Common Grounds
Seireitei
Soul Society

---------------------

‘Not all those who wander are lost,’ but Reika certainly fell into the lost category. They had turned her free from the academy, cut loose like a child from their mother’s apron strings without a word - or the young shinigami hadn’t been paying attention again, lost in her own daydreams. Either way, Reika was feeling a pang of anxiety as she wandered the grounds of the Seireitei in hopes of figuring out what in the world to do next.

In the past, not paying attention definitely had caused what would be self-described as a minor issue, that was corrected by scrambling or through the help of family; This time Reika was completely alone in her own mess. Surely it could be easy to fix, right? The young shinigami chewed on the edge of her right thumbnail out of nervous habit as cerulean blue eyes darted side to side, glancing at the mass of large buildings that adorned the landscape.

“Oh… yay.” A defeated tone murmured from behind taunt lips as her shoulders slumped forward.

At this rate, it was a random chance of which buildi- division should be chosen. The thought hadn’t even accord as to which one would be the right fit. This was all an unknown. “I should have paid more attention in the academy.” An exasperated sigh left Reika, her right palm pressed lightly to her face, shaking her head in self-defeat. What skills did the shinigami possess that would even catch the eye of one of the divisions? Sure, swinging a sword was something, but anyone could do that, right?

Through all Reika's years, she had been told the tales of the six divisions. From the swift justice delivered by the mighty fifth to the... pencil pushers of the first. Decisions, decisions. Dwelling in thought served no purpose at this point! It was time to figure it out on her own.

The sun was beginning to crest high in the sky as an exasperated Reika entered into the 1st Division’s grounds. It had taken her all morning for her to find her way here, surely it couldn’t get worse. Frustration weighed heavy on the brow of this once lost shinigami. Despite everything she tried, the young shinigami arrived at the pencil pushers first - much to her disdain.

"Great..." Looking around the grounds, Reika attempted to find someone to talk to.

All that glitters is not gold [Zenji/closed] Empty Re: All that glitters is not gold [Zenji/closed]

Things had not been going well lately for Zenji. First he had been struggling with the realisation that he simply wasn’t good enough to be a Shinigami, then had come the increased intermingling with his fellow Nobles some of which had been pleasant enough and some had been decidedly not. Then, of course, came the patrol that nearly got him killed and where he had lost…

A muttered curse slipped from his lips at the memory. He’d finally decided to buckle down, to try and get himself up to what could be considered a respectable level for a Shinigami even if not very impressive for one of his age or supposed experience. He’d even bitten the bullet and actually begun to use the Division Training Grounds despite the embarrassment he felt at getting his ass kicked by fresh recruits.

‘Suck it up big boy. If you hadn’t lazed around for all those years this wouldn’t be necessary now, would it?’ came the femine voice that he had come to realise was his Zanpakuto. In retrospect he wondered if all those silent reprimands he’d give himself over the years had been her all along? ‘Perhaps…’ she provided playfully. Now that he could hear her voice she didn’t seem to be wanting to go back to being quiet ever again.

Wonderful.

After an hour of getting smacked about by Shinigami a fraction of his age Zenji had moved on to training that he was far, far, more comfortable with. Out in one of the large courtyards which had been set aside for Kidō practice. At the moment he was the only one present, not entirely surprising as it seemed that interest in the Demon Arts paled in comparison to learning how to swing a sword faster and harder. ‘That’s an unfair description. Just because you suck at it.’

Yeah she definitely wasn’t going to be shutting up any time soon.

Zenji took up position at the firing line and with a deep breath he let his Spiritual Aura flow freely around him, unrestricted but still controlled, while he focused on the targets before him. Holding a palm out before him he half-closed his eyes.

“Sprinkled on the bones of the beast! Sharp tower, red crystal, steel ring. Move and become the wind, stop and become the calm. The sound of warring spears fills the empty castle! Hadō #63. Raikōhō!” the blast of yellow energy shot forth like a lightning bolt. Zenji had aimed for the largest of the available targets. The spell struck true and the resulting explosion kicked up enough dust to momentarily obscure the entire practice range before settling down to show the target had been utterly eradicated.

Zenji put his hands on his knees to catch his breath. At least it had worked. He had the skill for these higher level spells it appeared but just not the Spiritual stamina. The orange Spiritual Aura flickered around him wildly for a moment before dying down.

Straightening up he wiped some sweat from his brow. Glancing over his shoulder past the exit from the courtyard into the HQ grounds proper he noticed a single figure. She was a Shinigami although from her constant glancing around she didn’t seem to be sure of her current location.

Feeling like he needed a breather, as well as a general sense of duty towards someone who looked so confused, Zenji walked over towards her. As he approached he raised a hand in greetings. Up close the Shinigami definitely didn’t recognise her and wondered which Division she was from. It was times like this that he really wished that they had badges or something to indicate where the hell they worked. “Good afternoon, I’m Zenji. Are you looking for someone? I might be able to help.” he offered politely.

All that glitters is not gold [Zenji/closed] Empty Re: All that glitters is not gold [Zenji/closed]

Post by Reika Suzumei Tue Jun 16, 2020 12:15 pm

The courtyard seemed bare, save for a few meandering shinigami who looked far too busy with their daily duties. Reika was just a nobody within the Soul Society, the uneasiness at the thought of even bothering them rolled over her body like a wave of anxiety. There wasn’t a reason for the youth to feel as such. Perhaps it was just first day jitters - yes, definitely that.

Maybe going inside the compound would be an easier task. There might actually be someone she could talk to and put her at ease. This was the pencil-pushing division after all. If this apprehension from speaking to someone here was this bad, going to the other divisions was going to be far worse. Steeling herself, Reika readied to start her trek toward the compound. “The first step is always the hardest.”

The trail of thoughts was suddenly interrupted by the voice of an unknown man. Reika was slightly startled, she had been lost in her own head and didn’t even realize someone was even approaching her and he was even offering to help! What luck. A sigh of relief escaped the young shinigami’s lips, her head dipping forward, right palm pressing to her chest, then falling to her side as she looked at him.

“Thank goodness!” Reika said with a cheery smile. “I’m Reika. I’ve been trying to find each of the divisions’ compounds. I… uh, just finished the academy not too long ago,” She said sheepishly, “and was hoping to see which division was the right fit for me. Could you help someone who managed to get lost out? Cause obviously I’m a… lost cause.”

Bad jokes and puns, a defense mechanism Reika. It helped ease her and on occasion, cause other people to laugh. This might be the most appropriate time, but the verbal spewage seemed automatic. Hopefully, that wouldn’t be too off-putting for the first person she met outside of the academy. She could already feel herself mentally being kicked for such a quip and her body language showed it as the youth squirmed slightly in place.

All that glitters is not gold [Zenji/closed] Empty Re: All that glitters is not gold [Zenji/closed]

Zenji smiled kindly, or as kindly as his naturally stern expression could manage, while she spoke and when she was finished his eyebrows were raised slightly in vague surprise. Seeing the young woman’s obvious discomfort he gave a subdued chuckle. “Well I’m sure that’s not true. You did graduate after all.” he responded gently before glancing towards the Divisional Headquarters. “I am free right now, I was only occupying myself with some basic training, so I will strive to be an adequate guide.”

Folding one hand behind his back, the other still holding his staff, he gestured for her to follow while leading her towards the main entrance of their division. “You said you are a recent graduate of the Academy?” he asked, his staff jingling softly as the rings shook slightly with each step the Shinigami took. “Have you any preferences for which Division you hope will accept your application?” he asked. Many recruits got their preferential choices but just as many got stuck into a section they were far less pleased with. The administrative wing of the First Division was packed with such dissatisfied souls.

“Are you interested in Administration Duties or Leadership Responsibilities?” he queried. Such things happened frequently. Young rookies wanting to prove themselves able leaders as a quick pass to gaining seated positions as well as some fresh graduates who simply wanted less combat intensive duties and thought the admin branch of the Gotei was the best way to achieve this. Then, of course, came the aspect of prestige that one received by being affiliated with the First Division of the Gotei 6. “Or are we simply a cursory stop on the way to the Division that truly interests you?” he added with a smirk and in good humour. Zenji himself felt no great need to defend his Division, hell he hadn’t even requested admission himself and had been transferred from the third years ago by a supervisor who probably had just wanted rid of him.

All that glitters is not gold [Zenji/closed] Empty Re: All that glitters is not gold [Zenji/closed]

Post by Reika Suzumei Wed Jun 17, 2020 12:50 pm

Reika listened to Zenji as he talked; he spoke about training and offered to be a guide for her. So it seemed at least one person in the 1st division trained, perhaps more did. Maybe it was time to put aside such misconceived notions of the whole division being nothing but pencil pushers. That would have to come in time though, especially after a tour of the Headquarters. As the man gestured forward, Reika followed with tepid steps. This place was an unknown, maybe this tour was going to be as boring as a history lesson.

Listening to the soft jingle of the Shinigami’s staff, Reika nearly missed the question asked. Instinctively she replied, “Huh? Oh, yes. I’ve only recently been released… but I wasn’t exactly chosen by any division.” A timid laugh escaped her lips, “I don’t have a preference for any of the divisions. I just managed to find myself here; barely at that.”

That was a hard truth to admit. “I…” Her sentence trailed as they neared the entrance, it looming over her as if it was some impending doom about to take her life. “Got lost and ended up at the first, well, first. I was hoping to get a feel for all of them. That way the choice might be easier.” Looking to Zenji, Reika flashed a weak as she scratched the back of her head with unease. “I’m honestly just looking for a division that’ll help me with kido.”

Administration duties and leadership responsibilities weren’t even on her radar. “I want to improve myself so I can prove to my family I was worth all the trouble I caused when I was younger. It doesn’t matter which division can offer it, I just want to be better.” That last sentence left her meekly as Reika pensively twiddled her thumbs, looking down to them as thoughts of what she needed to do crossed through her.

All that glitters is not gold [Zenji/closed] Empty Re: All that glitters is not gold [Zenji/closed]

Post by Zenji Hatayama Wed Jun 17, 2020 2:15 pm

“Neither did I.” Zenji admitted with a smile as his mind dredged up Century Old memories. His own joining the Gotei had not been very smooth and, frankly, he was lucky they took him at all. His training had been so long before that the only division willing to take him had been the Third for “support” which largely meant paperwork and the odd bit of utility Kidō. Still one wasn’t married to their Division and chances to transfer came around every decade or two.

He chuckled and gestured to the area around them. “I wouldn’t worry too much about finding this place hard to navigate. Considering the original buildings were constructed thousands of years ago and expansion has happened all willy nilly since then I suppose we should be thankful for any resemblance of order they’ve managed to maintain.” he said with a chuckle. Much of the Seireitei felt like a maze of narrow streets surrounded by high walls. Trying to find one’s way without practice could be a true test of patience. Probably why so many higher ranked Shinigami simply choose to go over the walls rather than going this way and that to get to a relatively close destination.

“You’ll get used to it.”

At the mention of Kido the man smiled. “Ah the Demon Arts.”  he said with a smile and something approaching passion entering his voice. “I suppose the Third is your best bet but really they only specialise in the Healing Arts. I suppose the Sixth might have a few masters of the Binding Arts because they have to restrain and capture potentially powerful opponents.”  he suggested while scratching his chin.

Ever since his encounter with the Hollow and his redoubling of his own training the Shinigami had begun to wonder if perhaps the Gotei should centralise such knowledge. His own Clan was a reservoir of Mystical Knowledge as was a number of other Families. What if they pooled their knowledge and skills into another group, not a Division exactly but a smaller group of specialists. It could be fascinating, could it not?

Still Zenji had a long way to go before even suggesting such a thing to the people that mattered.

“Still you will find all Divisions carry experts in all areas. The First is the most diverse in my experience with masteries ranging from Zanjutsu to the Mystical Arts.” he told the young girl with a smile. “You’re right not to put too much weight on Division. You can always transfer at a later date or, you might find, a superior believes you’re more suited to another position in a different Squad.”

Reaching the main entrance Zenji gestured with his staff for the woman to follow and entered the huge Divisional entrance hall. Walking over to the reception desk Zenji had a quick talk with the receptionist while pointing towards Reika with his Staff. The receptionist vanished for a few minutes before returning.

Zenji walked towards Reika with a small ID Card which had her picture and name on it, likely taken from the Academy records and handed it to her. “Here you go. You’re unlikely to have any issues really but you never know when you’ll come across a power hungry security patrol.” Waiting for her to pin it on he raised an eyebrow. “So where to first?”

All that glitters is not gold [Zenji/closed] Empty Re: All that glitters is not gold [Zenji/closed]

Post by Reika Suzumei Thu Jun 18, 2020 1:45 am

As Zenji talked, there was a bit of relief. The admittance of not knowing which division seemed the right fit was rather reassuring. Back in the academy, the shinigami that came to demonstrate skills and talk to the students about life in the Gotei always seemed so self-assured individuals, almost as if they could take on the world. Now, standing before her was a shinigami sharing that he was indecisive about which was the right fit. Perhaps many others shared the same feeling.

This shinigami seemed to be telling her everything she needed to hear. Navigating through the Seireitei was a veritable nightmare. Having spent hours just trying to find one compound without ending up down some dead-end alley was horrible. Reika had to make a mental note to hopefully find a map or start going over walls… without breaking her neck in the attempt.

At least through all this small chattering, there was good news: all divisions could help in a variety of training, and transferring to another was always an option. “That’s good news! That’ll make choosing so much easier.” She replied as they continued on their path into the Divisional headquarters.

Before she knew it, Reika was handed an ID card with her picture and name on it and Zenji was talking about ‘power-hungry’ security. The young shinigami raised her left brow at the card and the sudden question of ‘where to first?’. First of all, why is there power-hungry security? Second of all, how was she supposed to even know where to go? Reika didn’t even know how she had managed to find herself at the First Division’s Headquarters!

Pinning the ID to her uniform, Reika furrowed her brow and rubbed her hands over her face as she tried to come up with an idea of where to even go on this guided tour. Hands resting on her face, she spread her index fingers asides, cerulean eyes looking at Zenji between her index and middle fingers. “I… have no idea.” She murmured, voice muffled by her hands.

Hands dropped for a brief moment before rising in a dramatic shrug, head bobbing slightly from side to side as she tried to come up with something. “I don’t know what this place even has!” Hoping not to be misconstrued as an imbecile, Reika suddenly blurted out, “Training grounds? Yes!” She said in a chipper tone. “Training grounds; You said you were training earlier. How about a quick tour there and… wherever after you feel like I need to see”

Yeah, this was a fail in Reika’s book. Normally she’d be able to pull something out of her hat in order to react to a situation, but, this seemed to have left her flabbergasted. There was no way to even blame it on daydreaming. “S-sorry. It’s been a long, yet short day. I think my frustration has gotten the better of me for not knowing exactly what to do. Let’s… get that tour started before I stick my foot further into my mouth.” A sheepish grin briefly appeared. “Lead the way.”

All that glitters is not gold [Zenji/closed] Empty Re: All that glitters is not gold [Zenji/closed]

Post by Zenji Hatayama Thu Jun 18, 2020 5:52 am

The Senior Soul Reaper chuckled pleasantly. “Many new graduates put a great deal of weight on which Division they believe they should end up in but it’s often not that important unless one has a particularly strong feeling towards a certain Division or, in some cases, wishing to serve under a certain Officer.” Zenji paused then added. “And, of course, you can always request assignment be handled by those higher up the chain of command within the Gotei. They’ll check your Academy records, current vacancies and make their decision based on these factors.”

Zenji listened to the woman trip over herself verbally with some bemusement. He could remember being that nervous new recruit all those years ago. ‘By the Soul King, I’m old.’

“Yup!”

Momentarily frowning at the quick, unasked for, agreement Zenji dismissed the annoying spirit and turned his focus onto the rookie. “We’ll figure it out as we go along then.” he stated as he led the woman into the complex.

As they strode down the corridors Zenji would momentarily indicate to various offices they passed such as these are the offices of the Seated Officers or Down there is the office of the Captain-Commander and so on and so forth. Slowly their step he pointed to a large room filled with busy Shinigami and with, what seemed to be, a constant stream of on duty soldiers running in and out of it. “That’s the Central Command Room.” he informed her “The coordination of many of the Gotei operations are conducted from within that room.”

Gesturing for her to follow him he continued on, if they hung around too long they’d only get in the way considering the busy nature of the area.

Moving onwards he paused and pointed down a long, less busy, corridor. “My office is down there. You’ll find most of the administrative work is conducted within that wing. Archives, Form Processing and so on.”

Continuing the tour without entering that particular wing, there wasn’t much to see after all and he didn’t want to bore the kid. Eventually they left the main complex itself to cross a courtyard towards a few standalone buildings a little way down the path. Pulling the door open Zenji bowed deeply and stepped inside, staying close to the wall, gesturing for the woman to stay close to him.

In front of them was a dojo packed full of Soul Reapers. Currently there was no sparring going on but an Officer was leading a Zanjutsu training exercise for the many attending Soldiers. There were also at least as many again kneeling on the sidelines watching the ongoing lesson either voluntarily or because there simply wasn’t enough room for them all to practice at once.

Leaning over to Reika Zenji spoke softly so as not to disturb the class. “We have a few such Dojos here. You’ll usually find a few lessons being conducted at any given time by the various Officers who are skilled in Zanjutsu and Hakuda.”

All that glitters is not gold [Zenji/closed] Empty Re: All that glitters is not gold [Zenji/closed]

Post by Reika Suzumei Thu Jun 18, 2020 1:11 pm

The young Soul Reaper listened quietly as the tour of the Headquarters went on, the map in her mind slowly filling out with all the important places within. When Zenji was talking about the Seireitei, she didn’t realize it also applied to the sprawling compound that they were in. Get a hold of yourself. You’re new, it’s okay to feel a bit overwhelmed. Reika took a quick breath and followed Renji’s lead.

The sheer amount of busy shinigami was surprising. Despite the general word-of-mouth, these folks seemed to be constantly being busy and jovial. How can paperwork be fun? Maybe there was more to this division than the eye could see.

Mulling her thoughts over, the pair passed through the courtyard and into the dojo. When Zenji bowed, Reika turned her head slightly, looking at him and then to the instructor. Oh! Quickly she bowed with him. This dojo was packed with so many people - it seemed like the Soul Reapers were sardines in a can. Not even the academy seemed this packed for a training lesson.

Pulled from thought, Reika listened to Zenji and nodded an affirmation. “It’s crazy how packed they are in here.” She said leaning toward him, speaking softly. “I don’t remember classes being this packed.” It was impressive, to say the least. Word of mouth from the Seireitei didn’t do these shinigami justice. Looking around the dojo, Reika nodded and gestured with her right hand for Zenji to follow her outside.

Walking outside, Reika moved a few paces away from the entrance of the dojo so as not to disturb the group within. “Sorry. I just wanted to say that what I had been told from my peers in the academy and on the streets of the districts isn’t true. I was told that the First Division was full of mindless, do-nothing pencil pushers. Just that little bit of a going through the halls and this dojo showed me otherwise… It’s really surprising.”

It felt like a child confessing wrongdoing to a parent. Reika’s kneaded hands together out of bad habit before dropping them to her sides. “I want to know what you do here.” The woman gestured to his outfit. Zenji looked like a monk more than a Soul Reaper in her mind. “What daily life is like around here. Do you get to actually hunt hollow?” And more importantly to the young Soul Reaper, “Do you know someone that can help me with kido!?”

All these little things were important to Reika. Divisions didn’t matter as long as she could get better at the skills she wanted to master.

All that glitters is not gold [Zenji/closed] Empty Re: All that glitters is not gold [Zenji/closed]

Post by Zenji Hatayama Fri Jun 19, 2020 2:23 pm

Zenji seeing the instructor look their way coughed and focused on Reikia pretending he hadn't seen the man’s annoyed look. “Uhm we should leave.” he told the girl. Truth be told if the instructor saw Zenji watching then he’d try and drag him over for a session and, preferably, he’d rather Reika’s first impression of him not to be a loser flailing around like a madman with his staff.

Bowing towards the dojo Zenji left the building with the student in tow. Once they were outside he smiled at her statement. “Well the rumours aren’t completely wrong, there are some such useless bureaucrats within the Division… I myself am, more or less, one of them.” he told her with a self-deprecating sense of humour. It hurt a little to say it but considering what had happened during his last excursion to the World of the Living, along with all the political intrigue here at home, had instilled in the man a need to grow both physically and mentally. Constantly reminding himself of his weakness was a good way to stay motivated.

“However you will find just as many great tactical officers, swordmasters, martial artists, Demon Arts Experts and so on.” he assured Reika with a warm smile.

As they were walking along he sighed. “I’ll show you my office but prepare to be disappointed.” he told her with a tone of resignation in his voice. “As for Kido, well I can probably help a little, after all I do happen to be the Head of Clan Hatayama.”

When they finally entered the administrative block Zenji began to lead the way towards his office. “We can choose to still be on active combat duty while we fight or we can focus on our administrative roles.” he told the girl. “Until recently I have largely focused on the latter although I am transitioning into a more active combat position at the moment.” he told her. Leaving off the fact that the last two times he’d been sent to the World of the Living, over the course of 8 years, had both almost ended with his death. Best not to scare the new recruit.

Eventually they reached an office and Zenji nodded. “Here we are Divisional Reports Archives.” he told her while pushing the door open and stepping aside to let her enter. The office, not too large but big enough for a non-seated Shinigami, had a desk, a few seats and a great many shelves filled with scrolls as well as more modern looking filing cabinets.

“Please take a seat, I’ll make us some tea.”

Putting his staff beside his own desk seat the Soul Reaper hurried to the corner where he had a small setup for brewing tea and quickly set about it. As he busied himself he spoke to the woman without turning around. “So tell me about yourself Reika? How did you do at the various Academy classes?.”

All that glitters is not gold [Zenji/closed] Empty Re: All that glitters is not gold [Zenji/closed]

Post by Reika Suzumei Sat Jun 20, 2020 12:45 am

Ah, there was nothing like not realizing that you had caused ire to rise in an unwilling participant. Yet there was Reika in a moment of questioning, completely oblivious to the fact that she had spoken too loud, disturbing the instructor. That look on the instructor’s face was enough to make Reika cringe. “R-right.” Quickly bowing to the man, the young shinigami darted after Zenji before she could possibly get in trouble.

As they walked away from that small social disaster, Reika got to listen to Zenji spiel about both sides of the coin that was the First Division. It seemed the public opinion of the group had been muddled over the years by the glories of the other 5 Gotei. This fact seemed really sad until Zenji revealed he was a bureaucratic cog in the machine. But he didn’t seem to have airs like you’d expect most of the bureaucrats to have.

Pushing it all aside, Reika followed suit with the man until they arrived at his office. Once inside, she removed her zanpakuto from her belt, leaning it against the wall near the chair that she found herself settling into. Watching Zenji as he prepared tea, she answered. “Me? Oh… I suppose I excelled at combat - nothing spectacular like some people.”

Reika tapped her right index finger on her chin lightly in thought, glancing around the office as she did so. “I met basic requirements for most things… minus kido.” Laughter left her as she wrapped her arms around her stomach. “I’m pretty horrible at kido. I ended up setting the poor instructor’s uniform on fire. The look on her face was priceless - the ear full I got afterward was not.”

It might have been a lack of skill or as the instructor said, ‘a lack of focus and concentration’. Try as she might, Reika had barely managed to get passing marks for the ability. Even with that, the frustration over not being able to do such a basic ability was irksome.

“Which is why I’m rather eager to find some division or someone to help me out.” She leaned to the left to get a better vantage of Zenji at work with the tea. “So, off subject: what’s the Hatayama clan?”

All that glitters is not gold [Zenji/closed] Empty Re: All that glitters is not gold [Zenji/closed]

Post by Zenji Hatayama Sat Jun 20, 2020 9:58 am

The First Division Administrator chuckled. “The thing to remember is that all Divisions have Clerical staff. After all, how do you think reports get submitted, reviewed and analysed to better plan future assignments? It’s also how we track the Hollow activity in various parts of the Realm of the Living. It’s also how the Division coordinate not only their own personnel but also work between Squads, I mean imagine trying to manage thousands of Soul Reapers without that sort of network in place.” he stated. People tended to mock and look down on the clerical work done by the First but, without it, the Gotei wouldn’t function or even exist. Thousands of decisions, analysis and approvals were happening in the background at all times within the Gotei to keep the Shinigami functioning properly, and as efficiently, as possible.

All the while he spoke Zenji’s hands had never stopped moving. The Way of Tea was a precise and measured art which demanded your attention, it could be tiring and frustrating but the end result was always satisfying.

Listening to the girl talk about her time at the Academy made the nobleman smile. It seemed they all had their struggles in the end.  “I think most of us have the same experience at the Academy in one way or another.” he admitted. “I barely passed the majority of my classes and had to be basically carried by my Kido ability. I’m pretty sure I hit an onlooker during my first Zanjutsu session.”

Finished he carried over a tray with two tea bowls filled with a hot, rich green coloured, sweet smelling beverage. Taking a seat at the opposite side of his desk he placed the tray down carefully. Lifting his guests small drinking bowl and placing it in front of her, he then lifted his own, cupping it in his hands enjoying the warmth.

“The Hatayama Clan?” he asked in a tone of surprise, it was rare he ran into citizens of the Seireitei that were unaware of his Family’s existence or their reputation. “Well my Family for one.”

He smiled pleasantly and sipped at his drink. Ah delicious. “We’re an old family, one of the founding groups of the Soul Society but back then there was no Clan. They where a group of Monks back then.”  he explained slowly, might as well do it properly if he was going to answer the family. “Around the time of the founding they were elevated to nobility.”

Leaning back into his desk chair the Soul Reaper closed his eyes allowing himself to relax. He was a little tired from his earlier training session. “Nowadays we’re considered a minor Clan amongst the aristocracy. We’re better known for being similar to the Monks that started the Family. We operate an Estate that is open to the public for them to visit the Gardens and the Shrine.” he continued before opening his eyes and grinned “In Gotei circles we’re better known for being mystics. Our Clan has a library which holds records as old as any found in the Gotei itself. A large portion of those texts are related to the Demon Arts and other, rarer, arcane arts. Which is why so many of our Clan, even the non-Shinigami, are trained in the working of spells.”

All that glitters is not gold [Zenji/closed] Empty Re: All that glitters is not gold [Zenji/closed]

Post by Reika Suzumei Sat Jun 20, 2020 8:31 pm

The sweet smell of the tea Zenji was producing filled the room as Reika listened to the man as he diligently worked. The aroma seemed to cling to her nostrils as a sudden pang of want overcame her senses. Thankfully it wasn’t long before the sweet nectar was brought over on a tray. Taking the remaining bowl, Reika dipped her head in thanks to her host.

Sipping from the bowl, a small smile did appear. Such a delicious flavor - it reminded Reika of being back at home with her family. Family? That’s what Zenji said as he spoke of the Hatayama Clan. It was rather amazing to think that this simple man was nobility, yet here he remained locked away in an office. Like those old tales of princesses being locked away to rot until someone saves them. Instead, you had some nobleman stowed away. But this time it seemed the guards were a mountain of paperwork.

The thought of being a noble didn’t seem appealing to the young shinigami. After all, all the things that seemed to trickle out into the districts seemed to show they did nothing but bicker amongst themselves. Yet before her was a minor nobleman who seemed normal compared to the tales. Then again, maybe his passive nature ran in the family and that’s why they fell to a minor house despite being apart of the found group

Enjoying the peaceful chat, Reika continued to enjoy her tea until Zenji said something that caused her to choke on the tea. As she coughed into a closed fist, she set the bowl down in the chair next to her. Leaning forward in her chair with an almost childlike glee, she smiled.

“If I get this right… you’re saying your clan’s known for its Demon Arts. Is it possible that I can get help with training? Please say it’s so!”

This wasn’t the time to jump the gun, but if it was true, she couldn’t help but jump on it. “I’ve got to get help. I really, really need it. I’ll even try not to set someone on fire.” That was something that Reika really couldn’t guarantee though. “It’s the one skill I’m severely lacking in right now. Please, oh please say you can help.”

All that glitters is not gold [Zenji/closed] Empty Re: All that glitters is not gold [Zenji/closed]

Post by Zenji Hatayama Sun Jun 21, 2020 11:56 am

Zenji gave his guest a humble and soft smile. “We are only one such Clan, there are greater Families than ours famed for such things such as the Akimoto, but yes that is correct.”

Her request shocked Zenji. He was used to commoners being much more… hesitant in their requests when and if this had been a short time ago the nobleman likely would have said no. However he had changed somewhat in the past few weeks and, after all, he had some teaching experience under his belt now thanks to Yuki. Resting his cup on the table the noble thoughtfully rubbed his chin.

There was no reason not to help and, as far as he could remember, and considering his own light duties within this very office he only really had his own training and what other duties he volunteered for.

“Well I suppose, for a colleague, I can certainly try my best.” he told her eventually with a smile while lifting his bowl again and sipping at his tea. “We’ll schedule something at my Estate, there is plenty of outdoor space for training there and if needed we have texts to draw upon if some more academic study is required.” The Libraries of the Clan were traditionally for limited use by outsiders only but lately Zenji had been granting access to colleagues he felt it would benefit. Although he still required the visitors to be monitored by either the Branch Family’s Monks or Shrine Maidens.

Sipping the hot beverage he chuckled softly. “Don’t worry too much, simply train and you’ll progress. I myself am pretty poor at all of the techniques of the Zankensoki except Kidō.”

He considered for a moment before adding. “If you have the time we can go to the Divisional training area and have a quick demonstration just to get an idea of the level. That way I can prepare a lesson much easier for when you’re free in the future.”

All that glitters is not gold [Zenji/closed] Empty Re: All that glitters is not gold [Zenji/closed]

Post by Reika Suzumei Sun Jun 21, 2020 3:36 pm

Reika’s eyes seemed to glimmer with glee as a smile of excitement quickly appeared. There seemed to be a sudden surge of energy that came over her as she wiggled with excitement in her seat. It seemed like a long shot, but she had found someone that could help her get a better grasp on a skill that she was having nothing but trouble with. Even Reika’s spiritual energy fluttered for a moment at the thought of getting training.

“I tell you what… you help me and I’ll help you! We can train each other and hopefully we’ll both learn something from the experience.” Certainly worth a shot, even if she had never attempted to help someone with training unless sparring counted.

Lost in the moment, Reika nearly forgot about the tea beside her. Grabbing the cup she sipped lightly, eyeing the nobleman as she drifted into a momentary haze of doing a demonstration outside. All that was on her schedule for today was going to the other Divisions and checking them out. That could wait if it meant getting one step closer to being under someone’s tutelage.

“All I’m doing today is checking out the other five Gotei - I can certainly spare some time to do a demonstration. Just don’t laugh at me.” Her last sentence came out meekly.

The young shinigami glowered at the tea bowl in her hand, reliving the memories of the academy and the unruly taunts of her fellow students. She was going to prove them all wrong and show them all what she’s truly capable of. “I’m ready whenever you are. Until then, I’m content to enjoy this lovely tea you’ve prepared. Reminds me of home.”

All that glitters is not gold [Zenji/closed] Empty Re: All that glitters is not gold [Zenji/closed]

Post by Zenji Hatayama Sun Jun 21, 2020 4:24 pm

Zenji smiled pleasantly at her enthusiasm, finding it quite heartwarming and he wondered if he would feel that way again about being a Soul Reaper? He loved Kido but that fascination felt detached from his role in the Gotei. Perhaps that was the problem? A flicker of energy wisped through the room like a cool breeze. It would seem she was more emotionally invested in this self-improvement that he had suspected.

“She could be useful.” whispered the Spirit causing Zenji to frown in confusion, he had no idea what she meant but he didn’t like the sound of it. If she sensed these concerns she chose not to clarify them.

Banishing the odd comment he chuckled. “It’s always good to enjoy a warm cup of pleasant tea before exerting yourself.” he commented cheerfully. Shaking his head the man added. “Don’t worry Reika, no one is going to laugh. I’m in no place to be judging the key skills of any Soul Reaper. Besides you’re a fresh graduate, people expect a bit of a transitionary period while your academy taught skills take on a sort of flavour that better fits your new duties.” he added reassuringly.

Pausing he frowned. “Do you have a deadline for the submission of your application for Divisional assignment?” he asked.

Once their tea was finished Zenji stood slowly and brushed out the wrinkles in his Shihakusho. Walking over to pick up his Zanpakuto the man smiled at the graduate. “Well let us be off, if we leave it too late then the training grounds will become rather busy.”

Walking over to the door he opened it and stepped to one side to allow Reika go first, he would then step after her and shut, as well as lock, his office behind him. The nobleman would begin leading the way to the outdoor training ability, choosing one of the smaller, less used, walled sections of the courtyard where they could have some privacy for the Kido session.

All that glitters is not gold [Zenji/closed] Empty Re: All that glitters is not gold [Zenji/closed]

Post by Reika Suzumei Sun Jun 21, 2020 5:14 pm

Reika relaxed into her seat as Zenji put her nerves at ease as he spoke about no one judging her for her skills, or the lack of in her case. It was pleasant to be among such favorable company. Hopefully, with both of them working together, they can actually accomplish their goals. Already she could imagine spending time on the training grounds or in the library, pouring through the vast collection in hopes of gaining knowledge. It was all so exciting.

Zenji’s question snapped her out of the little daydream she was having. “Hmm? Deadline?” There actually wasn’t an answer to that. “I’m… not entirely sure. I’d have to look at the file that I was given at graduation. That’s not exactly on me. I guess I got a little too excited about looking around to even consider looking at it.

The mood had simmered down and the two had finished their tea and were quickly along their way to the training grounds. It seemed like a quaint little place, secluded away from prying eyes. It seemed perfect for the duo to get to work.

The young shinigami rushed ahead of Zenji and gave a small twirl, her arms outstretched as she smiled. “This place is perfect!” She cheered. “No prying eyes and we can do this hopefully without any interruptions.” Standing up straight, she placed her hands on her hips and beamed. “Now, how should I start? And please tell me I don't have to start with anything fire-based.”

All that glitters is not gold [Zenji/closed] Empty Re: All that glitters is not gold [Zenji/closed]

Post by Zenji Hatayama Mon Jun 22, 2020 4:28 pm

When they reached the courtyard the pair found a quiet walled off area with a handful of targets at one side, just perfect for the practice of Demon Arts. The young woman had ran off ahead and was shouting with joy about having found a suitable location. The Soul Reaper shook his head with a faint smile. He found the whole thing very endearing.

Zenji smiled at her mention of fire based magic leading him to chuckle. “Well we don’t have to, let’s think.” he said tapping a finger against his Staff before continuing. “What about a low level Bakudō and Hadō? Whichever ones you know. With incantations for now.”

Zenji leant his staff against the wall then walked up to the firing line. “I suppose it’s unfair for me to make promises without showing you what I’m capable of. Afterall I don’t want you to think of me as a mere windbag.” he added with a faint smirk.

Some didn’t think too highly of the nobility, despite the fact they were born with greater talent than the average soul and her opinion of the First had clearly been rather low prior to today. So best make it clear that he could be useful to her. It seemed the proper and polite thing to do.

“Yes… demonstrate our prowess.” whispered the Spirit.

Zenji frowned. That was another weird comment from the Spirit, what the Hell was going on with her?

“After all it’s fun when people think you’re awesome!” laughed the Spirit with unworried glee.

The Soul Reaper smirked. Well he supposed even a Zanpakuto whose form he couldn’t even see could be a little childish at times. Shaking his head the nobleman plucked two spells from his repertoire that should demonstrate what the girl was looking for. Bakudo first then or else there wouldn’t be a target left.

Picking the target on the furthest left Zenji began to chant. “Carriage of thunder, bridge of a spinning wheel. With light, divide this into six." he said calmly with one hand coming up slowly with a finger extended, pointed at the target, “Bakudō #61. Rikujōkōrō."

A spark of yellow light flickered at the tip of his finger. Six beams of light slammed into the wooden target. Of course it didn’t show much but it was obvious that if the target had been animated then it would be frozen.

The extended hand was now palm facing outwards with the fingers bent slightly. "Sprinkled on the bones of the beast. Sharp tower, red crystal, steel ring. Move and become the wind, stop and become the calm. The sound of warring spears fills the empty castle." It felt weird to be speaking so calmly, the incantation was usually shouted or yelled. Strange.

A yellow ball of energy gathered in the outstretched hand, the orb swirling with gathered power, then he let out a breath slowly. “Hadō #63. Raikōhō.”

Energy discharged from the orb like a powerful bolt of lightning ripping across the courtyard to slam into the wooden target. With a roaring explosion shards of woods were sent flying everywhere, the spell having been far more potent that Zenji had intended.

Moving quickly he stepped in front of Reika and threw up his hands. “Bakudō #39. Enkōsen!” yelled the nobleman. A spinning disk of dull yellow energy appeared in front of the man as shards of wood struck the defensive barrier and bounced off harmlessly.

Letting the spell drop Zenji turned to smile at Reika a bit sheepishly. “Sorry. I went a little overboard.”

Well two chanted spells from each wing of Kidō in the 60’s along with another level 39 Bakudō with no incantation. That’s bound to be enough of a demonstration. Zenji stepped back away from the firing line to let Reika take her turn.

All that glitters is not gold [Zenji/closed] Empty Re: All that glitters is not gold [Zenji/closed]

Post by Reika Suzumei Wed Jun 24, 2020 1:05 pm

As Zenji suggested a low Bakudō and Hadō, the young shinigami began to think back to the training in the academy. So many of those techniques slipped through her grasp with each session that she did - so many failed executions. She’d have to concentrate hard as to not make a fool of herself. Something extremely low on the tier should do, right?

Tension started to rise through her body as Reika mentally prepared herself - but it was for not. Zenji decided to demonstrate his own capabilities first. A sigh of relief escaped her as she stepped back a few paces and watched with high anticipation.

And there it was, the power of a nobleman - someone born with a higher potential than a common-born soul. Zenji masterfully demonstrated his ability, calling out the incantation without missing a beat, or flubbing a word. It was truly amazing to see such skill and power in action - yet truly terrifying. The raw power alone was something Reika could only dream of, as shards of wood scattered through the air.

This kind and gentle facade hid a terrifying secret. Reika swallowed hard as she looked at the monk who smiled. How many more were like this in the divisions and would she be able to stand any chance in a simple sparring match?

A weak laugh left Reika as she rubbed the back of her neck. “That was overboard?” She turned away from Zenji, looking at the wooden targets as she walked a few paces away from her companion. “Remind me not to get on your bad side.” She murmured to herself.

Calmly raising her right hand, Reika picked a target before her as small sparks of electricity started to flicker from her hand. “Hadō # 4. Byakurai.”

Energy discharged from her hand in the form of a concentrated beam of electricity, slamming into the target. The wooden target swayed slightly from the blast, leaving behind only a small divot with but a wisp of smoke coming from it.

That wasn’t enough - there was one more to try. Taking a deep breath, Reika aimed for the same target. Her right hand began to draw symbols of her spell in the air, her entire body permeating red energy. “Bakudō #9. Geki.” The red energy left her body, surrounding the target in her aura as Reika turned to Zenji.

“It’s not much, but I can at least handle these without causing injury.” She smiled, slightly proud of herself. At least this time she didn’t inadvertently cast it on the wrong target. “What do you think? Am I trainable?”

All that glitters is not gold [Zenji/closed] Empty Re: All that glitters is not gold [Zenji/closed]

Post by Zenji Hatayama Wed Jun 24, 2020 1:32 pm

With hands folded behind his back he watched in silence as Reika performed her own Hadō and then Bakudō. The older soul was motionless allowing her to perform her Demon Arts without having him distract her.

First was the Byakurai. Low level but performed with no incantation, the relatively advanced Eishōhaki technique, and she performed it adequately. It lacked a real kick but it was easily enough to hurt, or at least distract, any enemy in the midst of combat. Then came her Geki, again low level but adequately performed and without an incantation. It was a visually unimpressive spell although, in Zenji’s opinion, a very useful one. He reached out with his Spiritual Senses towards the binding the spell and mystically prodded the binding. It wasn’t strong but it would hold a low-level Hollow long enough for dispatching.

Zenji rubbed at his chin thoughtfully. He had expected far worse all things considering how hard Reika had been on herself but she seemed more than capable. She may be a novice but far from a failure for a young soul only just out of the academy.

“You’re far too hard on yourself, that was not bad at all.” he assured her. “I have had to try and help far less capable Soul Reapers not too long ago.” he stated although he was far too polite to ever name something after referring to them in such a fashion.

He smiled. “If you’re truly interested I would be more than willing to help you refine your methods and teach you a few spells outside of the academy syllabus.” Pausing the nobleman glanced around. “Ah but not at the barracks I think. I’ve accidentally damaged this area more than I’d like to admit. I think if I do so again, even while teaching, I’ll have one of the Seated Officers come down to deal with me personally.”

“If you’d be willing then we can arrange our training to be conducted at my Estate. We have plenty of courtyard room for practical training as well as a plethora of texts should you wish to academically pursue the topic.”

He grinned at her. “We’ll have you casting Senju Kōten Taihō in no time.”

Pausing he tapped his lip. A good training tool for more advanced students was often a sparring match. Not only because it forced them to use their skills under pressure but also they got to see how a more experienced Demon Arts adept might wield their powers in battle. Zenji figured setting something like that up at the Estate would be child's play all things considered.

All that glitters is not gold [Zenji/closed] Empty Re: All that glitters is not gold [Zenji/closed]

Post by Reika Suzumei Fri Jun 26, 2020 12:34 am

Zenji’s words did ring true to Reika. By far, among all within the Gotei, she was her own greatest enemy. She was always self-critical and full of self-doubt that it ate away at her at times. But his words did give her encouragement. Maybe it was all a fluke - it didn’t matter. She had done well enough in the nobleman’s eyes to not be among the less capable that he had helped in the past.

Such a relief.

As he offered to train her, Reika couldn’t help but beam with a large smile on her face, hopping in place with excitement at the chance to become better, to become a stronger shinigami. AH! I can’t wait!

The thing that threw her off was Zenji saying that it’d be at his estate. While his destruction of the training grounds and the possibility of getting scolded by a seated officer humanized him, the thought of being at a noble estate seemed a bit daunting to her. She was but a mere commoner; to stand on the grounds of a noble house was beyond imagination, especially with the stories told out in the districts.

“I thank you for your kindness, but I’d sooner be a seated officer than be able to cast such a high-level technique.” She chuckled softly, “I’d be happy to join you in training wherever we’re able to. Being at your estate seems far above my standing though.”

She had to admit that. It did make her feel a bit uneasy at the thought. “You’re not like the stories they tell out in the districts about the nobles. You’re actually very kindhearted - at least I think you are.”

All that glitters is not gold [Zenji/closed] Empty Re: All that glitters is not gold [Zenji/closed]

Post by Zenji Hatayama Fri Jun 26, 2020 7:37 am

“Well if that’s the case then I have a rather easy job ahead of me.” he said with a smile before leaning forward and speaking in an exaggerated whisper. “I’ve seen seated officers blow themselves up with a simple Shakkahō.”

He was being unusually jovial but it seemed to be helping, the girl had been so nervous and unsure but at least in this way he could grant her some comfort. Then, in the not too distant future, he hoped to help her fulfil the need to grow as a Demon Artist.

Waving her thanks away he shook his head. “It is simple courtesy for us to help one another is it not? Besides as your senior I would be remiss to not assist in your professional growth.”

Zenji smiled, it was a common mistake she had made after all, the word Estate seemed to conjure up imaginary horrors of high class society amongst the peasantry. “Ah fear not. As I said earlier the Hatayama Clan Estate is open to the public. You’ll see many a soul there whether on pilgrimage, attending to their daily prayers or simply enjoying the gardens. We will of course be training in a more private section of the grounds so as to not disturb the guests.”

Hearing her comment about the nobility Zenji tilted his head slightly with a look of vague bemusement before a more thoughtful expression took over. “Many of us really aren’t as bad as the citizens of the Rukongai believe.” he chuckled slightly “Mind you some are worse. We’re just people at the end of the day and we have the same flaws and virtues you can find anywhere. We simply have had things easier in some regards due to our status.” And many much harder but there was no reason to start bringing down the conversation with talks about the expectations put upon nobility, the deadly games played by their peers or any such concerns.

All that glitters is not gold [Zenji/closed] Empty Re: All that glitters is not gold [Zenji/closed]

Post by Reika Suzumei Sat Jun 27, 2020 11:44 pm

Reika couldn’t help but giggle at the thought of a seated officer blowing themselves up. It definitely made her feel better about being a little trigger shy with using Demon Arts. Zenji truly was a kind man for offering to help her out with a skill that she had trouble with. Though the world of a shinigami was a bit scary and daunting, if people like Zenji existed in it, it had to be fine. Right?

This little experience, her first experience, in fact, was really behind imagination for the young shinigami. She simply smiled at Zenji and bowed. The whole world that was offered to her was scary, but with this simple encounter with a stranger, she hoped to make the best of it. “Zenji, I really do greatly appreciate you for what you’re going to do for me.”

It was the beginning of a great chapter for the young shinigami. All she could hope to do is improve her skill - maybe foster a new friendship. There was so much great potential here.

I’m truly lucky this happened.

“Hopefully we can both learn from one another. It’s probably going to be me mostly learning. But I hope we can foster a good friendship from this.” She smiled softly, offering her right hand. “Just tell me when to meet… and hopefully, provide me directions so I don’t get lost.” A soft giggle left her as she beamed. This was the beginning of a new adventure for sure.

All that glitters is not gold [Zenji/closed] Empty Re: All that glitters is not gold [Zenji/closed]

Post by Zenji Hatayama Mon Jun 29, 2020 5:12 am

Waving away her thanks again the man smiled pleasantly. “Nonsense, as I said we should all help each other whenever we can.” he told her pleasantly. “We are a military after all so every little bit of practice helps.”

Glancing at the ruined targets Zenji considered something before nodding. “That should probably wrap things up for today, I need to tidy up the targets so that the next group that wishes to train has fresh ones ready.” That was the way of things after all, although some lazy souls liked to leave their ruined targets behind and just let the new folk replace them.

Refocusing on the fiery haired woman Zenji considered her words thoughtfully for a second. If she was arranging tours of all six Divisions she’d be busy in the short-term, then she would have to submit her application and possibly go through some interviews before being assigned her position within the Gotei 6. He wouldn’t want to interrupt any of that so setting a date right now may be premature. “Hmm. I think the best way to handle this would be for you to send me a message here. Once you have found your final role in the Gotei, and been assigned your position, just either visit my office or send a courier with which Division you’re with. I will send back a time and some directions to whichever Divisional Barracks is appropriate.” he told her with a pleased expression, everything was working out rather well. “And, of course, in the meantime if you come across any spells or techniques that are particularly interesting to you make a note. We can address them when the lesson occurs.”

Zenji bowed slightly. “It really has been a pleasure Miss Reika. I look forward to meeting you again.” he told her.

He wouldn’t leave the air completely, instead the Lord of the Hatayama would take down the damaged boards with practiced ease and place them on the “used” pile in the not too far off supplies shed before bringing out two new, unmarked, targets and placing them up again.

Once done the man would nod at his handiwork before setting off for his offices. He’d given himself enough time off today, it was time to get to organising some AARs.
