Backstreets Back Empty Backstreets Back

Post by La Fuerza of the Flock Sun Jun 14, 2020 8:19 pm

The Flock spread across the city like a tsunami. The shinigami, the quincy, nothing tasted so sweet as the sparkling scent of whatever soul alighted deeper within the maze of towering buildings. Even as the Flock moved towards the lingering taste, they knew they would be too late to feast on the delicacy. Chaos reigned across the city, the sharp eyes of crows above the rooftops spied billowing spires of smoke and soot. The torrents of intangible energy were being worked into a storm by other souls, obstinate and otherwise fought one another, forcing their way against the ebb and flow of it all.

Hunger drew many crows within the Flock to feast on every passing soul, and with each soul the Flock grew. Gluttony ate away at the edges of the Flock, their mind frayed as pieces left to chase blind hunger. Some would return with more birds, some would return with none, but there were many that didn’t return at all. Through their perception, the Flock saw other obstinate shinigami and tasted spices like the baseball quincy spirit. This oversaturated city was beginning to simmer. Even some of the singular human souls were shining with an alien radiance.

The mutiny within the Flock to the hungry void seemed inevitable. There was no pleasing the maw of madness that drove the beast within to feast and feast and feast. The Flock expected it was due to the overwhelming flavors of the sparkling soul that everything was being drawn towards. So, the Flock allowed the uncontrollable few to dive through the streets and out across the city. The rest of the Flock followed a path, as straight as they could towards the sparkling soul.

The hunger itself seemed not to abate as the errant crows feasted on the souls that were unfortunate enough to get in the Flock’s way. If anything, it grew deeper, wider, more complex. Something was building inside of the Flock and they intended to find out what. But more food was necessary, so when a scouting crow smelt a quincy burning like fire on their path, the Flock descended below the rooftops. Many crows still lingered across the city, but the Flock’s focus was wholly on the street where the quincy was already fighting back against a few birds that flew ahead...

//

The Flock landed along the rooftops and perched on the power lines, like a dark outline along the buildings and through the sky. They looked down on the quincy, every single pair of beady black eyes gazed without blinking. And then in a discordant wave, the eyes blinked and the birds cocked and moved their heads. The Flock watched and waited as the quincy deftly dispatched the three birds in front of them.

Backstreets Back Empty Re: Backstreets Back

Post by Rubedo Lux Regis Mon Jun 15, 2020 11:12 am

Some bitch ass had broken hollow bait in the middle of town. Rubedo had been enjoying a cup of green tea with Ignatius as they bantered about chasing around a spoiled Quincy named Mila they had been bodyguarding. The red-haired young man looked up at the sky as bestial duel roars resounded around a mall. It was the Hollow. Some warped into reality near the cafe’ screaming out in their cries as they tore into one another like animals to chase after the torrent of energy they desperately desired for their hungry stomachs. The once fine evening turned into a bloodbath and whoever was responsible was going to get a reckoning that no god could save them from.

There, in a flock of murder their namesake beheld, were crows covering the streets with their darkness. At first, he thought they were bats but these did not screech like one. Rubedo held out his hand and with a flash from his nontarnish ring band with blue topaz, a short sword formed in his hand - at first a crystalline form until it glowed a faint blue shape. He swiped at a few crows that made their frenzy round to gather around him in their chaotic flurry claw attacks.

“I will handle these, go see what the cause this is!” Rubedo shouted back to his friend and got lost within the swarm. Their soulless beady eyes sent a chill through the man’s back as he dispatched three more crows, even the way they all homed on him made it more unsettling. Who was controlling these flock? Or better yet were they just one entity?

The scream of souls was hard to ignore, he couldn’t save everyone and felt pretty helpless. He knew this was a work of bait but was unsure of the intention behind it. Whatever it was it was a foolish error.  Rubedo’s hand clenched tightly off the hilt as adrenaline coursed through him and gritted his teeth. “Tsk, I’m outnumbered,” he said aloud in his rather predicted state. He scoped out his surroundings before kicking at an iron-wrought chair into the air towards a group of birds dive-bombing at him and rolled behind a table in desperate attempt to hide.

The chair smashed into the group of birds diving at the quincy. Their broken bodies fell to the ground and burst into dust. Death and smoke filled the city air with a tinge of hate. The rest of the burning slab of civilization didn’t matter to the Flock anymore. A singular Crow with their beak agape squawked in their inhuman imitation of speech, “Hello there, little fella.

Others joined the chorus:

Little quincy.
Food.

Quincy?

Hello, quincy.

Quincy food.

Food.
Hello there, little quincy.

Quincy.

Little fella?

Hello, quincy!
Food.

Louder and louder the chorus of the Flock grew with excitement. Loose feathers from flapping wings fell to the street. The Flock felt their own hunger focus on the young soul in front of them. A meal larger than the singular human souls the errant birds were devouring on other streets across the city. It wouldn’t be the last thing they ate today. The complexity flowering within the Flock was immense, but there was also confidence within them, like a seawall holding back the ocean.

The quincy was nothing particular: a slab of prime beef seasoned in the chef’s unique way. Not as tantalizing as the baseball spirit. The Flock feared nothing would match those exquisite tastes. They looked at the quincy, as they had before with other singular souls. They saw the striking red hair; they saw the dirtied tuxedo; they saw them cowering under a table. Was there a sinister side to the Flock? Complexities were still emerging and only time would tell.

Heavy bodies lifted and fell, their great wings kicked the air below them as another squadron of crows dove at the table. As they dove, curving to sweep under the table, the chorus fell quiet. Only the sounds of the burning hunting ground remained.

The birds could speak and in unison. This day just got even creepier for the man. Rubedo never heard a Hollow speak like this, they seem to identify what he exactly was. He heard tales of many evolutions but the ones he normally was put in training seemed to be bestial and cared only for souls to consume upon than play with their food. Their chorus made the Quincy cover his eyes as if this was just a bad dream and they would just fly away uninterested in him. This wasn’t a dream and the flock’s curiosity grew every minute.

Ruby’s sense of protection swept away to reveal him haunched down. The Quincy grunted, quickly rolling away as the flock swept at such a coordinate display and dirtying up his nice clothing. He hopped back onto his feet then patted himself down with one hand while still clenching his short sword in the other.

“How rude,” Rubedo said as if the birds would care about appearance. “You ruined my clothes.” the redhead then made a mad dash down the street hoping to garner the attention of the flock away from the cafe. While running on by, Rubedo spun around and swung his sword arm up and let go of his weapon letting it fly towards the flock in an action to get their attention. The blade soon faded away whether or not it hit its target. Rubedo stood at the edge of the corner street awaiting the birds to dive at him once more.

“I wish I had a cigarette for this,” he off commented and dug his hand inside his pocket pulling out a metallic cig lighter and fidgeted with the lid with his thumb. "Welp lets get this over with." he shrugged his jacket off then got into a defensive stance.

As the Flock lifted their heavy bodies off the rooftops and power lines, the short claw flew from the quincy’s hand in a wide arc. It spun wide through the flock as they descended to follow the fleeing food. Not a concentrated ball of energy like the last, but a wild spiritual blade that cut through bird after bird leaving a gaping hole in the Flock’s ranks. They closed the ranks as best they could and the Flock was that much a smaller, but no less a menacing, shadow.

The sun was darkened due to the smoke and soot in the air, but the Flock blotted out any traces as they lifted through the streets above the quincy. The singular soul looked defiant but defenseless below the cawing mass of birds. Without a second thought, the Flock engulfed the street, hunger and the taste of complexity driving it to overwhelm their enemy before they could throw their short claw again.

The redhead made a defiant stand until the Flock began to descend upon him. The world seemed to darken from all the soot, smoke, and birds blotted out the sun. The Quincy turned tail once again as he made a dash for it around the corner hoping to delay the birds. He saw a cigarette vendor down the block - a worthy goal.

“Shit I need to stall these damn birds,” he said aloud to himself. The flock dive-bombed at his back, some of them managing to get their claws or beaks into his nice white shirt, he just wasn’t fast enough without the fable fast-stepping technique. Pride got the better of him to phone back Iggy as the culprit of this silly chaos needed to be dealt with first.

Rubedo maneuvered by a knocked over a trash can and kicked it towards the flooding flock as he continued his run. He was already starting to sweat and pant heavily from running from these birds just to get a cigarette. He was getting so close to his goal until the birds began to swarm him, he would have to think up another plan to keep the birds distracted. He wondered if the flock would be interested in his old metallic lighter like most crows to shiny things. He tossed it up in the air with a flick of his wrist and continued to barrage his way through the flock for some damn cigs. A little pain was nothing if he couldn’t get a pack and he was determined for that sweet sweet Nicotine.

Post by La Fuerza of the Flock Wed Jun 17, 2020 7:56 pm

Every snip and peck and swipe that the Flock managed to land on the flighty quincy was another taste to tantalize the endless maw of hunger that growled within the amalgamation of birds. The food was fast; their physical form withstood inhuman speeds as they danced through the storm of crows. Caws echoed out like a warcry as they moved with the quincy despite their speed and the trash can that smashed into an unlucky group of birds. The Flock was faster and continued the assault.

It did them no good, though. The tiny beaks and short claws weren’t enough to do anything but scratch the quincy and rip at their white outer skin. The quincy’s flesh bled and their outer skin ripped and peeled. For the Flock, it was only drops at a time in the empty well. To feast and taste the quincy, they had to finish the prey off. The bits they scratched away were a joke to the beast within.

The consciousness shifted focus, a step away as hunger overwhelmed them. They started to question the efficacy of blind assault. In that moment, the quincy tossed a shining bauble that caught the light as it spun. A few crows were near the spinning disc; synapses fired at the speed of light. The Flock realized a new tactic was called for here, and in an instant each bird ripped through the air in unison with conscious forethought.

The Flock tore through space with a thrum that broke the windows along the street. Shards of glistening glass crashed down from the sky and the Flock moved away from the alien device. The strange rapid beat of the drum sounded like machine gun fire with a static haze. They beat their wings, the caws quieted, and they watched for what the quincy would do next.

The Flock was relentless in the pursuit of its prey. Rubedo wasn’t sure to be impressed at such intelligence or be horrified once again that an army of crows was outmatching him, he thought the birds liked bread. What was he kidding, these were hollow, that was such a silly notion.

“Shit, shit,” Rubedo repeated. Every peck and nip caused him to string up a swear word. Their claws running his beautiful clothing he spent thousands on now left tattered as shredded pieces trailed behind him leaving most of his back exposed.

Would he die here alone? There was chaos everywhere and innocents being gobbled up like a buffet frenzy. One by one the souls fell in the background as their screams filled the air making it hard for the Quincy to concentrate along with the screeching of CAW. His brow knitted in forming frustration and sweat dripped freely while running down the street as fast as his human legs could carry him to his goal.

As the birds ripped through the air, the shattering sounds of glass made the Quincy grit his teeth and come to a halt just before the vendor. The redhead growled as there was no time to put money in the slot while the flock was on his ass. But there was a pause from the murder of crows as if they were seeing what the Quincy was going to pull next. This minute allowed the Quincy man to purchase a pack of Marlboro goodness. Sure he could have made a quicker action in breaking the vendor but he was above vandalizing precious goods: that being nicotine.

Rubedo tore off the plastic and package as quickly as he could and smacked out a single cigarette. There was one thing missing though: his lighter. “Dammit.” he cursed out loud. The birds had destroyed his source of igniting his cig, for now. He popped it in his mouth then definitely eyed up at the birds spreading out his arms.

“Well? Come at me!” He challenged the Flock. It was a gamble move, probably idiotic, too, though he wondered if the flock would take to such action of a sitting duck on a platter waiting to be feasted upon. His blue topaz ring gave off a soft cerulean aura as reishi gathered like particles towards it and hung in the air until the birds made their move. Hopefully, he could delay the erratic energy long enough to get a close-in stab of the flock even if it cost him a few more deadly wounds or maybe his sacrifice for the greater people's souls.

If invited, then why not go in? The hesitant Flock dove in full force on top of the quincy. As if they never stopped, the air thrummed again and the birds were dashing around their hardy meal. Despite their inability to consume this particular soul, their ability to overwhelm the singular figure was noticeable. But chunks and pieces weren’t enough to do much of anything to them, so this time, the Flock hatched a different plan.

As the birds overwhelmed the quincy once again, they started to hold themselves to the singular soul instead of flying past them. Claws dug into flesh as more black birds weighed on the quincy in an attempt to stop the soul from moving. Each pass a bird would attempt to grab onto some flesh or clothing. The birds that succeeded flapped and cawed. The Flock spoke in waves above the cawing war cries:

"Look here, chief."
"Food."

"I just want food."

"Come on, you motherfucker!"

"I am a god of death."
"A god of food."

"Fuck!"
"I just want food."

"You’ve got some funky stuff coming off of you."
"Funky stuff!"

"I just want food."

Backstreets Back Empty Re: Backstreets Back

Post by Ignatius Solomon Mon Jun 22, 2020 10:15 pm

Ignatius was pissed. It had been a nice day leading into a fairly nice evening when suddenly some jackass had decided to just open up some good ol’ hollow bait in Karakura. Immediately he and Rubedo had gone into business mode, splitting up for different reasons. Rubedo had gone on ahead to try and fight against the creatures, protect those that he could and/or who needed it. Ignatius, meanwhile, had instead broken off for reconnaissance, trying to find out who’d used the damn thing as well as how many hollows had been drawn in. As he sliced through another one of the masked monstrosities he had already come up with an answer to the second question: too damn many.

As far as Ignatius was concerned, they should’ve stayed out of it. After all, what if a group of Shinigami came and saw them slicing and dicing hollows? What if Mila was spooked by the fact that there were so many hollows and decided to skip town, fly to Osaka or, god forbid, Kyoto? There were too many unknowns and what-ifs in the scenario and Ignatius didn’t like it. Made it difficult to properly assess situations and utilize available intel; worse still coordinating with allies was even more difficult. And even on his best days, Rubedo was difficult to coordinate with properly.

He’d made the rounds of several streets that the two of them frequented, and he’d seen no sight of the man, yet it was as he was making yet another round that he felt his friend’s energy. But what he felt next frightened him, a hollow in combat, right on top of Rubedo!! He immediately felt a rage build in his system, and rushed to the scene. He wasn’t expecting what he saw, however. The presence he was feeling was a large number of crow hollows that seemed to be one united front. That was…an interesting one, and he made a quick sketch of it in a small notebook. Quickly using Hirenkyaku, he got up to a rooftop and, once more, formed his weapon. With a grimace, he leapt into the air and went flying down, top spike of the weapon going down first and impaling a crow and then going into a spinning frenzy as he landed, a few more birds being caught by the axe head.

“Rubedo, do I always have to save your ass?! You’d think that, being her highness’s bodyguard, that you’d know not to be reckless!”

Post by Rubedo Lux Regis Thu Jun 25, 2020 3:16 pm

The looming shadow of the Flock made the Quincy tense. Each peck and claw digging in his skin caused him to yell and scream in pain the bits of spiritual energy he had gathered solidified into a blade once more. He gripped the hilt tightly even as the pecks stung while the flock nipped at him. He swung in an arc to get the birds to back off but he was soon dived by the swarm once again.

This wasn’t his greatest plan.

Rubedo swiped through the air in a frantic flurry, each time he thought he had the upper hand only to see that became fruitless. The birds were working as one entity and he couldn’t pinpoint where the core of the Flock if it even had a leader, laid nestled away.

“Uggrragh get off you bastards!” he yelled out to the chorus of birds as he flailed about. One of the birds smashed into his face disarming him of his cigarette as it fell onto the ground then rolled down into a street drain. “Shit!” He tried diving for it but it slipped away from his grasps now prone to the flocks pestering.

If only he could get behind some cover to give him a bit of time to recover and rethink his plan or regroup with Ignatius to deal with the Flock. He crawled a few paces and slowly but surely got up to his feet, yelping and grunting as the bastard birds clawed at his back. He stumbled over but quickly caught himself from falling while hunched over. Suddenly, just before he thought of making a run for it, he heard the screech of crows and a whirlwind declined down upon them. He shielded his eyes a moment then blinked as Ignatius dropped looking quite upset at his friend. The redhead felt shame overwhelm him at those words though he would just have to suck it up and get better at fighting.

"Thank goodness you're here," he said. The poor man had scratches all over him, if he didn't get out of here soon he would become bird feed to the Flock moreover he was quickly feeling the exhaustion wash over him and he didn't have much fighting spirit left in him.

The bubbling consciousness was still new to their unbound focus. They were used to a singular set of wings and claws, one beak to speak from, and one pair of eyes to see. The crows that saturated much of the city were a part of the Flock, but those places in their mind were blinded by the mindless hunger. It was overwhelming to the nubile mind. The radical crows weren’t focused on the world around them, only on satiating the deep animal drives inside. So they didn’t taste the quick quincy who dashed through the streets and onto the rooftop.

It was only when the other morsel dove into the heart of the raging storm of feathers, skewering a number of crows, that the Flock noticed them. They slammed into the ground next to the other quincy, who had been forced onto the ground. The Flock was sure they were close to finally consuming the tenacious meal, but the additional food swung their stick and clawed through a number of crows. The Flock was forced to regroup. They moved away from the beaten down piece of succulent quincy, the crows kicking back against the air to dodge more swings from the stick.

They came here to eat a bigger meal than the paltry scraps singular human souls made, but, with the addition of another quincy, the Flock wasn’t sure it was worth it. The hunger inside only grew more irate as they fed it piece by tiny piece. There was a confidence that surged through the peanut brains of the Flock. The first quincy held itself together by strings. A little longer, and they would have their meal. They would need to distract the other, so they dove one final time. The Flock split into two, birds flying as close and tight as they could. They curved outward, pushing against both quincy, trying to force them apart and get at the meal they so desperately wanted.

He’d surveyed the situation long beforehand, had seen that Rubedo had been getting beaten down by the murder of crows. Yet, they seemed to be unfocused, a bit shaky in this form. It was a bit of a double edged sword, as that gave him just a bit more time to think and prepare. They’d pulled back, retreating for an instant, but were soon ready to go back on the attack and, as Ignatius had expected, they were going to try to drive a wedge between himself and Rubedo, most likely to try and secure the kill. He had seconds to react, and so he did the first thing that he could think of, pulled out a ginto tube and tossed it in front of Rubedo.

“A silver rod strikes the five-fingered stone bed! Gritz!!” His hands took on a blue glow for a few seconds and knowing that Rubedo wasn’t in a shape to be trying to escape, the man would be enveloped in a large box emblazoned with the quincy cross on it. This way, at the very least, he would be safe for a little bit and Ignatius could focus on this damn hollow. “Just take a bit of a rest, Rubedo! You’ve been dealing with this far too much!” He turned and spun his halberd, batting aside a few birds, swiping at them as they came crashing into him.

“Yes, I’d noticed that speed is most definitely your strong suit, unfortunately, you all are only about as strong as we are.” He parried several birds, earning himself several cuts here and there. Unfortunately for this swarming creature, Ignatius was not nearly as tired and injured as Rubedo had been, and so as the fight began anew, the biggest thing that Ignatius had to worry about was the speed of the creatures. He only had a few ginto left, but he had one big trick up his sleeve and, if he had to, he would most certainly reveal his trump cards. Thankfully he at least had his seele schneider. He remembered his father telling him not to worry about it.

Rubedo prepared himself, placing his arms in an X fashion, and expected to be pushed back against the flock though that was not the case. He peered up to see a bright flash then metal form around his person. A rather clever move by none other than his friend. For a moment he thought he was a goner there, slowly feeling his lifeforce ebbing away and out of fighting shape. Iggy was surely going to reprimand him at his lack of focus and slacking off in training.

The Quincy slid back against the coffin wall and took a load off as there was nothing he could do for now other than bleed. He was too sweaty and tired to make a quip respond and his vision was starting to blur over. Perhaps now would be a good time to recoup Eyes slowly closing as the battle raged on outside his comfort box, hopefully the flock was too weak to smash open the grizt.

“Damn I wish I had a cig.” he thought to himself, because he sure could use one despite Ignatius’ disapproval of his smoking habits.

Immediate denial was a bitter spice to the Flock’s meal. The half that dashed to overwhelm their first quincy morsel were blocked by a shining blue barrier made of the same tastes as the other annoyance. The quincy with the long, sharp claw seemed to have more tricks up their sleeve. Perhaps protection from predators such as the Flock. More to learn for the growing consciousness. The Flock stretched themselves, split between the unbreakable box and the obstinate quincy.

Birds overwhelmed the box. They turned it from a glowing blue to a jet black as they piled onto it to try and break through. Beak and claw tapped and scratched against the solid energy walls. Cracks started to form, but not at the pace that the Flock wanted. Frustration and hunger drove many of the birds to give up. Their heavy bodies rose into the air with frantic kicks and they joined their other half that was harassing the other quincy.

The Flock didn’t know how much longer they could continue the barrage against this food. Both of them proved more durable than any singular human soul. Were they meant to eat them? Was the Flock biting off more than they could chew? The hunger clawing at their insides told them otherwise. It said that these, that all were theirs to consume. There was nothing that should hold them back from satiating the void with these quincy souls.

So the Flock focused, leaving only a few to peck and crack the barrier. The rest rose up and joined the storm that raged around the other quincy. They pushed themselves and drew the storm closer and closer to the singular quincy soul. The long claw was deft at dealing with the birds around them, but it couldn’t stop the whole Flock from descending upon them...could it?

Backstreets Back Empty Re: Backstreets Back

Post by Ignatius Solomon Thu Jul 09, 2020 10:10 pm

At first, Ignatius had been concerned by the sheer numbers of hollow that had encircled both himself and Rubedo, that maybe they would completely overwhelm the two on that alone. Also the use of the Gritz spell had been a calculated risk, after all it would keep Rubedo from moving as much as it would keep these Alfred Hitchcock rejects from getting inside. There wasn’t going to be a repeat performance of “The Birds”, no matter how much this murder wanted to commit actual murder. Still, their numbers were going to be a problem, especially if they continued to simply swarm around the two quincy like bees.

He smiled, though, as the majority of the crow hollows decided to abandon their assault on Rubedo and flapped into the air kicking away from the box. Much to his chagrin, as he’d planned, they would mostly focus on him instead. Ironically, though, Ignatius had long devised such a technique for if he were to ever surrounded by hollows or, worse, Shinigami. Despite his attempts at batting practice, Ignatius knew that if he didn’t do something, and soon, he could potentially become this crazy swarm’s meal, instead of his friend. Yet there were so many and he needed a few seconds.

None of the quincy’s movements were wild, each one as calculated as he could make them, his proficiency with his weapon sufficient, though still a bit lacking. He swung the spear wide, knocking back a few more birds, before reaching into his coat pocket and procuring three vials, his last three, and tossed them hard into the air, sending them sailing up and, perhaps, past the birds. As they flew up higher and higher, Ignatius’s hands glowed with cyan energy.

“Lords of heaven, rain down they wrath upon the Earth! Schwertregen!!” There was a loud popping sound, following the incantation, and blades of reishi would begin raining down from on high, crashing into the ground in front of Ignatius and clattering mostly harmlessly off of the Gritz binding he’d put Rubedo in. Though he knew that the legion of hollow wouldn’t be completely destroyed by it, he was largely hoping that this would at least cause enough damage to force the creature to back off, even retreat. If not, then it would do some damage to the horde and he would finish the job.

Everything fell apart before the Flock could make any sort of dent in the other quincy.

The singular soul swept with their long claw and created enough of a void in the raging storm of feathers to toss three shining objects up into the air. The Flock paid them no mind, as the last bauble had been a simple distraction. That proved to be an unwise decision as the quincy shouted against the loud cacophony of cawing. Their words drew the air towards them and thickened the space where they were fighting until a crack shattered the three vials and released the pure taste of the quincy into the air above them.

It began to rain sharp blue claws that tore through the air as they fell downward and through the Flock. A storm against a storm, the defiant quincy brought their spiritual weight to bear against the predator and it was only instinct that saved the Flock from total destruction. Many of the birds were impaled by the thick spiritual energy, but some core piece of the amalgamation shifted in the air and jumped away from the devastation. The rip and thrum of the air as the birds all dashed away from the foreign power shattered nearby windows and broke up the storm that was the Flock.

There was no effort left in the great hollow. A lucky few crows still flew around the quincy, but they were quickly being dispatched by their long claw. The measly snack they picked off of the two quincy seemed to annoy the hunger within the Flock more than satiate it. Perhaps quincy weren’t worth the effort, after all. A tasty meal, for sure, but their thick skin and tenacity soured the taste for the Flock. Only a few birds remained as the crows scattered into the sky above the street. Those lost to the hunger and desperate for more of the quincy remained, but they would be dispatched by the expert skill of the two succulent souls.

One day, the Flock would return to feast on these two. Or on any of the quincy that they so desired. For now, they turned their attention to the sky and to the dwindling taste of the sparkling soul that started them on this journey in the first place.
