I sure do hope she doesn’t attack.”

“You and me both." he whispered in response.

Hunting the Hunter [Closed/Geminae] Empty Re: Hunting the Hunter [Closed/Geminae]

Post by Geminae Sun Jun 21, 2020 9:19 pm

Although the beast would be bearing down on her shortly, Geminae still had ample time to calmly reach back for an arrow, adjust her hair out of the way, wipe a bit of sweat from her brow onto the arm of her bodysuit, and take a few long and calming breaths. Down the street, 300 meters, 250, 200, closing at its own angry and persistent pace the Hollow loomed. This one's arms were long and lanky, it body spindly and nimble. Tougher target. But at this range it didn't really matter.

She began to draw in reishi. More now, since she had time. It seeped out of the ground, from nearby bushes, out from the storm drain, from under the cars, everywhere. The iridescent blue natural mojo obeyed her command at a steady pace and streamed down her arm.

Just as things were coming together, a hot wind of spiritual energy erupted from a nearby roof. A few months earlier, less practiced in hunting as she was, that would have been enough for her to lose her arrow. But her control was refined enough, practiced enough now, to remain steady. Whoever this figure was, they were building energy up in front of them much like she was but this was much more different. More orderly, more of a 'construct' than the pure will she was formulating. Like they were following an incredibly powerful recipe. She could almost get lost in the intricate swirls and lines and turns of the Kido as the double-cast took shape.

The caster turned sidelong glances to her. Were they sizing her up? It didn't look like they were aiming their spell down at the street but rather up it. Toward the Hollow.

They yelled...something, she couldn't quite made it out over the tension of the arrow in front of her. Whatever it was, an orange light roared out in front of them racing toward the Hollow signifying she was already too late. If they were on the same side, there was no harm mutually assuring the destruction.

She turned her head, lined up her shot, and loosed the arrow.

Watching the thing blue ray of energy trail behind her arrow she furrowed her brow as the orange light bloomed and expanded and lifted upward. Her shot sailed long and far, eventually petering out and popping like a weak firework several hundred meters down the street.

A second blast, much stronger and more direct than the first, rocketed from the rooftop and evaporate the Hollow. Job's done.

'Quincy!' the rooftop sniper yelled out. How...how did he know? She reached out with her senses trying to understand who and what was atop that roof but it was a strange feeling. Unique, memorable, but unfamiliar. She's heard of Quincy who could manipulate spiritual materials to perform feats practically akin to magic but this was something...entirely different.

Geminae hopped up onto the roof of a car parked below the building this mysterious caster was perched atop. "A fellow hunter?" She asked in Japanese lilted by her French accent.

Hunting the Hunter [Closed/Geminae] Empty Re: Hunting the Hunter [Closed/Geminae]

Post by Zenji Hatayama Mon Jun 22, 2020 1:18 pm

The girl didn’t come to him but she wasn’t very far away and she did respond. At first her response caused Zenji’s blood to run cold, the only thing he could feel was a mixture of panic and fear. What the hell was he supposed to do now? Kill her? Capture her? Not with the energy he had left and the stories of the ancient Quincy were terrifying, who knew how powerful they could be? Even if he survived what should he do? Report her? Could the Soul Society literally withstand the news considering the upheaval from Watari’s Coup? Or would he have to keep his mouth shut? But that wouldn’t work either. ‘What do I do?’

“How about calming down?” his Zanpakuto asked in an uncharacteristically cold tone. If he wasn’t so panicked about the literal Destroyer of Souls standing only meters away then he might have questioned the Spirit’s slip in personality, and how it matched earlier such patterns, but for now he was clinging to her advice like a lifeline. He could sense her approval at that thought. “Pay attention my dear. She asked if you were a fellow Hunter. She doesn’t know what you are.”

She didn’t know? He would have assumed whatever Quincy was left, oh Soul King he didn’t want to consider how many more there might be, would have KOS orders for his kind. But.. if not..

“Play along.” whispered the Spirit with a tone of amusement.

Zenji used a flash step, a fairly sluggish one too, to reach ground level and stopped a few feet from the car the girl stood on. His stop was practically a stumble and the Shinigami nearly fell over his own feet. Playing the powerful warrior wasn’t going to work here so instead he’d play friendly. It was more important he survive this counter and find a way to deal with the possibly greater issue.

He could sense the Spirit’s approval at his line of planning.

Not bothering to hide his weariness he leant on his staff heavily and smiled, although his expression was somewhat strained, at the Quincy.

“Indeed Miss Quincy.” he greeted with as much warmth as he could manage, disguising his poor acting by playing up his exhaustion so that any errors could be contributed to that factor. “Although not one like you. My power comes from another source.” he chuckled gently. “My name is Nagato Ishikawa, it is a pleasure to meet you.”

“Nagato” etched out a shallow bow, leaning on his staff for support, before straightening back up. “I hope I didn’t get in the way, I just wanted to help ensure the destruction of the beast before it hurt anybody.”

Zenji kept part of his focus inwards, suppressing as much of his power as possible, whilst his stamina recovered from the earlier twin-casting.

Hunting the Hunter [Closed/Geminae] Empty Re: Hunting the Hunter [Closed/Geminae]

Strange and otherworldly as this figure was they cut a surprisingly 'real' presence in the world around them. The buildup of energy around their feet was slow enough, along with the accompanying flash step's sluggishness, that she was able to prepare herself for what was to come and not react hastily. Her fellow hunter having literally lowered himself to speak with her was worthy of meeting on 'common ground'. She climbed down from the car's roof.

"I didn't recognize your magic nor do I recognize your uniform. Are you some kind of shrine guardian? If so, charmed to make your acquaintance. I've heard many story from local families about the prowess and spiritual guidance of your order." She bowed her head to meet the well-intentioned if not ultimately dishonest greeting of 'Nagato'.

"Je m'appelle Geminae de Loure" she lilted in French, hopeful that the important part of her name got through the language barrier. "I certainly won't turn my nose up at your timely assistance. Truthfully things here are...a lot worse than I thought they would be. Most nights require my attention every few hours."

At that she sighed and looked up the street, expelling a cloud of regret for what she had resigned herself to do. Cleaning up Karakura was a messy business but it was one she knew she was obligated to carry out. Friendly faces made the burden feel lighter.

Hunting the Hunter [Closed/Geminae] Empty Re: Hunting the Hunter [Closed/Geminae]

Post by Zenji Hatayama Tue Jun 23, 2020 6:25 pm

His Zanpakuto Spirit laughed. “She’s even feeding you your lines. Just don’t do anything stupid and you won’t die”

Zenji felt conflicted. He didn’t like deceiving others but this was a Quincy which made it barely a person at all, rather a walking dangero the balance. He also felt guilty, surely as a defender of the Balance and more so as the Lord of the Hatayama it was his role, his responsibility, to destroy this abomination before him? As she spoke of having hunted other Hollow’s he felt like he’d been dealt a blow to the chest. How many souls have been extinguished? A single Hollow could be thousands of Souls and they were all just… gone.

“Play. Along.”

Taking a deep breath Zenji bowed respectfully at the woman, he’d even managed not to flinch when she approached and he kept a respectful smile on his lips. “You are most perceptive Quincy de Loure.” he said in a respectful tone. He was pretty sure that part was a surname, he’d met a Soul before whose family was called de something, however the rest he wasn’t sure which was name and which might have been a title.

“I am but a Guardian Spirit for this area, I am responsible for purifying these demons.” he stated, purposely readjusting his grip on the staff so that his sleeve would slip and reveal the jade prayer beads around his wrist. It was coincidental, a common part of the Hatayama Lord’s attire, but it worked for this story he was providing.

Giving a tired sigh which he didn’t have to feign he nodded in agreement. “You are correct that the nights seem to grow only more dangerous. It seems the hordes of these souleaters have drawn many hunters to our town. I have seen others with powers similar to yours, bows of power, who called themselves Quincy. Where those hunters part of your Clan?” he asked, trying to subtly fish for information. He had to know how common these Destroyers were. After all, up until a few minutes ago he’d believed the entire race had been extinguished over a thousand years ago.

He didn’t even know what he would, or could, do with the information if he got it. The Soul Society had been destabilised by Watari and his Cabal of ambitious blue bloods. With the destruction and crippling of long standing Clans the Seireitei, the Gotei’s place of strength, was reeling in shock. Could they even handle the news of the Quincy? Could he even risk revealing it?

Problems for later.

Hunting the Hunter [Closed/Geminae] Empty Re: Hunting the Hunter [Closed/Geminae]

Post by Zenji Hatayama Fri Jul 24, 2020 11:55 am

The conversation didn’t continue much longer, Zenji didn’t want to push his luck, despite every fibre of his being screaming at him to slay this abomination. Zenji was of Clan Hatayama and he had grown up in that pious household, with the beliefs of the Soul King and the importance of the divine Balance of Souls.

It was why he’d become a Shinigami. To defend the Balance. To fulfil his Clan’s Divine Mandate, to serve the most Holy Soul King, he had to destroy this Quincy.

Put then there was the ever present weight of his Zanpakuto on his mind, pushing against him, silently urging him to remain quiet. To keep his true identity a secret from the mortal. He had no idea how powerful she was and if she killed him then he was gone, gone from the cycle, a fate worse than any pain or death.

He had to get back and start gathering allies for the imminent threat that was coming, these monsters still existed and if the threat had not been purged all those years ago then who knew how many of them wandered the Earth now? Short lived mortals bred like rabbits after all. There could be hundreds, even thousands, by a low estimate if only just a single Quincy survived the purge a thousand years ago. If that many bow wielding men and women stepped out of the Shadows then the Gotei wouldn’t stand a chance, reality wouldn’t stand a chance, the sheer destruction of Souls in any war would wipe out the Balance. The Gotei needed to be prepared, the war had to be on their side so they could stop the Quincy without too many casualties on their side. A second Purge, a successful one, would take time to prepare.

Making his excuses the Shinigami escaped and once out of sight he opened the Senkaimon and followed the Black Butterfly back to the Soul Society.

He had work to do.
