The Reaper's Healer [Closed/Angeni] Empty The Reaper's Healer [Closed/Angeni]

The Shinigami stumbled, energy spent, through the darkened streets of Karakura Town. He hadn’t even noticed the clouds as they darkened the sky nor did he register the rain as it crashed down on his shoulders. Each step was agony induced by wounds and fatigue. He’d been injured before of course but not like this. Too much energy had been spent in his battle against the Hollow, unfortunately when it came to the Demon Arts it would appear that his skill far outweighed the power required to facilitate the greater elements of the Art.

“Just a bit further.” mumbled the Shinigami. The world was a blur. He wasn’t sure how long he had walked, how far he had dragged his feet along nor where he was even planning to go. He needed to open a Senkaimon to get home but he didn’t have the energy to even lift his staff which was scraping metallically off the ground.

“Zenji?” whispered the nameless voice, concern radiating from the single word.

“Just a bit further.”

The Hollow’s power had been a match for his own but it’s ferocity and hunger far outweighed any defense Zenji could summon. He was forced to flee. It was okay though. He had survived. They had survived.

Something rang out like a gunshot in the background, lightning or perhaps merely a car backfiring, but it was enough to invoke fear in the exhausted Shinigami. Zenji spun around, his staff half-raised in a failed defensive stance, as his gaze darted around the narrow alleyway in search of an attacker. Whilst nothing leapt at him from the shadows the quick movement had been enough to finish off what little energy the man had left. His vision swam all the worst, he teetered from one side to another before his staff clattered the ground with a loud bang. Zenji finally fell clutching the unconscious form of Suki, the young Shinigami Rookie, to his chest in an attempt to protect her from the fall.

All this time he’d been too far gone to realise that the young girl had already passed from her wounds.

The Reaper's Healer [Closed/Angeni] Empty Re: The Reaper's Healer [Closed/Angeni]

Post by Angeni Wed Jun 17, 2020 11:09 pm

She hoped she wasn't too late. The evening had been relatively uneventful, so when she felt first the sudden appearance of the spiritual presence then the alarmingly steep drop in its quality, it had been enough to immediately pull her attention away from what she was doing and fill her with concern. Whatever had happened, someone was hurt and badly. Whereas normally a healthy spiritual presence would pulse with the rhythm of a strong heartbeat, this one sputtered like a candle's flame that had reached the very end of its wick and struggled to stay alight.

She felt a sense of urgency, yet it was not one wrought by panic. If anything, it was simply because she hoped that she would not have to pass on a soul that could have been saved. She didn't want whoever this waning spiritual presence to belong to becoming an "if only I had gotten there sooner." So she sprinted across rooftops and down city streets, wholly unabashed by the pouring rain that had drenched her to the skin mere moments after she had stepped foot out of her home. A deft leap was taken from the curb just as she cleared the crosswalk. Anyone nearby that was unaware of her superhuman nature would no doubt be rooted in place with stunned disbelief as the woman ascended what was at least thirty feet to grab ahold of the roof ledge above her and easily hoist herself up then, without losing momentum or stride, resume her full sprint and continue on her way.

"Please let me get there in time. Please don't be too late." The words were spoken in a hushed mantra, repeated over and over as she drew closer and closer to the fading presence. Finally, as she crossed from one garage roof preparing to leap up onto another roof, she skidded to a sudden stop, pinwheeling her arms momentarily to balance herself and prevent herself from tumbling to the alleyway below. A smell had assaulted her nose, a smell that she was very familiar with and easily recognized; it was the scent of blood. Peering into the alleyway below her, she saw them: a young boy riddled with profusely bleeding wounds and a girl who barely looked past adolescence clutched closely to the boy's chest. Her eyes gradually widened and her jaw tightened. She had just taken a step in preparation to drop down to the two when her gaze snapped towards the end of the alleyway, her head turning to center her vision on what she had began to sense.

No. Not now.

The shadows at the mouth of the alleyway writhed and congealed. Streaks of white tore through the inky mass of darkness to form several bony masks. Her hands balled into tight fists and wisps of violet reiatsu lashed out from her and cut away at the raindrops as they fell around her. Hollows. As if the dying individual below her wasn't enough to worry about, now she had to deal with these scavengers. As the Hollows fully formed and began their approach, slavering jaws craving for the potential meals before them, Angeni leapt down from the rooftop. Upon landing, a rush of her reiatsu surged out and collided with the small pack of Hollows, causing them to falter in their approach.

"Leave now. I don't want to destroy you, but I will if I have to." Her voice was even yet carried an authority which would hopefully add the necessary weight to her ultimatum. Truthfully, Angeni was unsure if she'd be able to route a group of Hollows this large on her own, at least not with her current strength. So just maybe the combination of her confidence and the display she had put on would be enough. As it turned out, it was.

The Hollows teetered in place for a moment, exchanging apprehensive glances amongst themselves with the occasional wary glance towards Angeni. After a few more moments of silent deliberation, the Hollows decided that perhaps there were easier meals elsewhere to be had. As the Hollows retreated back into the shadows, Angeni exhaled a breath of relief then quickly turned towards the pair laying on the ground. As she knelt beside them, her eyes quickly darted back and forth as she mentally assessed the male's condition first.

Multiple lacerations bilaterally to both upper and lower quadrants. Severe clavicular breaks in two places. Left upper arm avulsion. Both sets of biceps and triceps shredded. Through and through impalement sub-sternum. Advanced lividity and edema in multiple places...

"What or who did this to you?" She whispered quietly. She knew that there was far more than what she had seen from a cursory glance, but performing a full assessment right now would do more harm than good.

And then there was the girl...

Even without seeing the ashen and waxy quality of her skin, Angeni already knew. The girl no longer gave off a spiritual pressure. Even if she was merely unconscious from blood loss, Angeni would still be able to sense her presence in some capacity. Her spark was gone and as much as it saddened Angeni to admit it, there was nothing that she could do to save this girl. At the very least, Angeni could honor this nameless girl's memory by saving her friend. And so Angeni hoisted the male up over her shoulder then carefully picked up and cradled the young girl against her side. Even with Angeni's physical strength, it was easy to notice how little the girl weighed and how cold her forehead felt against Angeni's neck.

Poor thing...for someone so young to lose their life so soon...

She couldn't delay any further, however. The more time she took mourning, the less time that the man would have before succumbing to his injuries. Much quicker than when she had been making her way here, Angeni sprinted back towards her home, occasionally taking to the rooftops to bypass sluggish traffic or lingering people still hurrying towards shelter from the rain. After all, she was certain she would look more than a little suspicious carrying two severely injured people---one of which was dead already and the other who was on his way---and covered in blood. Within a short time she made it back to her home.

Taking only the absolute minimum amount of time to change her clothing and move the two into the spare bedroom which she had converted into a med-surg office, Angeni set to work treating the boy. She knew the difference between a spiritual being and a mortal being. As such, his treatment---given how extensively he was injured---required a combination of her healing abilities and the special surgical implements she had created specifically for treating spiritual beings. After nearly four hours of nonstop treatment, Angeni had finally managed to get him into a stable condition. She was exhausted, but there was still one more thing she needed to do...

Angeni turned a solemn gaze towards the deceased young girl that lay on the futon nearby. Approaching her and carefully cradling her, Angeni proceeded towards the bathroom where she first cleaned the girl's wounds and person, then clad her in a clean shirt and pair of shorts and moved her into her own bedroom. Tucking her carefully beneath the comforter, Angeni brushed aside a few strands of hair from the girl's forehead and placed a gentle kiss upon it.

"Rest now and be at peace." She whispered in a hushed and comforting tone. With monumental effort she tore her saddened gaze away from the girl and returned to the office where her companion lay resting. With a tired sigh, Angeni thudded down into her office chair behind her desk. Passing a cursory glance over the stacks of files on her desk, she gave another sigh as she set to work on the computer nearby, occasionally pausing to flip through a page or write something down. At the very least, the work needed to get done and it would keep her occupied as she waited for the man to awaken....if he awakened anytime soon.

The Reaper's Healer [Closed/Angeni] Empty Re: The Reaper's Healer [Closed/Angeni]

Post by Zenji Hatayama Thu Jun 18, 2020 7:10 am

Darkness surrounded the Shinigami, he floated in the void weightless and unburdened by the pains of flesh. Was it over? He could barely remember what had happened leading up to this moment. Zenji drifted for what felt like an age before he the memories slowly started to return.

“There was a Hollow… right?” he said aloud… or maybe he had simply thought it. Did he even have a mouth anymore? He couldn’t feel anything. Was this death? Did one simply float around, disembodied, waiting for the wheel to spin enough that they got spun back out again? He’d be a human this time right? Soul Society to World of the Living then back to the Soul Society excluding the chance of being consumed by the monsters of Hueco Mundo.

“Unless the Hollow finished me off. Did it consume me? Is that where I am?”

He closed his eyes, did he still have eyes? However it made no difference. He was already in a void of light anyway.

“Well it doesn’t matter anymore. Might as well just rest here.”

He was so very tired after all. Relaxing completely he could practically feel what little of his Spiritual Pressure was left dwindling to nothing. It didn’t matter. It over now, isn’t it?

“Talk about a pity party”

The voice, the same one from before, spoke in a tone of disgust.

Opening his eyes Zenji saw something in the darkness, vague, a mere outline but it appeared to be a person. A woman? “You....” he searched his memory. He’d already worked this one out hadn’t he? What was the answer? Oh right that was it. “You’re my Zanpakuto, right?”

“That’s right, slow and steady as always my dear Zenji.”

He should have been pleased. After centuries of waiting he had finally got what he wanted and yet a niggling concern was eating at him. “Why did you wait so long to speak with me?”

The following sigh echoed around the void filled with a mixture of sadness and frustration.

“I’ve been trying to speak with you since that first day we met at the Academy. It’s just taken you this long to listen to me.” There was a long pause before she continued, this time more softly, even gently. “You really picked a bad time to finally start listening.”

“Oh.” Zenji responded then pausing he continued in a genuinely regretful tone. “I’m sorry you were paired with such a useless partner. You never really got a chance to exist, did you?”

“Idiot. I am you. I’ve existed just as you have, I just would have preferred a bit more conversation.” she replied in a subdued tone before speaking more strongly. “Besides your time isn’t over yet.”

“Whatever do you mean? I’m dead… or eaten.”

“No you’re not, not yet anyway. Think.”

Zenji sighed, the act of thinking seemed so exhausting and he was so tired. The more he spoke the more exhausted he got. He could feel his Spiritual Power continuing to just flow away, if he just let it keep going he could sleep…

“ZENJI!” snapped the voice angrily. “Remember!”

Orange Spiritual Pressure began to surround the Soul Reaper, blocking out the abyss, it was warm and reassuring. At once he realised how stupid it had been to give in, how dangerous, and immediately he tried to get a hold of his Reiatsu. To hold it closely to himself. It was weak, thin but it was still there. He was still alive.

The memories struck him like a flood, washing over him and filling him. The patrol, the unexpectedly powerful Hollow, rushing to help Suki only to find her near death and the subsequent battle which had left him wounded and exhausted from over-casting due to expending far more Spiritual Energy that he was safely capable of managing.

“Well that explains the exhaustion.”

But he had got away in the end. Except… Suki! She had been so wounded, had he got her to safety?

“Zenji... began the Zanpakuto but Zenji waved her comment aside.

“It’s fine! I remember now.”

Pulling his Spiritual Pressure into himself, the small river of remaining power streaming through the inner channels of his body. It was like a shock and the darkness was banished to be replaced by blinding light.

Zenji blinked away the painful light which slowly came into focus to reveal a ceiling and not a familiar one. He tried to turn his head but could only manage a tiny movement. Pain and bone heavy wariness was pulsing through the Shinigami’s body.

“... hello...” It had meant to be a shout but it came out as a hoarse whisper. “... anybody...”

The Reaper's Healer [Closed/Angeni] Empty Re: The Reaper's Healer [Closed/Angeni]

Post by Angeni Thu Jun 18, 2020 3:23 pm

Even as she sat idling away at the paperwork in front of her, Angeni kept her spiritual senses closely trained on the recovering Shinigami that lay nearby. Truthfully speaking, it was the first time she had actually gotten the opportunity to use the special surgical tools. There was a fifty-fifty chance that the very act of using them on the boy would have killed him. They were designed to harness and channel spiritual energy to a meticulously precise degree, but there was no guarantee that they wouldn't have an adverse effect on the Shinigami. So naturally when they worked as intended, it had been a great relief to Angeni.

The act of healing him and operating on him had gone as well as it did due to equal parts her own capabilities and the boy's willpower to hold on. Or perhaps....perhaps it had not wholly been his own resolve, but rather a deeper part of him refusing to let him die. Although Angeni was familiar with Shinigami in a general sense, the intricacies were still something she was learning as time went on. She knew that they were souls, but their fundamental makeup was vastly different to that of mortal beings.

A faint rasp, something that barely qualified as a whisper, drifted from the Shinigami's lips. Angeni's gaze shifted away from the computer screen and settled on the Shinigami. Her chair creaked in response to her weight shifting forward to peer at the Shinigami. Had he spoken? Was he awaken? Her queries were answered with a second mutter from the Shinigami and a minute flutter of his eyelids as his eyes sluggishly slipped open.

"Oh, good, you're awake." She rose from her chair, picking up a tablet nearby as she approached him. There was a faint glow to her eyes as they swept back and forth along his body. Or perhaps it was a trick of the light. The boy likely would be unable to tell for sure. Every so often as she scanned him, she would pause to tap away at her tablet.

"Your spiritual power is recovering nicely. Slowly, but nicely all the same. You were pretty banged up when I found you. Can you tell me your name? Do you remember where you came from and what day it is?" Angeni held the tablet nestled under her arm as she gazed at him. He still seemed out of it, which was to be expected given the condition he had been in. She also knew that there was only a matter of time before he would want to know about the girl. Angeni clutched the tablet a little tighter and waited. That revelation would best be handled delicately and little by little.

The Reaper's Healer [Closed/Angeni] Empty Re: The Reaper's Healer [Closed/Angeni]

The Shinigami tried to sit up at the sound of the voice but the slightest movement sent agony trembling through his body, besides he was still too exhausted to move. Frowning he looked at the woman before him. She looked like no Shinigami of the Third he’d ever seen but perhaps they had to call someone in from off duty to check in on him.

Had he really been in that bad a state? Or maybe it was just panic at losing the Head of the Hatayama Clan to a mere Hollow that had forced them to summon someone skilled for the job.

He frowned “That doesn’t make sense.” he thought to himself. Something she had said didn’t add up to being a Kaido expert of the Third and the room didn’t look like…

A flash of pain caused the man to grimace and lose his train of thought. Hearing the words he squirted at the woman next to him and tried to focus on her once more. She was a rather attractive looking lady, so much so that he was sure that if he’d seen her around the Gotei before he would recall her. His mouth opened to respond but no words came out, instead he was overcome by a sudden coughing fit, with every minor convulsion he felt new pain coarse through every fibre of his being.

When Zenji finally stopped coughing, he found himself gasping for breath as if he’d just come out of a long sprint. Once he’d finally regained his breath he spoke slowly, almost delicately, in an attempt to respond to the woman. “Z-Zenji. Of… of the” he paused to take another few deep breaths before continuing. “...Hatayama Clan… The… the Estate will need to be ma… made aware that I am here.”

They should have known all of this. He wasn’t sure why she was asking these questions. He stayed silent for a little while, practically spent, but soon he found his strength returning and feeling a little more up to the task of speaking than he had been before. “A patrol… high concentration of Hollow incursion in the World of the Living...” he trailed off with a shuddering breath as dark spots danced across his vision.

Fighting to refocus his sight he abandoned trying to answer her questions for now, in fact he couldn’t even really recall what she had asked him. “Sorry… what was that?” he asked in mild confusion before adding “Is this the Third? Are you an officer here.”

The Reaper's Healer [Closed/Angeni] Empty Re: The Reaper's Healer [Closed/Angeni]

Angeni narrowed with clinical intent as the harsh coughing fit began. The cast a thoughtful glance towards an oxygen tank nearby, one that sat separate from the others. Whereas the cluster of tanks held regular oxygen, the singular one contained oxygen that had been infused with reishi. Like the surgical implements, this had been made specifically with the intent of treating spiritual beings in mind. If necessary, she could place him on a breathing treatment. A cannula, maybe? No, judging by the severity of his cough, he would probably need an NRB mask.

Her eyes narrowed again as his coughing tapered off and her gradually stabilized. She nodded evenly, remaining silent and keeping her gaze locked on the tablet in her hand as he spoke. The way he spoke of his family and how he referred to himself, it seemed that this Zenji was either a member of royalty or someone of high esteem wherever it was that Shinigami went when they weren't in the mortal world. Or perhaps, they stayed on the mortal world, just on a plane of existence unknown to mortals such as herself.

"A Hollow attack...I see. Well, you're rather brave to try to fight them all alone. Either that, or you have a death wish; it's a fifty-fifty shot at this point." Angeni mused, sparing him a teasing grin before looking back at her tablet. Her grin shifted into a curious frown when he mentioned somewhere called "The Third." What was there three of? Needless to say, the question had intrigued her. Regardless, she shook her head in response to him.

"I'm not sure what this "Third" is you're talking about, but you're in the mortal world. I found you practically dead in an alleyway a few hours ago. Try not to move too much, you had some serious injuries and if you put too much strain on yourself you'll just open them back up." For a split second she had almost mentioned the girl that she had found with him, but luckily she had caught herself and omitted the information.

"Just relax for now, your spiritual energy levels are still too low for you to even entertain the thought of getting up and moving around."

The Reaper's Healer [Closed/Angeni] Empty Re: The Reaper's Healer [Closed/Angeni]

“Brave?” he asked softly followed by a bitter laugh filled with pain, and not just physical agony, at the thought. No he hadn’t been brave. He’d been terrified the entire time and, in the end, utterly not up to the task. “It’s our duty… there was little else we could do.”

Trying to get some feeling back in his limbs he slowly worked his hands, flexing his fingers, while slowly doing the same with his feet. However as he did so he felt stiffness in his left hand, making it difficult to open, frowning he glanced over and saw his knuckles were white in a death grip around a very familiar object. The sight of the shakujō shaped Zanpakuto filled the Shinigami with relief, in fact simply looking at it seemed to grant him a steady flow of strength. Loosening his grasp he sighed in relief after the initial pain of the locked grip had passed.

Listening to the woman he accepted her warning against moving but something else she said didn’t make sense. His mind was moving slowly, frustratingly so, as it felt like he was trying to put together a puzzle where some of the pieces had been damaged.

‘She doesn’t know what the Gotei is…’

The realisation struck him like a hammer.

“You’re a mortal. A Human.” he stated his shock obvious “But… how? You can see me.” More than that she had been able to heal him despite his non-physical form, at least not physical in this Realm, so what was she?

The Reaper's Healer [Closed/Angeni] Empty Re: The Reaper's Healer [Closed/Angeni]

Post by Angeni Fri Jun 19, 2020 3:19 pm

A quick chortle, amused in nature yet bordering on derisive, escaped her lips at his expression of shock over her disposition. Just as it seemed that Angeni didn't have a complete knowledge of Shinigami, apparently Shinigami didn't have a complete knowledge of mortals. Or at the very least, were unaware that they had began to develop spiritual abilities over the past....actually, she was unsure when mortals had first undergone their spiritual awakening. Maybe she would do some research in order to find out. In the meantime...

"Yes, I'm a human, glad to see you worked that out on your own." She chuckled without looking away from her tablet. There was a brief moment of silence, broken intermittently by the faint tap of her finger on the tablet screen, before she once more tucked the tablet beneath her arm and looked at him.

"And I can see you because, well, I'm not exactly what you'd call a "normal" human. I guess you could say I'm...gifted." She added then set the tablet down on her desk. Her brow furrowed, a considering gaze turned on the prone Shinigami. Although he seemed to be recovering at a steady rate, there was still the matter of informing him that his companion had not survived. Knowing what she knew about both people and her medical knowledge, she knew that traumatic news often had an adverse effect on people in recovery. And judging by how he had been holding the girl when she found them, it was a safe assumption that she was very important to him.

"Honestly, a part of me was worried I wouldn't be able to heal you..." She picked up a nearby surgical tray that held the customized implements and presented it for Zenji to see.

"It took a lot of trial and error and figuring out, but I made these for treating spiritual beings like you. They look like normal surgery tools, right? Well, there's one special difference; these are able to harness and channel spiritual energy. A lot of the first sets I made ended up blowing up. Thankfully I have healing abilities of my own. I really only need them when the person I'm treating has really serious injuries. Eventually my healing will be stronger and I won't need to use them as much, but for now they do the job." She set the tray aside and cast another thoughtful stare at Zenji. Eventually he would find out that the girl was dead, and at that eventual time Zenji wouldn't be her patient. But the fact remained that Zenji presently was her patient, and so she felt she had an obligation to inform him.

"There is...one other thing, though. It's about the girl that was with you..." Angeni sighed, pulling one of the nearby chairs over and sitting down then crossing her legs.

"I'm sorry to tell you this, but...she didn't make it. Judging by the condition of her injuries when I found you two, I'd guess that she passed maybe an hour or two before you ended up in that alleyway. If...if you'd like to see her, she's in my bedroom. I can take you to her when you're ready, but I think you should try to rest a bit first."

The Reaper's Healer [Closed/Angeni] Empty Re: The Reaper's Healer [Closed/Angeni]

Post by Zenji Hatayama Fri Jun 19, 2020 6:00 pm

“Huh...” Zenji responded somewhat dumbly, he didn’t know such Humans even existed. There were the Quincy of course, but they were long dead, which he only knew about due to the studying of the older Clan histories stored in the archives.

“So you’re just going to lie there like an ungrateful moron? I thought the nobility were taught a modicum of grace. Human or not she did save you after all.”

Coughing the man tried to sit up, to bow towards the healer, but the movement only caused a gasp of pain and a muffled curse before he realised his mistake and relaxed into his pillow. “Ah damn… uhm, I mean..” clearing his throat he continued “Thank you m’am.” he said politely before forcing a smile despite how tired he felt.

“You certainly did a great job, I can’t imagine our own healers doing a much better job.” he complimented while he ran his eyes over the unfamiliar items. The Soul Reaper had never been much for first aid, the closest he got was the use of Kaidō but even then he wasn’t very good at it despite his best efforts.

He closed his eyes and relaxed. This was frankly paradise after what he’d gone through, he’d been lucky to survive and he thanked whatever power was watching over him for their aid. Maybe the Soul King himself had helped nudge the dice of fate so that he would come out a winner for once.

Well maybe not the winner but at least not the loser.

The blissful feeling began to fade as he realised he was forgetting something.

‘Suki!’

Turning to ask the woman where his colleague was and if she had awoken from her injuries yet the man was a moment to slow as Angeni, having pulled up a chair, instead told him the truth. That she was dead. Worst she had been dead for a while before she’d even found him? How long had there been between then and the fight? Had she really been dead all that time? Had he failed to save her after everything? Had the entire struggle against that monster been for nothing?

Zenji’s spiritual pressure began to build, and build, the Reaper losing control as his emotions grew even wilder and the strength of his Reiatsu escalating in line with the confusing mixture of feelings flooding through him. As it spread it would soon become detectable to half the hungry Hollow of the small City.

He pushed himself upright, ignored the pain and no doubt the damage he did to himself, as he tried to maneuver himself into a position where he could step away from the table with Staff in hand ready to use it if needed. “Where is she?”

The Reaper's Healer [Closed/Angeni] Empty Re: The Reaper's Healer [Closed/Angeni]

Post by Angeni Tue Jun 23, 2020 9:50 pm

His reaction was more or less what she had expected it to be. Her expression softened and a faint sigh whispered from her lips as she watched his face contort first with the pain of his stressed injuries then with the realization that his companion had died long before he had even realized. What must something like that feel like? To carry a loved one hoping beyond hope that you can get them to safety and get them help, only to have those hopes shattered. She disliked that she had to be the one to tell him, but she was also relieved that he was at least in the presence of someone who could help him deal with the loss....at least from a clinical therapy standpoint.

The corner of her lips twitched downward into a brief grimace and she shot a glance towards the medicine locker nearby. She understood his pain and frustration, but if he continued letting his spiritual pressure build unchecked, they would no doubt have every Hollow within a few miles tearing into her house to get to him. There were several options in there that she could use to calm him down, there was even the other tank situated nearby. It was of similar size and base design as the oxygen tanks, but this one was labeled with the chemical composition for its contents with a blue "R" behind it; it was reishi-infused nitrous oxide. She would sedate him if she needed to, but a part of her told her that just speaking to him would yield much better results.

"You need to calm down, if you keep letting off spiritual energy so haphazardly you'll bring every Hollow in Karakura here. You're in no condition to fight, you're barely in any condition to be speaking. I get that you want to see her, but right now you're making things worse." Angeni rose from her chair and her demeanor seemed to shift. There was less open sympathy in her tone, rather it had been replaced by a clinical neutrality; it was as if she had gone from a kind Good Samaritan to a stern medical professional. Her gaze swept over him from head to toe, performing a silent assessment of his condition. After another moment of consideration, reluctant resignation settled in her expression.

"Follow me, and keep your energy in check. If I need to sedate you, I'll do it." She warned as she waited for him to stand up. When it was obvious that he would need assistance, Angeni stepped to his side opposite of the staff and hooked her arm around his waist to provide additional support as they slowly made their way towards the room where Zenji's companion currently lay. Just outside the doorway of the bedroom, Angeni stepped away from Zenji and approached the door. With the solemnity of one who had performed this procession one too many times, Angeni turned the knob and stepped aside.

"Take as much time as you need. When you're ready, I'll be sitting out here in the hall waiting." Angeni gave a quick nod and at once her previous kindness returned. She flashed him a sympathetic smile before closing the door behind her and leaving Zenji to grieve.

Dark eyes flickered with orange power as his Spiritual Pressure exerted it’s physical weight on the area as he met the woman’s own gaze. For a moment reason had no place in those eyes as the troubled Soul failed to truly comprehend his situation. His mind moved slowly and it was only the woman’s cooling, and strict, tone that helped bring an element of sense back to the Shinigami.

“There’s no point hurting yourself besides why earn the ire of such a useful ally?”

Angeni’s tone alongside the calm observation of his Zanpakuto Spirit saved Zenji. He suddenly realised how much his precious little Reiryoku he was wasting on what amounted to an emotional tantrum.

Breath in. Breath out.

The mantra of the anxious man.

The fury and the hurt alongside what other madness has possessed Zenji had vanished from his expression to be replaced by a simple, exhausted and injured man too weak to even walk alone.

“You’re right, I’m sorry doctor.” he said, his shame leaking into his voice. That would have been a wonderful way to repay the mortals kind efforts, to draw monsters to her very place of healing. Not only would he endanger the good woman but if she was to come to harm how many others would his selfishness deprive of future help? “Sedation shall not be necessary.” he added. He had no idea what sort of chemicals a mortal had that could put a Death God to sleep but he didn’t want to test it. Besides he’d been enough trouble so far.

The fluctuating Spiritual Pressure began to weaken, the orange aura of energy receding back into the fragile looking man, and after a few moments all that was left was the faint scent of the kin-mokusei flower.

Now that he was back to his normal self Zenji couldn’t help but grimace at the pain shooting through his body. The agony of having forced himself to sit up so swiftly, or really at all, was now striking back with a vengeance.

“Genius move.”

Breathing heavily, Zenji leant heavily on his staff as he forced himself to his feet and appeared openly thankful for the woman’s support once it was offered. As she guided him through the building Zenji glanced at her sideways and smiled softly. “I feel quite terrible but I don’t believe I caught your name.” he added, maybe she had told him however it must have been before his mind truly woke up as he couldn’t summon it at all. He felt quite terrible of course, it was inexcusable to not know the identity of his rescuer.

When they finally reached a door Angeni opened it for him but she herself did not venture into the next room and instead allowed Zenji to go forth alone. The man took a deep, somewhat ragged, breath and with a miserable nod to the mortal he stepped past her and into the darkened room.

Upon the bed, as if asleep, lay the small form of Suki. Clearly she had been cleaned up as best as was able considering her grievous wounds for she looked almost as if she were asleep. Seeing a simple chair against one wall the Soul Reaper grabbed it and dragged it across the floor, using what little strength he had available to him, and sat down next to the bed. Putting his staff aside he leant it against the wall before turning his attention to the source of his current pain, more cutting than any wound.

He looked at the young still woman. Short, slight and appearing to be barely out of her teens the Shinigami had been a recent graduate of the Academy. She had been a fresh recruit of the Fifth and Zenji had barely known her at all, paying the young woman only minimum attention during the start of their patrol despite her exuberant friendliness. He recalled some of the facts the warm young woman had shared with him about her family in the Rukongai, about how much she’d loved the academy and how she hoped one day to rise high in the Fifth based on nothing but hard work as she’d joked about being rather talentless. This patrol had been one of her first, certainly the first that had led to direct conflict with a powerful Hollow and now it was her last.

If only he had stayed with her instead of dismissing her overexcitable nature as a mere annoyance.
If only he had insisted she stay with him instead of running ahead.
If only he had been faster.
If only he had been stronger.
If only he’d studied Kaido instead of Hado and Bakudo.
If only it had been him instead of her.
If only.
If only.
If only.

Within his mind he could sense his Zanpakuto spirit withdraw into whatever secret place it dwelled. Leaving the Soul Reaper alone to his grief.

Zenji gently cupped her cold, pale, hand in his own as the tears ran down his face unheeded. “I’m sorry… I’m so sorry Suki.” he whispered, his voice cracking from grief as he mourned this poor child  whom he had barely known. “This is my fault… you fought bravely to protect the Balance. You were everything the Gotei could wish for in a soldier. You were kind, strong and devoted. I am the one who failed… not you. So go forward with no regrets, move forwards to whatever new adventure awaits you.”

Keeping ahold of her hand with one of his own he leant forward to hold the other above her head. Closing his eyes he let his Spiritual Pressure flow outwards but this time it was controlled, a warm breeze washed around the still form of Suki, while she was enveloped in an orange glow and the smell of fresh flowers filled the air. “Suki Furukawa, you have given your life for the most important duty any being can hope to serve. You are not free from the concerns of duty. Feel no grief. Feel no regret. May the Soul King guide you to your next destination. The wheel will turn, the balance will be retained and may you be spun out to live anew in happiness, peace and prosperity as rewards for your noble sacrifice.”

The benediction of the dead came easily to his lips for he was the Lord of the Hatayama, Noble Monks of the Soul Society, Keepers of the Balance and honoured servants to the Soul King.

His Spiritual energies receded and Zenji stood looking down at the girl, his face still wet from tears as he gave a sad smile. “I am an old joke my friend.” he said softly. “I have dwelt in the background for a Century. I am no soldier, no warrior… no true Shinigami. I was unprepared for what we faced. I couldn’t save you.”

He took a deep breath shakily. “I promise you I won’t let this loss mean nothing. I will change. I will be better. I will try to be the Soul Reaper you showed yourself to be in such a short period of time. I’ll grow, I’ll stop being afraid of the World around me and start living outside my Estate, my library and my office. I promise.” he told her gently. “And when I am stronger, when I am better, I will find the beast that did this and make sure it never hurts anyone again. Not for revenge, not for anger but to put to rest the poor souls that dwell within it’s tortured form.”

The nobleman smiled. “You mentioned a family. I will search for them and give the Furukawa Family any support I can.”

Straightening up he wiped away his tears. “I will return shortly to bring you home.”

Grabbing his staff he forced himself to his feet. Zenji strode to the door and opened it slowly, stepped back out into the hallway, and nodded to the mortal spiritualist. “Thank you. For everything.”

The Reaper's Healer [Closed/Angeni] Empty Re: The Reaper's Healer [Closed/Angeni]

As Angeni sat waiting outside of the room, her index finger idly slipped back and forth along the screen of her tablet. At some point shortly after Zenji had entered the room, she had returned to her office to retrieve it. Exactly what was on the tablet became clear with the intent present on her face as she stared down at it; it was anatomical data she had gathered during the process of treating Zenji's injuries. Detailed readings of his spiritual composition, of Shinigami composition, shifted back and forth between multiple tabs as Angeni swiped.

Overall, it seemed that their makeup was similar at a base level to humans, yet there was no trace of the physical elements that composed human bodies. From what the data read, their natural composition was entirely composed of reishi and, at a deeper level, Reiryoku.

"So reishi makes up their bodies...and this other energy that's mingled with it is their soul energy. I wonder if they have a special name for it..." She muttered distantly as she continued to scroll. Going through the information actually served dual purposes. The first was that it nurtured her curious nature and informed her of something she had wanted to know about. The second reason, unfortunately, was much more solemn; it distracted her from what transpired in the room a short distance away from her. Despite her career having only just started a few years prior, this wasn't the first time she had been responsible for passing on the notice of a loved one's death to their family members. She had, in fact, been on both sides of the conversation, so she understood better than anyone how it felt for the one receiving the grim tidings and the one relaying them.

"One part of the job that I actually hate." She uttered a low sigh, briefly halting her scrolling in a pensive moment. It would have extended further had it not been interrupted by the sound of the door opening. Angeni looked up from the tablet and set it down on her lap as she met Zenji's gaze. When he expressed his gratitude for her help, Angeni smiled and shook her head as she stood up.

"Honestly I don't mind, I'm just glad I was able to help at least one of you. I'm...I'm sorry about your friend, I can tell you really cared for her. You're welcome to rest here as long as you need to, just...maybe not tell everyone about it? I'm still working out the legalities of having a private practice in my home that can treat ghost people." She chuckled then waved, turning and making her way back to her office. She groaned tiredly as she settled back into her chair behind her office's desk. The tips of her fingers massaged at her temples to stave off the headache that threatened to bloom before she once more set to work on the paperwork in front of her. The work of a healer never ceased, it seemed.

The Reaper's Healer [Closed/Angeni] Empty Re: The Reaper's Healer [Closed/Angeni]

Zenji smiled at her comment giving a soft chuckle, although it was a little strained sounding, and he took out what appeared to be a small flip phone. Talking quietly to whomever was on the other end the Shinigami soon put the device away.

Walking to the door of her office he nodded to the woman. “Thank you again for everything that you’ve done for me and… everything you tried to do for my friend.” he said with genuine, if tired, warmth. “I shall be returning to our realm now. I do hope next time we meet it is under more pleasant circumstances.”

Pausing he added. “I will do my best to keep your existence… quiet.” he promised. He was too exhausted to explain the necessary reporting processing, the reviews and the likely follow up queries from his superiors about an actively spiritual mortal that had the power to even repair their bodies consisting of spirit particles.

Suddenly his phone-like device beeped and Zenji took it out to quickly look at the screen and nod. Bowing to her again he nodded. “We shall be returning home now.”

Stepping back into the room where the corpse had been lain, leaving the door open as he didn’t even consider hiding what was about to happen from the lady who had saved his life

Holding his staff in two hands he thrust it, tip first, into the air before him and turned it slowly. The air around the head of the weapon rippled and twisted in response to the Death God’s authority. “Open.” he commanded. The warping air formed a japanese style door which slid open revealing pure white light beyond. The Jigokuchō he’d requested fluttered through the summoned doorway.

Turning Zenji carefully picked up the still form of his fallen comrade.

“Time to go home.”

Stepping through the Senkaimon Zenji vanished from the Human Realm and entered the Soul Society with the portal closing behind him.
